- In this paper, we examine the role of paradoxes as narrative devices in organizational contexts. A merger between two banks is used to illustrate managers employing paradoxes to construct meaning and to influence future actions of organizational members. We argue that when paradoxes are reshaped as hybrids, they provide a buffer between conflicting arguments. By employing hybrids, organizational storytellers facilitate links between existing and desired mental frameworks, thus potentially rendering transitions and changes less friction-prone. A convincing story told under these forms - Striking the right balance between potentially incommensurable but both in their own way appealing ideas - Has the potentiality to create an inclusive vision in which diverse groups can find "their" place.

- Order tracking is a widely used tool for analysis of vibrations generated in vehicle drivetrain components, since many vibrations are related to engine RPMs. In recent years, offline order tracking has become suitable due to enhanced computer speeds. Many methods, some patented, for both online and offline order tracking have been presented over the years. This article reviews some basic ideas behind current methods and compares their main advantages and limitations. Some basic time-frequency concepts and time window effects are reviewed. Questions on suitable tachometers and their number of pulses per revolution are also addressed. The possibility of processing RPM dependent data without tachometers is also discussed.

The quality of details when children with intellectual disabilities are eye witnesses.

- We do not know enough about how children and youths with intellectual disabilities are able to describe their experiences of abuse in real forensic interviews. Thus, this was the focus of the present study. We explored the quality of details when 33 children and youths with intellectual disabilities were interviewed about their abuse experiences. Their chronological ages were between 5.3 and 19.1 years (M = 12.1 years) when the last incident of abuse occurred. Unfortunately few invitations and a large number of leading and directive questions were asked. However, the invitations elicited much more central and peripheral information compared to any other question type. The children also to a large extent disagreed to leading and suggestive statements.

An alpha-pi transition in S6 shapes the conformational cycle of the bacterial sodium channel NavAb

- Voltage-gated sodium channels play an important role in electrical signaling in excitable cells. In response to changes in membrane potential, they cycle between nonconducting and conducting conformations. With recent advances in structural biology, structures of sodium channels have been captured in several distinct conformations, which are thought to represent different functional states. However, it has been difficult to capture the intrinsically transient open state. We recently showed that a proposed open state of the bacterial sodium channel NavMs was not conductive and that a conformational change involving a transition to a pi-helix in the pore-lining S6 helix converted this structure into a conducting state. However, the relevance of this structural feature in other sodium channels, and its implications for the broader gating cycle, remained unclear. Here, we propose a comparable open state of another class of bacterial channel from Aliarcobacter butzleri (NavAb) with characteristic pore hydration, ion permeation, and drug binding properties. Furthermore, we show that a pi-helix transition can lead to pore opening and that such a conformational change blocks fenestrations in the inner helix bundle. We also discover that a region in the C-terminal domain can undergo a disordering transition proposed to be important for pore opening. These results support a role for a pi-helix transition in the opening of NavAb, enabling new proposals for the structural annotation and drug modulation mechanisms in this important sodium channel model. We propose a new conformational cycle for NavAb wherein an alpha- to pi-helix transition in S6 and disordering of the neck region of the C-terminal domain is important for pore opening.

Ruling out cardiac failure : Cost-benefit analysis of a sequential testing strategy with NT-proBNP before echocardiography

- Objectives. To estimate the possible economic benefit of a sequential testing strategy with NT-proBNP to reduce the number of echocardiographies.Methods. Retrospective study in a third-party payer perspective. The costs were calculated from three Swedish counties: Blekinge, Östergötland, and Uppland. Two cut-off levels of NT-proBNP were used: 400 and 300 pg/mL. The cost-effectiveness of the testing strategy was estimated through the short-term cost avoidance and reduction in demand for echocardiographies.Results. The estimated costs for NT-proBNP tests and echocardiographies per county were reduced by 33%–36% with the 400 pg/mL cut-off and by 28%–29% with the 300 pg/mL cut-off. This corresponded to a yearly cost reduction of approximately €2–5 million per million inhabitants in these counties.Conclusion. The use of NT-proBNP as a screening test could substantially reduce the number of echocardiographies in the diagnostic work-up of patients with suspected cardiac failure, as well as the associated costs.

Clinical and Biological Aspects of Cardiovascular microRNA

- Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death in high-income parts of the world and is caused mainly by atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries. The rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque with subsequent platelet activation and clot formation can lead to myocardial infarction (MI). Atherosclerosis is a complex process, which involves the accumulation and oxidation of low-density lipoprotein in the vessel wall followed by endothelial inflammation, infiltration of monocytes and proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells towards the vessel lumen. microRNA (miRNA) is a class of short non-coding RNA which regulate gene expression through part-complimentary binding to target sites preferably within the 3’-UTR of specific mRNAs. miRNAs have pervasive roles in animal biology and aberrant expression of miRNAs have been linked with a wide spectrum of human disease. Additionally, the tissue specific manner of miRNA expression together with remarkable stability in plasma and evidence of release of miRNA from stressed or apoptotic cells have made miRNAs interesting as biomarkers for various diseases. The aim of this thesis was (1) to assess the diagnostic and prognostic value of cardiac-enriched miRNAs in the context of coronary artery disease, (2) to screen for differences in miRNA content in platelets from myocardial infarction patients and elucidate a potential paracrine function for platelet miRNA and (3) to investigate the role of miRNAs in regulating endothelial inflammation in response to extracellular ATP/UTP. In Study I and II, we found that cardiac-enriched miRNAs are increased 100-3000 fold within 12 h following onset of symptoms in patients with myocardial infarction and that the levels of two specific miRNAs, miR-208b and-499-5p, could be used to discriminate MI-patients from non-MI patients and were associated with increased risk of death and development of heart failure. In Study III, we found differentially expressed platelet miRNAs in MI patients compared to healthy controls using RNA-sequencing. Release of miRNAs upon platelet activation, as well as microparticle-dependent transfer of functional platelet-derived miRNA to endothelial cells was also shown in vitro. In Study IV, we showed that the effects of ATP and UTP on cell surface expression of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and leukocyte adhesion is mediated in part by miR-22 in endothelial cells. In conclusion, the levels of circulating cardiac-enriched miRNA have diagnostic and prognostic value in the context of coronary artery disease, platelet-derived miRNA can act as paracrine mediators in endothelial cells and miR-22 plays an anti-inflammatory role in the endothelium.
