  • Subsidiary importance in the MNC: what role does internal embeddedness play?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Business Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-5931 .- 1873-6149. ; 20:2, s. 151-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At a conceptual level, the eclectic paradigm of international production has evolved in response to the growth of inter-firm alliances and networks. Yet, there is little empirical research on the nature, extent and compatibility of external network relationships formed at the subsidiary level to support this development. We propose that these relationships may be incorporated into the eclectic paradigm by measuring the extent of quasi-internalisation (transfer) of firm-specific advantages and resources between the subsidiary and local customers, suppliers, and alliance partners. Two distinctive features of this paper are observation of quasi-internalisation via subsidiary–network relationships, and exploration of the complementarity of quasi-internalisation with FDI. The study is based on data concerning 516 foreign subsidiaries headquartered in New Zealand. Our results indicate that quasi-internalisation of resources occurs via external network relationships, and complements FDI by allowing the subsidiary to become an organiser of both internal and external resources.

  • Bridging and bonding forms of social capital in a regional strategic network
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 40:6, s. 994-1003
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on networks emphasizes the importance of bonds between actors. Social reciprocity strengthens network bonds, which is assumed to have positive effects on business relationships between firms. However, the importance of weak ties is also stressed in network research. An important policy issue is therefore if more attention should be devoted to the creation of bridges to other social groups and loosening bonds between network actors. The difficulty in doing so is described and analyzed in this article focusing on a regional strategic network, which is viewed in three network perspectives. Interview data were collected from all participating managers in a regional strategic network in 2004 and 2010. The findings shed light upon the paradox of using a regional strategic network to counteract over-embeddedness and freeing the involved actors from existing network lock-ins instead of further strengthening such social institutions.

  • Thick performances, not just thick descriptions : the processual nature of doing qualitative research
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Qualitative research in organization and management. - : Emerald. - 1746-5648 .- 1746-5656. ; 6:2, s. 191-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the consequences of doing research that uses qualitative approaches. Anchored in a process ontology, this paper starts from the idea that doing research implies a performance in which the researcher is fully immersed, and explores the implications of the processual nature of doing research.Design/methodology/approach – The paper takes use of vignettes; short stories of research in action, told by different researchers that are analyzed to reveal the richness of the situation in question. These vignettes illustrate how performing qualitative research is an emotional, embodied and deeply personal experience.Findings – The authors show that when grounding qualitative research in a process ontology, research is the fruit of the researcher's performance: doing research is performing it, and performing it cannot happen without feeling a wide range of emotions, without appealing to who we are or without questioning what we are doing. Thus, this exploration reveals that doing research is a rich, complex and multi-level experience that mobilizes the whole person conducting this inquiry – that is, that doing research takes the form of a thick performance.Originality/value – The value of the paper lies in its roots in a process ontology to understand the doing of qualitative research, which makes it possible to fully acknowledge the importance of subjectivity in all the steps that make up the research endeavor, from the fieldwork to writing – thus offering not only a richer image of what research is about, but an image that is also closer to the experience of doing it.

  • Demokratisera nationalekonomin : Problmet är att nationalekonomi inte bara är vetenskap utan samtidigt ideologi
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Grus & Guld. - Skövde : JAK Medlemsbank. - 1650-4704. ; :2, s. 27-

  • Governing cooperation hazards of outsourced municipal low contractibility transactions : An exploratory configuration approach
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Management Accounting Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1044-5005 .- 1096-1224. ; 22:4, s. 292-312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasingly, public sector organizations (PSOs) outsource the delivering of important welfare services. This gives rise to important questions of how PSOs can control their suppliers. The purpose of this paper is to show how PSOs manage cooperation hazards of low contractibility transactions, i.e., activities expected to be difficult to govern. The paper applies a taxonomic configuration approach which means we apply a holistic view on the governance of suppliers and search for internally congruent governance packages that also are adapted to the context of the transactions. Three theoretically meaningful and qualitative different configurations appear in the empirical material. We find indications of the importance of internal congruence in governance packages in order to effectively deal with cooperation hazards and that the intensity in and types of controls in inter-organizational relationships are affected by the amount of cooperation hazards. A conflict between a relational and a market-based governance package in one of the configurations is argued to be the main driver behind lower expectations about positive behaviour from suppliers

  • ERP selection through business relationships : adaptations or connections
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneural Venturing. - 1742-5360. ; 3:1, s. 63-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses how a generic form of information technology (IT), enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, can be selected by companies to enhance their business. ERP systems are a means of becoming more efficient through predefined standard functions called 'best practices'. Following the theory that markets are made up of business relationships in a network context, managerial advice would be to assess the vendor's existing business relationships. A company can harvest the inherent functions that an ERP system has from the vendor's prior interaction with other customers. This paper discusses how a company benefits from engaging in a new business relationship with an ERP vendor to become more competitive. However, this relationship is double-edged. A lesson is that the functions developed by the ERP vendor and the customer only offer a temporal competitive advantage, given that it can be used later in the ERP vendor's other connected business relationships.

  • Promoting innovation based on social sciences and technologies : The prospect of a social innovation park
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Innovation. The European Journal of Social Science Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1351-1610 .- 1469-8412. ; 24:1-2, s. 133-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Obviously Sir Francis Bacon's phrase "Knowledge is Power" refers not only to natural science and technology, aiming at understanding natural phenomena and obtaining material wealth, but also to social sciences and technologies, concerning social ideals and seeking harmonious and sustainable development in society. Innovation and entrepreneurship based on natural sciences and technologies have facilitated science and technology parks in the past; however, innovation and entrepreneurship based on social sciences and technologies are now laying the foundations for the concept of a "social innovation park". The distinctive characteristics of social innovation parks and how social academic entrepreneurship is fostered by them through strategy and policy-making at local, national and global levels are explored in this study.
