  • Stochastic Frontier Production Function With Errors-In-Variables
  • 1999
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper develops a procedure for estimating parameters of a cross-sectional stochastic frontier production function when the factors of production suffer from measurement errors. Specifically, we use Fuller's (1987) reliability ratio concept to develop an estimator for the model in Aigner et al (1977). Our Monte-Carlo simulation exercise illustrates the direction and the severity of bias in the estimates of the elasticity parameters and the returns to scale feature of the production function when using the traditional maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE) in presence of measurement errors. In contrast the reliability ratio based estimator consistently estimates these parameters even under extreme degree of measurement errors. Additionally, estimates of firm level technical efficiency are severely biased for traditional MLE compared to reliability ratio estimator, rendering inter-firm efficiency comparisons infeasible. The seriousness of measurement errors in a practical setting is demonstrated by using data for a cross-section of publicly traded U.S. corporations.

  • The Effects of Cutbacks in Swedish Sickness Benefits
  • 1997
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since 1990 sickness benefits have been reduced in Sweden. In this paper we use data from the labour force survey to study the introduction of a qualification day in 1993. Our main centre of interest is the distributional effects caused by this cutback, and to this end we analyse a large number of interactions between background variables and the reform dummy. Considerable attention is thus paid to variable subset selection in binary choice models. Our results show that sick leave incidence is greater for those with job security, but that this difference has decreased after the cutbacks.

  • MONETARY REGIMES AND ENDOGENOUS WAGE CONTRACTS: SWEDEN 1908-1995
  • 1998
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We examine Gray´s theory of endogenous length of wage contracts and inflation indexation, using a uniquely long data set of blue-collar worker collective agreements in Sweden 1908-1995. Volatile monetary regimes, i. e. regimes with large macroeconomic uncertainty, are associated with short length and inflation indexed contracts. We also find inertia in changes in contract characteristics to changes in the regime. The findings support the Lucas critique, but cautions against simple divisions of time series in different regimes wherein agents' decision rules are assumed constant.

  • Acquisition and Growth of Technology-Based Firms
  • 1996
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study reports the results of an empirical analysis of acquisitions and growth of small technology-based firms. Three issues are focused upon: (1) the importance of technology-based acquisitions among large Swedish companies; (2) the growth patterns of acquired and non-acquired small technology-based firms (STBFs);and (3) factors explaining the growth among STBFs. The results indicate that technology-based acquisitions are increasingly important for the sourcing of technology among large Swedish manufacturing companies. For the STBFs, growth was found to be higher among the acquired firms than among the non-acquired firms, both before and after the acquisition. In a regression, an acquisition was found to positively influence growth. Finally, among explanatory factors critical for post-acquisition growth are the fulfillment of the buyers' and sellers' motives along with the realization of technological synergies.

  • An Economic System of Technology-related Acquisitions and Spin-offs
  • 1996
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper argues that an economic system of large and small technology-based firms which interact through technology-related acquisitions and spin-offs can be highly conducive to overall innovativeness and growth. Based on Williamson's (1975) suggestion of a 'systems solution by classical specialisation', and the empirical research on Swedish technology-based firms reported by Lindholm (1994), an 'extended systems approach' is proposed and presented in this paper. This extended system includes the process by which firms spin off small technology-based firms (STBFs) for possible acquisition so that a market for technology-based firms is created as a supplement to other forms of technology markets.

  • The Proof of the Gibbard-Satterthwaite Theorem Revisited
  • 1999
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper provides three short and very simple proofs of the classical Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem. The theorem is first proved in the case with only two individuals in the economy. The many individual case follows then from an induction argument (over the number of individuals). The proof of the theorem is further simplified when the voting rule is assumed to be neutral
