  • Femtosecond-to-nanosecond dynamics of flavin mononucleotide monitored by stimulated Raman spectroscopy and simulations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9084 .- 1463-9076. ; 22:12, s. 6538-6552
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flavin mononucleotide (FMN) belongs to the large family of flavins, ubiquitous yellow-coloured biological chromophores that contain an isoalloxazine ring system. As a cofactor in flavoproteins, it is found in various enzymes and photosensory receptors, like those featuring the light-oxygen-voltage (LOV) domain. The photocycle of FMN is triggered by blue light and proceeds via a cascade of intermediate states. In this work, we have studied isolated FMN in an aqueous solution in order to elucidate the intrinsic electronic and vibrational changes of the chromophore upon excitation. The ultrafast transitions of excited FMN were monitored through the joint use of femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) and transient absorption spectroscopy encompassing a time window between 0 ps and 6 ns with 50 fs time resolution. Global analysis of the obtained transient visible absorption and transient Raman spectra in combination with extensive quantum chemistry calculations identified unambiguously the singlet and triplet FMN populations and addressed solvent dynamics effects. The good agreement between the experimental and theoretical spectra facilitated the assignment of electronic transitions and vibrations. Our results represent the first steps towards more complex experiments aimed at tracking structural changes of FMN embedded in light-inducible proteins upon photoexcitation.

  • The physical environment and multi-professional teamwork in three newly built stroke units
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Disability and Rehabilitation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1464-5165 .- 0963-8288. ; , s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To explore multi-professional teamwork in relation to the physical environment in three newly built or renovated stroke units. Materials and methods: An observational study was undertaken. The participants were all staff members of a multi-professional team working in the reviewed stroke units. The data were collected using behavioural mapping and semi-structured observations, and they were analysed by content analysis and descriptive statistics. Results: Out of all the observations in the behavioural mapping, very few were of two or more members from the team together with a patient. None of the included stroke units had a co-location for all the members of the multi-professional team. Three main categories emerged from the analysis of the interviews: (i) the hub of the unit; (ii) the division of places; and (iii) power imbalance. All the categories reflected the teamwork in relation to parts of the physical environment. Conclusion: The design of the physical environment is important for multi-professional teamwork. Emphasis must be placed on better understanding the impact of the physical environment and on incorporating the evidence related to multi-professional teamwork during the design of stroke units.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION Understanding the link between the physical environment and effective teamwork can lead to more tailored and supportive design solutions. The design of the physical environment should be considered as a vital part of effective teamwork in stroke units. The physical environment should include shared workstations, allowing team members to meet and communicate face to face.

  • Long-term monitoring of SO2 quiescent degassing from Nyiragongo’s lava lake
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of African Earth Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1956 .- 1464-343X .- 0899-5362. ; 134, s. 866-873
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The activity of open-vent volcanoes with an active lava-lake, such as Nyiragongo, is characterized by persistent degassing, thus continuous monitoring of the rate, volume and fate of their gas emissions is of great importance to understand their geophysical state and their potential impact. We report results of SO2 emission measurements from Nyiragongo conducted between 2004 and 2012 with a network of ground-based scanning-DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) remote sensors. The mean SO2 emission rate is found to be 13 ± 9 kg s−1, similar to that observed in 1959. Daily emission rate has a distribution close to log-normal and presents large inter-day variability, reflecting the dynamics of percolation of magma batches of heterogeneous size distribution and changes in the effective permeability of the lava lake. The degassed S content is found to be between 1000 and 2000 ppm from these measurements and the reported magma flow rates sustaining the lava lake. The inter-annual trend and plume height statistics indicate stability of a quiescently degassing lava lake during the period of study.

  • Lithium-ion batteries – Current state of the art and anticipated developments
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-7753 .- 1873-2755. ; 479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lithium-ion batteries are the state-of-the-art electrochemical energy storage technology for mobile electronic devices and electric vehicles. Accordingly, they have attracted a continuously increasing interest in academia and industry, which has led to a steady improvement in energy and power density, while the costs have decreased at even faster pace. Important questions, though, are, to which extent and how (fast) the performance can be further improved, and how the envisioned goal of truly sustainable energy storage can be realized. Herein, we combine a comprehensive review of important findings and developments in this field that have enabled their tremendous success with an overview of very recent trends concerning the active materials for the negative and positive electrode as well as the electrolyte. Moreover, we critically discuss current and anticipated electrode fabrication processes, as well as an essential prerequisite for “greener” batteries – the recycling. In each of these chapters, we eventually summarize important remaining challenges and propose potential directions for further improvement. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief summary of the performance metrics of commercial lithium-ion cells and a few thoughts towards the future development of this technology including several key performance indicators for the mid-term to long-term future.

  • Accelerating Battery Characterization Using Neutron and Synchrotron Techniques: Toward a Multi-Modal and Multi-Scale Standardized Experimental Workflow
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advanced Energy Materials. - : Wiley. - 1614-6840 .- 1614-6832. ; 12:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Li-ion batteries are the essential energy-storage building blocks of modern society. However, producing ultra-high electrochemical performance in safe and sustainable batteries for example, e-mobility, and portable and stationary applications, demands overcoming major technological challenges. Materials engineering and new chemistries are key aspects to achieving this objective, intimately linked to the use of advanced characterization techniques. In particular, operando investigations are currently attracting enormous interest. Synchrotron- and neutron-based bulk techniques are increasingly employed as they provide unique insights into the chemical, morphological, and structural changes inside electrodes and electrolytes across multiple length scales with high time/spatial resolutions. However, data acquisition, data analysis, and scientific outcomes must be accelerated to increase the overall benefits to the academic and industrial communities, requiring a paradigm shift beyond traditional single-shot, sophisticated experiments. Here a multi-scale and multi-technique integrated workflow is presented to enhance bulk characterization, based on standardized and automated data acquisition and analysis for high-throughput and high-fidelity experiments, the optimization of versatile and tunable cells, as well as multi-modal correlative characterization. Furthermore, new mechanisms, methods and organizations such as artificial intelligence-aided modeling-driven strategies, coordinated beamtime allocations, and community-unified infrastructures are discussed in order to highlight perspectives in battery research at large scale facilities.

  • Spin-glass transition in a La-doped Sr2MnWO6 double perovskite
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW B. ; 77:6, s. 064418-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polycrystalline Sr2-xLaxMnWO6 (x=0.25 and 0.5) materials have been prepared by a traditional solid state sintering method and studied by neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and magnetization measurements. Rietveld analysis of the temperature dependent NPD data shows that the compounds crystallize in monoclinic symmetry (space group P2(1)/n). The unit cell volume decreases with increasing La3+ concentration at the A site. The crystal structure contains alternating MnO6 and WO6 octahedra, considerably tilted due to the relative small size of the cations that occupy the A sublattice of the perovskite. ac and dc magnetization measurements show a destruction of the low temperature antiferromagnetic phase by electron doping through substitution of Sr2+ for La3+. The electron doping creates a mixed tungsten valence (W6+/W5+) resulting in a low temperature spin-glass state.

  • Permeability in lime plaster in relation to durability of covered materials
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 32nd IAHS World Congress on Housing – Sustainability of the Housing Projects. Trento, Italy 2004.. ; 1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In restoration of old buildings, lime plasters are used for reasons of authenticity and for technicalreasons as well. In many traditional constructions, there is wood behind the plasters or there is old limemortar in the masonry. For the durability of both these underlying materials, it is important that therelative humidity, RH is not too high under a long time of exposure. This can lead to an accelerateddegradation process of wood and leaching of lime in mortars. To prevent this, the plaster must have aproper permeability. The permeability of a material determines its ability to transport gas and moisture. In lime plasters, permeability affects hardening, carbonation as well as durability of the underlying materials. In thepresent paper, eleven mixtures of lime mortar were studied. The binders used were lime slaked in fourdifferent ways, hydraulic lime and cement. The following measurements were made to analyse the permeability and the pore structure of thesamples. Gas permeability and draining curves give an indication of rate of carbonation. Vapourpermeability shows the ability of plaster to transmit moisture at different RH. Thin sections were madefor microscopically investigations of the samples. The investigations show that both the vapour permeability and gas permeability decreases with anincreased amount of hydraulic binder in the lime plasters. Even small amounts of hydraulic binderhave a significant effect.By connecting these results with examples from reality, the picture becomes clearer. In the medievaltown Visby in Sweden, there are several examples of both rotten wood and disintegrated lime mortars. It is constructions from 13th to 19th centuries and low permeable cementitious plasters have coveredthem all, during the middle of the 20th century.

  • The influence of craftsmanship on the inner structures of lime plasters
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International RILEM Workshop Repair Mortars for Historic Masonry. Delft, Holland 2005.. - : Rilem publications. ; 1, s. 11-20
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of traditional lime plaster in restoration of old buildings is motivated by bothtechnical and historic reasons. The plasterer deals daily with a multivariable problem wherethe variables are related in such a complex way that we are not even close to findingconverging solutions by traditional scientific methods. The decisions and actions of thecraftsman will have an influence on both the surface structure and the inner structure of thelime plaster. The present paper will focus on the time between application of mortar andworking on the surface to make a floated finish. In total, 32 lime plaster surfaces have beenanalysed. Half of them have been worked on after they have stiffened up and half of themhave been worked on while they are still fresh. The results clearly show that the time betweenapplication of mortar and working the surface is a critical parameter. If you wait until theright time, you receive a more homogeneous and compact material with an open surface anda higher frost resistance.

  • The influence of particle size and structure in hydrated lime on the properties of the lime putty and lime mortar
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International journal of architectural heritage. - Philadelphia : Taylor & Francis. - 1558-3058 .- 1558-3066. ; 4:2, s. 86-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this work, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of lime slaked in different ways and analysis of thin section of lime putty and mortar specimens by light microscopy was combined with practical tests and field studies to evaluate the impact of the slaking technique on the properties of the lime putty as well as the structure of the fresh and carbonated mortar. The lime slaking methods studied were wet slaking and earth slaking, giving lime putties with very different consistency and workability. The aim of this work was to use microscopy techniques to explain these differences in properties and to investigate if it is possible to use these analytical methods to recognize the lime-slaking technique used in a historical lime mortar. The results obtained by SEM show significant differences in structure between the lime putties. The earth-slaked lime consists of relatively large particles that are packed in a porous system compared with the wet-slaked lime with very small particles closely packed in a dense structure. After storing, the wet-slaked lime gives a putty that has a dense and clearly defined stratified structure, whereas the earth-slaked lime is porous and has no stratification.

  • The pore structure in lime plaster as a key to understanding moisture transportation properties and frost damages
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: 10th International Congress on the Deterioration and Conservation of Stone. ; 2, s. 1033-1040
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pore structure is of great importance for a materials ability to hold and transport gasand moisture. In lime plaster, it affects hardening, carbonation as well as durability againstfrost damage. In the present paper, eleven mixtures of lime mortar were studied withrespect to frost damages. The binders used were lime slaked in four different ways, hydraulic lime and cement.Several analyses were made to characterize the transport properties and the porestructure of the materials; density, porosity, sorption curves, capillary water suction andthin sections. This study shows that there is a correlation between pore structure andimportant material properties. By studying these parameters, it is possible to get a goodpicture of the materials ability to resist frost damages. The study also gives an indication ofwhat materials in the mortar such as binders, aggregates and water, give a good porestructure.
