  • Webinar - Integrating Carbon Capture & Storage Technology Using Simulation
  • 2019
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Webinar hosted by Modelon AB Decarbonization and sustainable development of power systems have become top priorities in the power sector. In order to achieve an environmentally sustainable and stable power system, thermal power plants need to become more flexible, efficient, and produce lower specific emissions than what they do today. Therefore, one of the biggest challenges power sector companies face is successfully transitioning towards decarbonized power systems while being smart about investment and accounting for the variability of both renewable energy sources and demand.    Modelon teamed up with researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) to prove how Modelon’s Thermal Power Library can be used to design a more flexible and decarbonized power plant. In this webinar, our presenters will walk us through their study of building a scalable plant model, using data from a large-scale pilot plant to validate their model, designing control structures, and effectively integrating Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) technology to lower power plant emissions. Main presenters: Researcher Dr. Rubén Mocholí Montañés (Chalmers) and Industry Director Energy and Process Dr. Stephane Velut (Modelon AB) Host: Marketing Manager Swati Tyagi from (Modelon AB)

  • Understanding hydrodynamic and climate effects on the transboundary Lake Victoria basin at a catchment scale
  • Other publication (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
    • This study examines how hydrodynamic processes in the catchment area of Lake Victoria are affected by climate change. A methodology was developed using numerical modelling and long-term geospatial mapping methods to understand the influence of climate change on hydro-meteorological processes in Lake Victoria, utilising satellite and climatic data from 1900 to 2020. The methodology enables the examination of how hydrodynamic processes, like the inflow of water to the lake and responses to water level variations, are impacted by climate variables. The resulting model demonstrates the crucial interdependence between hydrodynamic processes and climatological factors. Long-term rainfall variation shows a linear positive correlation, which explains the increase in the lake’s overall water level. With respect to the bathymetry as well as the areal coverage, the presence of nutrients in the lake water helps to identify pollution patterns and water quality. Given the regional importance of shallow freshwater lakes across the world, Lake Victoria provides an exceptional case study and the study shows how numerical modelling can improve understanding of the relationship between the physical features of shallow lakes and their hydrodynamics. This includes analysing flow patterns, hydro-meteorological processes, transport of pollutants, and the impact of eutrophication. These factors are crucial in determining water levels and water quality, especially in face of climate change.

  • GCCSI Webinar: Cutting Cost of CO2 Capture in Process Industry (CO2stCap) Project overview & first results for partial CO2 capture at integrated steelworks
  • 2017
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • GCCSI Webinar: Cutting Cost of CO2 Capture in Process Industry (CO2stCap) Project overview & first results for partial CO2 capture at integrated steelworks This publication has the format of a webinar: The CO2StCap project is a four year initiative carried out by industry and academic partners with the aim of reducing capture costs from CO2 intensive industries (more information here). The project, led by Tel-Tek, is based on the idea that cost reduction is possible by capturing only a share of the CO2 emissions from a given facility, instead of striving for maximized capture rates. This can be done in multiple ways, for instance by capturing only from the largest CO2 sources at individual multi-stack sites utilising cheap waste heat or adapting the capture volumes to seasonal changes in operations. The main focus of this research is to perform techno-economic analyses for multiple partial CO2 capture concepts in order to identify economic optimums between cost and volumes captured. In total for four different case studies are developed for cement, iron & steel, pulp & paper and ferroalloys industries. The first part of the webinar gave an overview of the project with insights into the cost estimation method used. The second part presented the iron & steel industry case study based on the Lulea site in Sweden, for which waste-heat mapping methodology has been used to assess the potential for partial capture via MEA-absorption. Capture costs for different CO2 sources were discussed, demonstrating the viability of partial capture in an integrated steelworks.

  • Webinar: The CO2stCap project and overall results
  • 2019
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • [recording at IEAGHG available on youtube - see link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tLLGKmMT9Y] The webinar will give an overview of the final results of the CO2stCap project. The CO2stCap-Project is a Norwegian-Swedish research initiative initiated in the Year 2015 to reduce the cost of carbon capture in the process industry by developing concepts for partial capture. The project focuses on four industrial processes that have process-related emissions of CO2 - that is, emissions are not only from heat supply but also part of the manufacturing process. Such emissions are likely to require CCS as they are difficult to reduce by measures like fuel-shift, electrification, or energy efficiency improvements. The project has showed that partial capture may reduce the cost for CO2 capture, and can be a first step for moving CCS forwards. Both technical and economical results will be presented at the webinar. Ragnhild Skagestad, SINTEF Industry will present " The CO2stCap project and overall results Max Bierman, Chalmers University will present " Scenario for near-term implementation of partial capture from blast furnace gases in Swedish steel industry" Anette Mathisen, SINTEF Industry will present " CO2 capture opportunities in the Norwegian silicon industry" Jens Wolf at RISE Bioeconomy will present " Partial Capture of CO2 From a Pulp Mill with Focus on Cost Reduction"

  • Modeling moisture and temperature dynamics in road structure during winter conditions
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Excess moisture significantly impact durability and sustainability of road components especially in cold regions. To improve understanding of moisture dynamics in roads with drainage system, hourly measured moisture content, soil temperature and groundwater level data during a 3-year period from a test site in Växjö, Sothern Sweden were utilized. Seasonal and manipulated changes in the groundwater level and moisture dynamics were observed that describe extreme conditions providing extra moisture to the upper layers of road. CoupModel was used to estimate mass and heat balance in four depths of two spots of the road section. Good performances of the model were achieved in calculation of the soil moisture in different depths. Soil water retention curve parameters were sensitive to constrain criteria which demonstrate importance of soil texture in controlling moisture dynamics. Model could properly capture temperature dynamic during winter time but simulated excess evaporation from soil layers reduced performance of model in the estimation of temperature during summer The combined monitoring and modelling of physical conditions in the road structure will be highly relevant to help decision makers and road engineers to avoid moisture in road structures and to also identify crucial events from meteorological data.

  • Uncertainty based approach to simulate groundwater levels in a hillslope upstream of a road
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Knowledge of the processes governing groundwater dynamics in the areas close to roads is important for sustainable road infrastructure in the face of a changing climate. This study established an uncertainty based approach to simulate groundwater oscillations in a hillslope upstream of a road by using a process based model. Four different soil configurations were analyzed in CoupModel to simulate groundwater dynamics in presence of a road drainage system by implementation of meteorological data as driving factors. An approach similar to GLUE method was applied to analyze the statistical performance of the simulated groundwater level versus high resolution measured groundwater level dynamics. Results of the simulations indicate deviations in simulated results due to different soil stratifications. Uncertainties resulted from the lack of precise information about the geological structure of the site are important contributors to deviated simulation results. Different scenarios showed different model performances in which a simpler soil profile describes better the groundwater dynamics when it is closer to the road drainage system while a more complicated soil profile better describes groundwater dynamics in undisturbed soils. Correlation between hydraulic conductivity of each layer and the model performance was discussed. The results also indicate significance of variables such as physical drainage characteristics of the road in governing level of saturations also the position of the road structure in a hillslope. Texture (hydraulic conductivity) of the soil layers that fluctuation of groundwater occurs in those layers and types of modifications that have been done due to road construction are important driving factors. These factors are suggested as suitable indicators for designing an early warning system based on physical characteristics of a road site.

  • System Dynamics vs. agent-based modeling—comparing models and approaches : A literature review and a transformation procedure
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Systems modeling and simulation methods such as System Dynamics (SD) and agent-based (AB) modeling have been used to foster a better understanding of the dynamics and complexity of natural, technical, and social systems. System Dynamics provides an aggregate-level perspective, highlighting thinking in feedback loops and employing differential equations to model the causal relations in a system, exploring the system's dynamics by numerically solving the equations. Agent-based modeling, in a bottom-up method, focuses on constituent units (agents) and their interactions to explore the emerging behavior at a system level by means of simulation. Comparing these modeling methods can help us understand their strengths and weaknesses in order to choose the right approach for a given modeling problem. It may also support the analysis of a given system to build multiple models using the different approaches and comparing them, in particular to treat fundamental uncertainties in systems modeling and simulation. In this paper, we review the existing studies comparing the SD and AB approaches and models, investigating the aims, methodology, and results of such comparative studies. We also highlight lessons learned for future model comparisons by examining how the corresponding SD and AB models are built for the purpose of comparison. A procedure for transforming System Dynamics models into agent-based models is presented and discussed using examples from the literature.
