  • Dielectric and Plasmon Slot Waveguides for Photonic Integration

    • Slot waveguides formed either in high-index dielectrics or in metals attract great interest because they provide sub-wavelength confinement in the slot region. While this feature is very attractive for devices relying on stimulated emission or nonlinear effects, it does not necessarily improve the integration density. The spacing between dielectric slot waveguides is still limited by diffraction. Although for metal (plasmon) waveguides the total field can be shrunk far beyond the diffraction limit, the associated increase in propagation loss will set practical limits on both the minimum waveguide width and edge-to-edge separation. Here we compare the packing densities for 3D slot waveguides in silicon and plasmon waveguides in gold with a silicon slot. As a reference we also consider silicon photonic wire. We calculate center-to-center waveguide separations (pitch) versus cross-talk level. We show that at ca 24 dB/mu m cross-talk and requiring the attenuation length of at least 5 mu m, plasmon slot waveguides can be packed ca 3.5 times denser than silicon slot waveguides, and ca 2.5 times denser than photonic wires. We also show examples of the fabricated devices.

  • Clinical Evaluation of Serum Alpha-Fetoprotein-IgM Immune Complexes on the Diagnosis of Primary Hepatocellular Carcinoma

    • We evaluated clinical significance of serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)-IgM immune complexes, in comparison with free AFP, on the diagnosis of primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Serum levels of AFP-IgM immune complexes and free AFP were determined by the ELISA method and electrochemiluminescence, respectively, in 103 healthy controls, 74 patients suffering from primary HCC, 27 patients suffering from liver cirrhosis, and 63 patients suffering from chronic hepatitis. The best cut-off value of AFP-IgM and free AFP for diagnosis of primary HCC were 300 AU/mL and 10 mu g/L respectively, according to the area under the curve (AUC) in this study. The sensitivity of AFP-IgM and free AFP were 64.9 and 79.7%, and the specificity were 75.6 and 80.3%, respectively, when all cases of primary HCC were analyzed, and the AUC of free AFP was larger than that of AFP-IgM (0.85 vs. 0.72, Z = 3.21). However, in case of primary HCC at early stages (stages I and II) were analyzed, the AUC of AFP-IgM was larger than that of free AFP (0.91 vs. 0.82, Z = 1.73), which demonstrated that the sensitivity of AFP-IgM and free AFP were 94.4 and 72.2%, and the specificity were 81.9 and 79.9%, respectively. When both AFP-IgM and free AFP were positive, the specificity of diagnosis of primary HCC was 89.1%, and the efficacy was 79.0%. It is concluded that either sensitivity or specificity of serum level of AFP-IgM immune complexes was higher than that of free AFP in the diagnosis of primary HCC at early stages. As there was false positive AFP-IgM existed in the patients suffering from cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis, the combination of free AFP and AFP-IgM could significantly increase specificity and decrease false negative and/or false positive in the primary HCC at early stages.   • High Sensitive Gas Sensor Application Based on a Small Defect in Silicon Waveguide

    • A small defect in silicon nanowire waveguides is applied for gas sensors. Small defects with some special shapes and indexes can produce strong resonances with the incident light and induce large loss. Since the silicon waveguide has air cladding, the position of resonant peaks will be sensitive for the variation of the ambient air composition. The sensor based on the principle has a high sensitivity. As an example, we monitored the change of the position of the resonance peak as a function of alcohol concentrations in air. Results showed that a similar to 5-mg/L ethanol vapor in the air can result in a similar to 20-nm wavelength shift of the resonance.

    • A bidirectional grating serving both as a polarization beam splitter and a vertical coupler for Silicon on Insulator nanophotonic circuits is fabricated and characterized. The measured coupling efficiency is as high as 43%. The demonstrated device has a large 3-dB bandwidth and a high extinction ratio between two orthogonal polarizations.

  • Ultracompact low-loss coupler between strip and slot waveguides

    • We present both theoretical and experimental results of an ultracompact waveguide coupler that is capable of highly efficient coupling of light from strip waveguides to slot waveguides, and vice versa. By optimizing the geometrical parameters, it is possible to achieve extremely low-loss coupling. A coupling efficiency of 97% has been obtained experimentally while keeping the overall size down to the range below 10 mu m. Further analysis shows that the proposed coupler has relatively high tolerance to fabrication errors and is wavelength insensitive. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

    • Wavelength Division Multiplexing systems use multiplexers and demultiplexers to increase network capacity by allowing several information channels to be placed into one fiber. Depending on the application multiplexers and demultiplexers can have wide, coarse or dense channel spacing as well as different number of channels that they process. There are many techniques available today for realization of these passive, wavelength selective components including: thin film filters, Bragg gratings, arrayed waveguide gratings and echelle gratings. The last two solutions appear to be most suitable for wafer scale mass production. Silicon-based technology additionally allows for a high level of integration and compatibility with CMOS processing. Here we discuss issues related to different solutions and fabrication technologies and compare two of them based on planar lightwave circuits. We will illustrate with designed and fabricated components for different applications.

    • Experimental results are presented for a high quality factor cavity based on pillar arrays. The cavityis formed from a square lattice of silicon pillars of finite height. The quality factor of the fundamental mode is about 7300 when the cavity is in air and 7800 when it is immersed in water.Since a pillar array has a large percent of connected void space and confines TM modes effectively,it has great promise for use in numerous areas including biochemical sensing and quantum cascade lasers.

    • A triplexer based on silicon nanophotonic wire structure consisting of two Bragg grating-assisted directional couplers is proposed. The device has low loss, low crosstalk, and a footprint of only 210 x40 μm, The 1-dB bandwidth for the three channels located at 1310, 1490 and 1550 nm are 110, 20, and 20 nm, respectively.
