- Today coin-op machines dominates the gaming market, accounting for 68 per cent of the casino revenues in Nevada and around 80 per cent of total revenues in the U.S. Only 30 years ago, their importance was considerably lower. Although many studies has emphasized the role of deregulation of casinos for the growth in the gaming industry the last decades, few has paid attention to the concurrent new growth opportunities created by the shift from electromechanical to digital technology. Hence, the introduction of digital technology spurred a revolution in the previously electromechanical coin-up market from the end of the 70s onward. Coin-op machines entered its most innovative period and disruptive business models were introduced in the market by new firms. Realizing the potential of the emerging technology, Si Redd’s newly founded IGT was able to build up an innovative company that within a decade broke the almost monopolistic leadership that Bally had in coin-up machine manufacturing. The new digital technology did not only change the existing coin-op market. Even more important was the creation of entirely new markets such as video poker. Subsequently, further changes where introduced as network technologies made possible progressive machines and digital casino administration systems. The paper studies the impact that the transition from electromechanical to electronic technology had on the coin-op market. The argument is that this was an example of how disruptive technologies affected the business model of established market leaders, with special emphasis on the way IGT managed to conquer Bally’s industrial leadership.
