  • Automated identification and classification of single particle serial femtosecond X-ray diffraction data
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 22:3, s. 2497-2510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first hard X-ray laser, the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), produces 120 shots per second. Particles injected into the X-ray beam are hit randomly and in unknown orientations by the extremely intense X-ray pulses, where the femtosecond-duration X-ray pulses diffract from the sample before the particle structure is significantly changed even though the sample is ultimately destroyed by the deposited X-ray energy. Single particle X-ray diffraction experiments generate data at the FEL repetition rate, resulting in more than 400,000 detector readouts in an hour, the data stream during an experiment contains blank frames mixed with hits on single particles, clusters and contaminants. The diffraction signal is generally weak and it is superimposed on a low but continually fluctuating background signal, originating from photon noise in the beam line and electronic noise from the detector. Meanwhile, explosion of the sample creates fragments with a characteristic signature. Here, we describe methods based on rapid image analysis combined with ion Time-of-Flight (ToF) spectroscopy of the fragments to achieve an efficient, automated and unsupervised sorting of diffraction data. The studies described here form a basis for the development of real-time frame rejection methods, e. g. for the European XFEL, which is expected to produce 100 million pulses per hour. • Ultrafast, atto-Joule switch using fiber-optic parametric amplifier operated in saturation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 16:15, s. 10956-10961
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ll-optical manipulation of signals carried by lightwaves is attractive because controlling the light directly can be more efficient, allows a multitude of signal formats, and can also prove most cost effective. We implemented a novel scheme for ultrafast optical switching using very small control energy that relies on the use of a saturated fiber-optic parametric amplifier. Approximately 19 aJ (150 photons) of control pulse energy was needed for 50% extinction of the signal which is three to four orders of magnitude smaller than in other all-optical switching demonstrations. This allows the consideration of novel practical approaches to implement all-optical switching devices and all-optical subsystems for telecommunications and other applications.

  • An apodized SOI waveguide-to-fiber surface grating coupler for single lithography silicon photonics
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 19:4, s. 3592-3598
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a grating for coupling between a single mode silica fiber and the TE mode in a silicon photonic waveguide on a silicon on insulator (SOI) substrate. The grating is etched completely through the silicon device layer, thus permitting the fabrication of through-etched surface coupled silicon nanophotonic circuits in a single lithography step. Furthermore, the grating is apodized to match the diffracted wave to the mode profile of the fiber. We experimentally demonstrate a coupling efficiency of 35% with a 1 dB bandwidth of 47 nm at 1536 nm on a standard SOI substrate. Furthermore, we show by simulation that with an optimized buried oxide thickness, a coupling efficiency of 72% and a 1 dB bandwidth of 38 nm at 1550 nm is achievable. This is, to our knowledge, the highest simulated coupling efficiency for single-etch TE-mode grating couplers. In particular, simulations show that apodizing a conventional periodic through-etched grating decreases the back-reflection into the waveguide from 21% to 0.1%.

  • A simple model for the resonance shift of localized plasmons due to dielectric particle adhesion
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 20:1, s. 524-533
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrasensitive detectors based on localized surface plasmonresonance refractive index sensing are capable of detecting very lownumbers of molecules for biochemical analysis. It is well known that thesensitivity of such sensors crucially depend on the spatial distribution ofthe electromagnetic field around the metal surface. However, the preciseconnection between local field enhancement and resonance shift is seldomdiscussed. Using the quasistatic approximation, we developed a model thatrelates the sensitivity of a nanoplasmonic resonator to the local field inwhich the analyte is placed. The model, corroborated by finite-differencetime-domain simulations, may be used to estimate the magnitude of theshift as a function of the properties of the sensed object – permittivity andvolume – and its location on the surface of the resonator. It requires onlya computation of the resonant field induced by the metal structure and istherefore suitable for numerical optimization of nanoplasmonic sensors.

  • Plasmonic glasses: Optical properties of amorphous metal-dielectric composites
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : The Optical Society. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 22:2, s. 2032-2043
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plasmonic glasses composed of metallic inclusions in a host dielectric medium are investigated for their optical properties. Such structures characterized by short-range order can be easily fabricated using bottom-up, self-organization methods and may be utilized in a number of applications, thus, quantification of their properties is important. We show, using T-Matrix calculations of 1D, 2D, and 3D plasmonic glasses, that their plasmon resonance position oscillates as a function of the particle spacing yielding blue-and redshifts up to 0.3 eV in the visible range with respect to the single particle surface plasmon. Their properties are discussed in light of an analytical model of an average particle's polarizability that originates from a coupled dipole methodology.

  • Efficient light management in vertical nanowire arrays for photovoltaics
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 21:9, s. 558-575
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vertical arrays of direct band gap III-V semiconductor nanowires (NWs) hold the prospect of cheap and efficient next-generation photovoltaics, and guidelines for successful light-management are needed. Here, we use InP NWs as a model system and find, through electrodynamic modeling, general design principles for efficient absorption of sun light in nanowire arrays by systematically varying the nanowire diameter, the nanowire length, and the array period. Most importantly, we discover the existence of specific band-gap dependent diameters, 170 nm and 410 nm for InP, for which the absorption of sun light in the array is optimal, irrespective of the nanowire length. At these diameters, the individual InP NWs of the array absorb light strongly for photon energies just above the band gap energy due to a diameter-tunable nanophotonic resonance, which shows up also for other semiconductor materials of the NWs. Furthermore, we find that for maximized absorption of sun light, the optimal period of the array increases with nanowire length, since this decreases the insertion reflection losses. • Two-stage design method for realization of photonic bandgap structures with desired symmetries by interference lithography
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 12:6, s. 978-983
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interference lithography for the fabrication of photonic crystals is considered. A two-stage design method for realization of photonic bandgap structures with desired symmetries is developed. An optimal photonic crystal with a large bandgap is searched by adjusting some parameters while keeping some basic symmetry of the unit cell unchanged. A nonlinear programming method is then used to find the optimal electric field vectors of the laser beams and realize the desired interference pattern. The present method is useful for a rational and systematical design of new photonic bandgap structures.

  • Two phase-matching regimes in high-order harmonic generation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 31:20, s. 31687-31697
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-order harmonic generation (HHG) provides scalable sources of coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation with pulse duration down to the attosecond time scale. Efficient HHG requires the constructive interplay between microscopic and macroscopic effects in the generation volume, which can be achieved over a large range of experimental parameters from the driving field properties to those of the generating medium. Here, we present a systematic study of the harmonic yield as a function of gas pressure and medium length. Two regimes for optimum yield are identified, supporting the predictions of a recently proposed analytical model. Our observations are independent on the focusing geometry and, to a large extent, on the pulse duration and laser intensity, providing a versatile approach to HHG optimization.

  • Time-resolved protein nanocrystallography using an X-ray free-electron laser
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 20:3, s. 2706-2716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate the use of an X-ray free electron laser synchronized with an optical pump laser to obtain X-ray diffraction snapshots from the photoactivated states of large membrane protein complexes in the form of nanocrystals flowing in a liquid jet. Light-induced changes of Photosystem I-Ferredoxin co-crystals were observed at time delays of 5 to 10 µs after excitation. The result correlates with the microsecond kinetics of electron transfer from Photosystem I to ferredoxin. The undocking process that follows the electron transfer leads to large rearrangements in the crystals that will terminally lead to the disintegration of the crystals. We describe the experimental setup and obtain the first time-resolved femtosecond serial X-ray crystallography results from an irreversible photo-chemical reaction at the Linac Coherent Light Source. This technique opens the door to time-resolved structural studies of reaction dynamics in biological systems.

  • Comprehensive analysis of electrically-pumped GaSb-based VCSELs
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 19:18, s. 17267-17282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses several performance-related aspects of electrically-pumped GaSb-based buried tunnel junction VCSELs with an emission wavelength of 2.6 mu m based on theoretical and experimental results. These results allow a deeper insight into the internal device physics, such as radial diffusion of carriers, maximum continuous-wave operating temperature, diffraction loss, internal temperature, gain and loss parameters, internal quantum efficiency of the active region etc. These parameters can be taken into account while designing mid-infrared lasers which leads to an improved device performance. A simple thermal model of the devices based on the two-dimensional (2-D) finite element method using the material data from the literature is also presented. In addition, an application-based result utilizing these lasers for the measurement of absolute water vapor concentration by wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) method are also described, hinting that devices are well-suited for the targeted sensing applications.
