  • Mobile phone quality vs. direct quality : How the presentation format affects earwitness identification accuracy
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The European Journal of Psychology Applied to Legal Context. - : Sociedad Española de Psicología Jurídica y Forense. - 1889-1861 .- 1989-4007. ; 2:2, s. 161-182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study aimed to gain insight into the effect of mobile phone quality on voice identification using an ecologically realistic design. A total of 165 participants were exposed to an unfamiliar voice, either directly recorded or mobile phone recorded, for 40 seconds. After a two week delay, they were asked to identify the target-voice in a 7 voice target-present line-up. We used a between- subjects design, where half of the subjects were exposed to a directly recorded line-up, and the other half to a mobile phone recorded line-up. Data analysis did not show any significant effect of presentation format or line-up format. These results suggest that the detrimental effect on voice recognition suggested by the poorer sound quality of mobile phone recordings is minimal. They also indicate that there is no benefit from conducting a mobile phone recorded line-up, if the voice is originally heard over a mobile phone. More research is needed, however, before definitive conclusions may be drawn. The overall accuracy for correct identifications was 12.7% which is expected by chance. Further, one particular foil attracted 54% of all false identifications. Future research should focus on explaining why earwitnesses perform so poorly and develop methods to improve identification accuracy.

  • Three Tumor Patients with Total Maxillectomy Rehabilitated with Implant-Supported Frameworks and Maxillary Obturators: A Follow-Up Report
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research. - : Wiley. - 1708-8208 .- 1523-0899. ; 12:4, s. 315-323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Few reports are available on treatment using implant-supported frameworks with maxillary obturators after total maxillectomy on tumor patients. Purpose: To describe, evaluate, and report the clinical and radiographic performance of implant-supported frameworks and maxillary obturators after maxillectomy during the first years of function. Materials and Methods: Three patients with cancer in the maxillary region treated by total maxillectomy were rehabilitated. Seventeen dental and two craniofacial implants were installed, and the patients each received implant-supported, screw-retained, three-unit frameworks with a U-shaped bar and obturators retained by four magnetic attachments. Clinical and radiographic data were collected up to 7 years of follow-up. Results: The frequency of complications was low. Two craniofacial implants and one dental implant were loose and removed at abutment connection. No implants were lost after framework connection, and the mean marginal bone loss was small. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this report, dental implants are useful for rehabilitation of total maxillectomy patients, and a three-unit, screw-retained, implant-supported framework with maxillary obturator retained by magnetic attachment is a successful treatment concept for this patient group.

  • Socio-economic and lifestyle factors in relation to priority of dental care in a Swedish adolescent population.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Swedish dental journal. - 0347-9994. ; 34:2, s. 87-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this epidemiological survey was to describe and analyze oral health habits and life-style factors in relation to the priority of regular dental care in 19-year-old individuals with specific reference to gender, residential area and socio-economic grouping. The data were generated from a randomized sample of 758 (63%) individuals in three residential areas in Western Sweden (two rural, one urban) who answered a set of questionnaires prior to a dental examination. The analysis revealed that males had significantly less favourable oral health habits than females. Forty-one % of the males and 30% of the females did not plan regular dental visits after the age of 20 when they will be charged for the care (p = 0.002). There were no statistically significant differences in oral health habits and dental care priorities with regard to residential areas and socio-economic groups. In a multivariate model, three significant factors for the probability of "not planning for future regular dental visits" were identified: toothbrushing less than twice daily (OR 1.94; 95% CI 1.28-2.94), smoking (OR 1.68; 95% CI 1.10-2.56) and male gender (OR 1.54; 95% CI 1.05-2.24). The findings emphasize the need for promotion of favourable oral health habits and smoking prevention among adolescents. There is also a need for dental personnel to recognize differences with regard to oral health-related attitudes and behaviours between males and females.

  • Specific Copy Number Alterations Associated with Docetaxel/Carboplatin Response in Ovarian Carcinomas
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Anticancer Research. - : Highwire Press. - 0250-7005 .- 1791-7530. ; 30:11, s. 4451-4458
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The continued high recurrence and mortality rate in ovarian cancer is a significant problem and the major obstacle in the treatment of ovarian cancer patients is chemotherapy resistance. Thus, finding predictive markers of chemoresistance and elucidating resistance mechanisms is crucial for individualising treatment and improving survival of ovarian cancer patients. Materials and Methods: Using array comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH), this pilot study analysed the tumour genomes of patients treated with docetaxel/carboplatin as first-line chemotherapy (6 resistant versus 24 sensitive cases). This is the first array CGH study of  such  material.  Results:  The  study  identified  genetic alterations specific to chemoresistant (gains in 9p13.2-13.1, 9q21.2-21.32,  9q21.33,  9q22.2-22.31,  9q22.32-22.33  and 9q33.1-34.11) and chemosensitive (losses in 8p23.3-23.1 and 8p22) disease. Additionally, when comparing the results to previously analysed tumour material from patients treated with paclitaxel/carboplatin, the two datasets identified different genetic  alteration  profiles.  Conclusion:  Specific  genetic alterations were identified and associated with chemotherapy response in ovarian cancer. It will be interesting to investigate these exciting data further in larger independent series of ovarian   tumours,   and   hopefully   will   contribute   to   the establishment of predictive markers.

  • Edentulism associated with obesity: a study of four national surveys of 16 416 Swedes aged 55-84 years.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Acta odontologica Scandinavica. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-3850 .- 0001-6357. ; 68:6, s. 360-367
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Objective. To investigate the association between edentulism and obesity in the Swedish population aged 55-84 years over a 22-year period as a result of changes in health and socio-economic factors. Material and methods. Subjects aged 55-84 years (n = 16 416) were randomly sampled from the Swedish population by Statistics Sweden on four occasions (1980-81, 1988-89, 1996-97 and 2002). Trained interviewers collected information about dental status and anthropometric, demographic, socio-economic, lifestyle and health-related factors. Statistical analyses were based on logistic regression models. Results. Edentulism decreased from 43% to 14% in the age group 55-84 years from 1980 to 2002, and the proportion of subjects with removable dentures decreased from 68% to 33%. In the age group 55-74 years, the proportion of subjects with low education decreased from 60% to 28%, and the proportion of obese subjects (body mass index ≥30 kg/m(2)) increased from 9% to 15%. In women aged 55-74 years, the association between obesity and edentulism, adjusted for health, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors, was significant in all surveys, and the odds ratio for obesity changed from 1.64 (95% confidence interval 1.18-2.27) in 1980 to 3.17 (95% confidence interval 1.69-6.18) in 2002. In men, the association was weaker and was significant only in the sample that combined all surveys and included individuals aged 55-84 years. Conclusion. The study indicated an association between edentulism and obesity, which was most obvious in women aged 55-74 years.
