Stability of immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B during chemo-enzymatic epoxidation of fatty acids

- The parameters affecting the lipase activity and operational lifetime during chemo-enzymatic epoxidation of fatty acids were investigated. Immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B (Novozym (R) 435) was incubated in the presence of various reaction components (i.e. toluene, water, H2O2, oleic acid, perpalmitic acid, and epoxystearic acid, respectively) at temperatures between 20 and 60 degrees C followed by measurement of residual enzyme activity. Epoxystearic acid was shown to slightly inactivate the enzyme at 50 degrees C, while oleic acid and perpalmitic acid did not. No deactivation of the enzyme was observed in presence of toluene/water mixture within 48 h at 20-60 degrees C. In the presence of 6-12 M hydrogen peroxide, the enzyme was rather stable at 20 degrees C, while at 60 degrees C the enzyme lost activity rapidly, with the rate of deactivation increasing with increasing hydrogen peroxide concentration. These results imply that temperature control and careful dosage of hydrogen peroxide would be essential in an industrial chemo-enzymatic process. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Long term NOAA-AVHRR GIMMS-NDVI - rainfall relationships and trends 1981 to 2003 for entire DeSurvey area of interest

- The paper presents results of a study on the use of the NOAA AVHRR data for desertification monitoring on a regional-global level. It is based on processing of the GIMMS 8 km global NDVI data set. Time series of annual integrated NDVI and standardized annual NDVI anomalies from the 1981-2003 periodic means were compared with a corresponding rainfall data set (i.e. 1981-2003) as well as a historical rainfall set (1901-2002). Both sets were derived from 2.5 degrees and 0.5 degrees global gridded climate data respectively. The areas studied include the Mediterranean basin (Southern Europe and Northern Africa), the Sahel from the Atlantic to the Red Sea, major parts of the drylands of Southern Africa, China and the drylands of South America, i.e. important parts of the desertification prone areas of the world (Cf. fig. 1) It is concluded that the suggested methodology is a robust and reliable way to assess and monitor desertification on a global, national and regional scale. The results of the applied methodology indicate a strong general relationship between NDVI and rainfall over time. The results of performed trend analysis cannot be used to verify any systematic generic land degradation/desertification trend at the regional-global level in any of the regions studied. On the contrary, a “greening-up” seems to be evident over the past 20 years in several of the regions when interpreting the NDVI as a proxy for biomass cover and seasonal vegetation growth. This is most obvious in the African Sahel region south of the Sahara.

- Insgesamt lässt sich feststellen, dass der Hebräerbrief ein klares Ja zu einem Weierleben nach dem Tode (über Auferstehung und Gericht) enthält. Von Anfang an ist der Gedanke von zwei Äonen, von zwei verschiedenen Welten, der jetzigen und einer kommenden mit im Blick. Es fehlt zwar der Begriff des , wie ihn insbesondere das Johannesevangelium enthält, aber ähnliche Begriffe füllen dieselbe Funktion und sprechen für dieselbe Vorstellung eines zukünftigen ewigen Lebens in Gottes Nähe. Dieses ewige Leben in der Nähe Gottes verbürgt vor allem Jesus Christus als der Hohepriester. Der Verfasser des Hebr gibt aber nur Andeutungen und überlässt es dodann der Fantasie seiner Leser oder Hörer, sich die zukünftige Welt vorzustellen. Es sind mehr oder weniger nüchterne Vorstellungen vom Heil, vom grossen und gerechten Lohn, von Frieden und Freude, dem himmlischen Jerusalem, einer Stadt, deren Baumeister der ist und von eiem unerschütterlichen und daher Reich und der grossen Ruhe, dem eschatologischen Sabbatismos. Auch das Gericht für die Ungerechten und Ungläubigen (Gegner 10,29) wird nur ganz allgemein beschrieben. Es fehlen breite Ausbrodierungen von Qual und ewigen Schmerzen wie sie zum Beispiel in apokalyptischen Schriften und der Offenbarung des Johannes vorkommen. Es scheint genug zu sein, zu sagen: "fürchterlich ist es, in die Hände des lebendigen Gottes zu fallen" oder "unser Gott ist ein ", das auf die wartet, die das Heil nicht erben, weil sie es zugunsten irdischer Vorteile vernachlässigten.

- Conclusion: The rich supply of nerve fibres containing neurotransmitters, particularly those containing SP and CGRP, is suggested to be a prerequisite for the recognition of chemical irritants as part of a chemical sense. Objective: The present study was designed to examine the distribution of different neurotransmitter candidates in the vomeronasal organ (VNO) of rats. Materials and methods: The distribution of neurotransmitter candidates was studied in the vomeronasal organ of the rat using immunocytochemistry. Results: The neuronal marker protein gene product 9.5 revealed a very rich supply of nerve fibres within and beneath the sensory epithelium, around blood vessels and glands. A moderate supply of nerve fibres containing tyrosine hydroxylase and neuropeptide Y was mostly seen close to blood vessels. Numerous nerve fibres containing nitric oxide synthase and vasoactive intestinal peptide were seen around blood vessels and in the subepithelial layer, with occasional fibres within the epithelium. Only few fibres located in the subepithelial layer contained pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide. Nerve fibres containing substance P and in particular calcitonin gene-related peptide were abundant in and beneath the epithelium and scattered in the submucosal layers around blood vessels.

- The control of synthetic genetic regulatory networks is an emerging engineering challenge. In this study, we propose a new synthetic genetic network that behaves as a digital clock, producing square waveform oscillations. We analyze two models of the network: a deterministic model based on Michaelis-Menten kinetics, as well as a stochastic model based on the Gillespie algorithm. Both models predict regions of oscillatory behavior; the deterministic model provides insight into the conditions required to produce the oscillating clock-like behavior, while the stochastic model is truer to natural dynamics. Intracellular stochasticity is seen to contribute phase noise to the oscillator, and we propose improvements for the network and discuss the conceptual foundations of these improvements.

- The thesis uses, as a starting point for a discussion of emergency response management, the problem of gradual coordinated adaptation of management functions in relation to an event and its dynamics. Empirical observations and analyses carried out in the research project show that important problemsolving processes not included in, and sometimes diverging from, planning and preparations frequently occur. The thesis focuses on the managerial problems connected with a variety of different organisations needing to cooperate at a time of emergency or disaster and presents literature findings useful for analysing such problems. Moreover, a method for empirical analysis based on a systems and network approach, and examples of how the method can be employed, is suggested together with a discussion of how emergency response can be influenced by the extent to which the decision makers know and trust each other.
