  • Characterisation of Titanium Dental Implants. II: Local Biomechanical Model
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Open Biomaterials Journal. - : Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.. - 1876-5025. ; 2, s. 36-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A theoretical model for estimation of the bone-to-implant interfacial shear strength induced by implant surface roughness has been developed. Two different assumptions regarding the constitutive behaviour of the interfacial bone were made. 1) The bone exhibits an ideally plastic deformation – the plastic mode. 2) The bone exhibits a linearly elastic deformation – the elastic mode. In the plastic mode it was found that the estimated interfacial shear strength was directly proportional to the 2D surface roughness parameter mean slope. For the elastic mode a new 2D surface roughness parameter was defined. With this parameter a direct proportionality between parameter value and estimated interfacial shear strength was also obtained in the elastic mode. The model was extended into 3D mode. The model was used to evaluate topographies of implant surfaces. The calculated results showed a similar trend to interfacial shear strength results reported in vivo.

  • Constituting water sector reform in Niger. Implementing the Programme Approach
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the European African Studies biannual conference, June 2009, in Leipzig..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Based on newly collected material from Niger, this paper discusses the process of implementing the Millennium Development Goal, MDG, Target 10, to halve by 2015 the proportion of the population who lacks access to safe water. The implementation of the PRSP, together with the HIPC, has resulted in increased multilateral and bilateral assistance to Niger in general and to the water sector in particular. The Water Sector Project has been recognized as one of the most successful operations in the World Bank’s portfolio in Niger. Today it is one of three sectors in Niger in the forefront of the development of the programme approach, in line with the Paris declaration. As such, a process of negotiating state responsibility is under way through the transformation of development cooperation from projects to programmes. Whereas the project approach is perceived as having had the effect of making the state less responsible, the programme approach is expected to make the state more responsible. This upcoming paper, which will be part of my dissertation, is based on interviews with state officials in the water sector, focusing on their understanding of the new structures and how they provide possibilities and influence state responsibility for water services provision. It is based on studies in the water sector in Niger between 2001 and 2008.

  • Dependence and Autonomy: Conditions of Possibility for Nigerien Ownership in the Water Sector
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1750-2977 .- 1750-2985. ; 9:2, s. 256-277
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order for development assistance to contribute to sustainable reform it is considered necessary for recipient states to become owners of and assume leadership over their own policies and strategies. Based on state–agent narratives and participation in ministry–donor negotiation meetings and workshops, this paper investigates the process of achieving Nigerien ownership in the water sector through the implementation of the programme approach. Against the backdrop of new mechanisms of aid and promises for the future, the article shows how Nigerien ownership in the water sector is imagined as the ability to act, which requires the close presence of donors rather than autonomous decision-making. At the same time, the promise of agency creates a space for negotiation of the role of the state that may or may not be utilized.

  • Developing and testing the urban sustainable development goal’s targets and indicators - a five city study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Environment & Urbanization. - : SAGE Publications. - 0956-2478 .- 1746-0301. ; 28:1, s. 49-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The campaign for the inclusion of a specifically urban goal within the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was challenging. Numerous divergent interests were involved, while urban areas worldwide are also extremely heterogeneous. It was essential to minimize the number of targets and indicators while still capturing critical urban dimensions relevant to human development. It was also essential to test the targets and indicators. This paper reports the findings of a unique comparative pilot project involving co-production between researchers and local authority officials in five diverse secondary and intermediate cities: Bangalore (Bengaluru), India; Cape Town, South Africa; Gothenburg, Sweden; Greater Manchester, United Kingdom; and Kisumu, Kenya. Each city faced problems in providing all the data required, and each also proposed various changes to maximize the local relevance of particular targets and indicators. This reality check provided invaluable inputs to the process of finalizing the urban SDG prior to the formal announcement of the entire SDG set by the UN Secretary-General in late September 2015.

  • Global biomechanical model for dental implants.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of biomechanics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-2380 .- 0021-9290. ; 44:6, s. 1059-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The osseointegration of titanium dental implants is a complex process and there is a need for systematization of the factors influencing anchoring of implant. A common way of analyzing the strength of the fixation in bone is by measuring the torque required to remove the implants after healing. In this paper, a global biomechanical model is introduced and derived for removal torque situations. In this model, a gap is allowed to form between the bone and the implant and the size of the gap at fracture is a function of the surface roughness and can be shown to be directly related to the mean slope of the surface. The interfacial shear strength increases almost linearly with the mean slope and was also found to increase with an increase in the 2D surface roughness parameter, R(a). Besides the surface roughness, the design of the implant, the bone anatomy and the bone quality were shown to influence the interfacial shear strength. The Global biomechanical model can be used as a tool for optimizing the implant design and the surface topography to obtain high anchoring strength.

  • Governance for sustainable urban development: the double function of SDG indicators
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Area Development and Policy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2379-2957 .- 2379-2949. ; 4:3, s. 217-235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the core of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is the imperative of monitoring progress and holding policy-makers accountable. For this purpose, 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 230 global indicators were established with the double function of being a report card and a management tool. In the light of a pilot study about the experiences of local planning officials in the City of Gothenburg, Sweden, in relation to the suggested indicators for SDG 11, ‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’, and a comparison with findings in four other cities, the paper argues for a need to reprioritize indicator criteria to serve better governance for sustainable development in diverse urban contexts worldwide.

  • MDGs Negotiated. Constituting water sector reform in Niger.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the Annual Convention of International Studies Association, February 2009, New York.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper is the elaboration of one of the chapters of my thesis Who Brings the Water? Negotiating state responsibility in water sector reform in Niger. The dissertation deals with negotiation of state responsibility in water sector reform on three levels in Niger, between state and donors in the process of implementing the Paris declaration, between state and local level in the decentralisation process, and thirdly, between public and private actors in the privatisation process. This paper deals with ownership as one way of making the state more responsible for its development strategies and in this case as provider of public services, such as water. It centres on how state officials rationalise their own positions and the role of the state within the present reforms, aiming at attaining the Millennium Development water target, to halve by 2015, the proportion of the population who lack access to safe drinking water.

  • Politics and Development in a Transboundary Watershed: The Case of the Lower Mekong Basin
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Politics and development in a transboundary watershed : the case of the Lower Mekong Basin. - Dordrecht : Springer. - 9789400704756 ; , s. 1-18
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This introductory chapter presents the main theme of the volume: the perceived dilemmas in pursuing IWRM in a transboundary context. The chapter discusses the IWRM approach and its package of progressive values and practices that focus on integration and participation and contrast it to transboundary politics and its tendency to remain within a state logic that emphasises sovereignty and national interests. In order to realise sustainable, efficient and inclusive water management, the chapter argues that it is essential to recognise and visualise power asymmetries and politics in regional water politics. Based on this assumption – that politics matter – the chapter contends that there is a need to explore how the perceived dichotomy between the interests of state sovereignty and (progressive) transboundary water management is played out in the Mekong River Basin. Together with its 50-year history of institutionalised cooperation and the river basin’s significance in terms of supporting local livelihoods and its contribution to the region’s national economies, the case is of paramount importance and interest. The disputed results and uncertain future in the region illustrate the complexity of achieving efficient, equitable and ecologically sustainable water management in a competitive international system. It thus makes up an excellent case study to illuminate the politics of IWRM in a transboundary setting. The different chapters of the volume, which are set to unpack, scrutinise, and illuminate the politics of the Lancang-Mekong Basin, are introduced at the end of the chapter. This section thus indicates some of the possible ways forward, challenges, dilemmas and incompatibilities in sustainable water management in the region which will be dealt with in more depth throughout the book.

  • Who brings the water? Negotiating state responsibility in water sector reform in Niger.
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For over 40 years the water sector in Niger has been subject to constant reform reflecting and accompanying general changes in the construction of the role of the state in provision of public services. This is a process that has closely followed different movements in what can be called glo-bal development discourse. Due to dependence on external funds, con-temporary reforms continue to be shaped by development cooperation, to a large extent dominated by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRSP), and the Paris Declarat-ion on aid effectiveness. This thesis explores how Nigerien state agents articulate state re-sponsibility in the water sector, thus shaping how policy and practice is conceived of. The aim is to better understand the possibility for Nigerien state responsibility in water service provision in a context of heavy de-pendence on aid. The main body of the thesis is based on interviews made with 27 Ni-gerien state agents in the water sector, as well as on participation in state-donor meetings and workshops between 2007 and 2010. It is argued in the thesis that in order to understand effects of power it does not suffice to analyse governing logics but we have to pay closer attention to the agency of being governed. Meaning, in this case, how the state agents constitute themselves as responsible subjects. The thesis approaches state agent subjectivities through narrative method, analysing how they narrate themselves and the state temporally in terms of choice and control in ways that shape how responsibility is understood. As such the thesis ex-plores the way in which state agents translate the responsibilising logics of development cooperation as well as how they constitute themselves as ethical subjects in relation to the population.
