  • Disparities in mental health among adolescents with and without impairments
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health. - : SAGE Publications. - 1403-4948 .- 1651-1905. ; 43:7, s. 728-735
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To analyse whether there are differences in mental health among adolescents with and without various kinds of impairments, taking into account the number of impairments and gender. Methods: Data from the study Life & Health - Young People conducted in a Swedish county in 2011 was used. The survey included all students in grades 7 (13-14 years) and 9 (15-16 years) in compulsory school and grade 2 (17-18 years) in upper secondary school; there were 7793 respondents (81.0%). The students answered a questionnaire anonymously during school hours. Various measures of mental health were assessed in the groups: hard of hearing, visual impairment, motor impairment, difficulties in reading/writing/dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactive disorder/attention deficit disorder, other impairment, no impairment. Results: Of the studied impairments, difficulties in reading/writing/dyslexia are the most common (6.3%), followed by hard of hearing (5.4%). To have at least one impairment is more common among boys (18.2%) than girls (15.4%). In the impairment group, 21.5% have multiple impairments. Adolescents with impairments have worse mental health than those without, and those with multiple impairments have particularly higher odds ratio to have worse mental health. There are also differences in mental health between number and various kinds of impairments and between girls and boys. Conclusion: Adolescents with impairments, particularly girls and those with multiple impairments, have considerably worse mental health than others. These inequalities in health are an immense challenge, not only for those directly involved with the impaired: they affect everyone involved with the goal health equity for the whole population.

  • Shifting perspectives : Learning from or knowing with personal data?
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Is personal data gathered through body monitoring devices the learning resource it is said to be by its proponents?  If so, are the provided statistics and notifications the “reflective devices” they are meant to be? This presentation will show how people physically get in touch (with their fingers) with their data through touch-screen interfaces in the apps and how these re-enactments are claimed by the users to be “meaningful” when they connect with already existing embodied knowing from participating in the situations registered by the app. These findings suggest that there might be reasons to re-think the cognitive-based epistemological claims to knowledge that flows through talk about learning by reflecting on personal data. It also urges us to consider the implications of bringing in non-representational dimensions of knowing to the fore when discussing the pedagogical impact of personal digital data in everyday lives.

  • SiC-MOSFET and Si-IGBT-Based dc-dc Interleaved Converters for EV Chargers : Approach for Efficiency Comparison with Minimum Switching Losses Based on Complete Parasitic Modeling
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI. - 1996-1073. ; 13:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Widespread dissemination of electric mobility is highly dependent on the power converters, storage systems and renewable energy sources. The efficiency and reliability, combined with the emerging and innovative technologies, are crucial when speaking of power converters. In this paper the interleaved dc-dc topology has been considered for EV charging, due to its improved reliability. The efficiency comparison of the SiC-MOSFET and Si-IGBT-based converters has been done on wide range of switching frequency and output inductances. The interleaved converters were considered with the optimal switching parameters resulting from the analysis done on a detailed parasitic circuit model, ensuring minimum losses and maintaining the safe operating area. The analysis included the comparison of different inductors, and for the selected ones the complete system efficiency and cost were conducted. The results indicate the benefits when SiC-MOSFETs are applied to the interleaved dc-dc topology for wide ranges of output inductances and switching frequencies, and most importantly, they offer lower total volume but also total cost. The realistic and dynamic models of power devices obtained from the manufacturer's experimental tests have been considered in both LTspice and PLECS simulation tools.

  • Temporal variations of manganese in the haemolymph and tissues of the Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus (L.)
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Aquatic Toxicology. - 0166-445X. ; 48:2-3, s. 297-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, lives on sediments rich in manganese (Mn) and any dissolved Mn2+ can readily be taken up by the animal. To investigate temporal fluctuations of bioavailable Mn, a N. norvegicus fishing ground on the Swedish west coast was repeatedly sampled every 2 months from September 1992 to November 1994. The lobsters collected contained on average 91.7 mu g Mn g(-1) dry wt. (S.E. 4.2, n = 156). The oxygen saturation of the bottom water proved to be negatively correlated with both the temperature of the water and the Mn (concentration and total content) of the animal's haemolymph. The temporal fluctuations in animal Mn load were however, small compared to spatial differences found in an earlier study. There was an increase in the Mn concentration of the lobster exoskeleton (from 56 to 340 mu g Mn g(-1) dry wt, exoskeleton) and gills (from 34 to 160 mu g Mn g(-1) dry wt. gill) in postmoult animals compared to premoult. The Mn concentrations of the lobsters' hepatopancreas and muscle tissue remained relatively constant throughout the moult cycle and appear to be more conservative in their Mn concentration and less affected by exposure to Mn. • Reduced breast cancer mortality after 20+years of follow-up in the Swedish randomized controlled mammography trials in Malmo, Stockholm, and Goteborg
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medical Screening. - : SAGE Publications. - 0969-1413 .- 1475-5793. ; 24:1, s. 34-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To analyze the age- and trial-specific effects of the breast cancer screening trials with mammography in Malmo , Stockholm, and Goteborg. Methods: The original trial files were linked to the Swedish Cancer and Cause of Death Registers to obtain date of breast cancer diagnosis and date and cause of death. Relative risks and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using the evaluation model (only breast cancers diagnosed between date of randomization and date when the first screening round of the control group was completed were included in the analysis). Results: Women aged 40-70 at randomization in the Malmo I and II, Stockholm, and Goteborg trials were followed-up for an average of 30, 22, 25, and 24 years, respectively. The overview of all trials resulted in a significant decrease of 15% in breast cancer mortality. The variation by consecutive 10-year age group at randomization was small-from 21% in the age group 40-49 to 11% in the age group 50-59. After adjustment for age, there was a significant reduction in breast cancer mortality in the Goteborg trial (26%), and a non-significant reduction in the Malmo I and II and Stockholm trials (12%, 15%, and 5.8%, respectively). Conclusions: The overview showed a 15% significant relative reduction in breast cancer mortality due to invitation to mammography screening. Heterogeneity in age, trial time, attendance rates, and length of screening intervals may have contributed to the variation in effect between the trials.

  • The Visual Perception of Biological Motion in Adults
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Modelling Human Motion. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030467319 - 9783030467326 ; , s. 53-71
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter presents research about the roles of different levels of visual processing and motor control on our ability to perceive biological motion produced by humans and by robots. The levels of visual processing addressed include high-level semantic processing of action prototypes based on global features as well as lower-level local processing based on kinematic features. A further important aspect concerns the interaction between these two levels of processing and the interaction between our own movement patterns and their impact on our visual perception of biological motion. The authors’ results from their research describe the conditions under which semantic and kinematic features influence one another in our understanding of human actions. In addition, results are presented to illustrate the claim that motor control and different levels of the visual perception of biological motion have clear consequences for human–robot interaction. Understanding the movement of robots is greatly facilitated by the movement that is consistent with the psychophysical constraints of Fitts’ law, minimum jerk and the two-thirds power law.

  • Census of binaries - The big picture
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Space Agency, (Special Publication) ESA SP. - 1609-042X .- 0379-6566. ; 576, s. 97-104
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gaia will observe huge numbers of binaries with a large range of periods. The present contribution tries to present some estimates of the expected number of detections and/or orbit determinations, based on simplified but large-scale simulations. The simulations have to model both a Galaxy with binaries, the instrument and observations, and the reduction programs. As in previous studies, there are marked distance-effects, with the solar neighbourhood (within a few hundred pc) much more completely sampled than more typical (few kpc) Gaia distances. The large number of simulated solutions allows also a study of some systematic effects in the astrometry of undetected binaries.
