  • Brominated aromatics from waste handling and recycling processes : The Flame Retardants Project
  • 1994
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Emissions of brominated aromatics from waste handling and recycling processes are discussed based on a number of investigations and measurements in waste incineration plants, steel plants and at waste landfills. Bromine in municipal waste at present levels does not seem to cause unacceptable environmental risks when treated in incineration plants with good combustion conditions and efficient flue gas cleaning. A significant increase of the bromine flow with the waste may result in an increased production of brominated aromatics. Flame retardants are important as bromine carriers, but not as specific precursor compounds. Scrap-metal re-melting processes are presently studied in an extensive test programme initiated by the industry, and a report is due in the summer of 1993. Accidental fires in waste landfills are discussed with the background of the high emissions of chlorinated aromatics. Significant emisssions of brominated aromatics can also be expected, irrespective of the bromine carrier. Precursors may play a role in this situation. (21 references).

  • Lake sediments around the Antarctic Peninsula : archives of climatic and environmental changes
  • 1993
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Lakes and lake sediments from four areas around the Antarctic Peninsula are described. The concentrations of trace metals in sediment are found to be a useful tool in distinguishing between the different sedimentary phases during a transition from marine to limnic environment.A tephrochronology based on Deception Island tephra is developed, and used to cross date sediments from different lakes in order to overcome the radiocarbon dating problem of the area. The fluctuating concentrations of copper and phosphorus from penguin guano in the sediment of Lake Boeckella are used as a proxy for the penguin inpact on the sediment, and the size of the penguin rookery on the shores of the lake. Anthropogenic activities in the area, as well as climatic changes are discussed in relation to the rookery size.A radiocarbon dating model developed for the sediment of Lake Boeckella showed that the radiocarbon correction factor in the sediment depends on the amount and apparent age of the penguin guano washed down into the lake, and the amount of particulate carbon from the watershed present in the sediment. Neither the "old" meltwater from the glaciers nor dissolved carbonates contributes significantly to the correction factor. The model is used to achieve more accurate radiocarbon dates of the Lake Boeckella sediment. This model, or a modified version, may contribute to a higher dating accuracy and a better understanding of the dating problems in Antarctica.Deglaciation dates, as well as data on the climatic and environmental history of Byers Peninsula on Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, of Hope Bay, Antarctic Peninsula and of Hidden Lake area, James Ross Island are given.

  • The Storsjön-Edsbyn Deformation Zone, central Sweden : Research report of a project entitled: "The tectonometamorphic history of a major shear zone in central Sweden - integrated geological-geophysical study"
  • 1994
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A major, polyphase NNW-SSE-striking deformation zone in central Sweden, 15-30 km wide and >200 km long, apparently separates two major Proterozoic provinces. Four main phases of deformation have been recognized along the deformation zone; associated mylonites are characterized by their mineralogy, microstructures, kinematic patterns, magnetic signatures and relative ages.Locally, metamorphic patterns developed during regional Svecofennian deformation and early shearing were significantly disturbed by later movements on mostly steep, greenschist facies deformation zones. As a result, previously unknown intermediate-high-pressure rocks were juxtaposed against low-pressure rocks more typical for the region. Also the geometry of the major, early Svecofennian Ljusdal Batholith, appears to be controlled by the shear zone and a previously unknown splay.Rotation of planar structures indicates >10-20 km dextral displacement along plastic mylonites. Stress- and strain analysis of mesoscopic shear zone populations of different generations suggests that most displacements are compatible with N-S to NE-SW-oriented bulk regional shortening. Most deformation occurred before intrusion of c. 1.2 Ga mafic dykes and sills. The existence of this deformation zone, however, significantly affected the depositional, metamorphic and structural evolution of the Caledonian orogen in this region.
