The status of social and leisure time activities among elderly residing in Iran and Sweden

- Objective: Among social determinants of health, culture and ethnicity play a key role in defining the needs of different population groups. The aim of this study was to consider and compare the social and leisure time activities of the three .elderly groups: Iranian residing in Iran, Iranian residing in Sweden and Swedish residing in Sweden Methods and Materials: Via the cross-sectional design, 825 Iranian elderly who were living in Tehran compared with 305 Swedish elderly and 101 Iranian elderly living in Stockholm on social relations, group activities and leisure time activities. Only, elderly who could communicate properly entered the study. A structured questionnaire designed by the Iranian and Swedish Research Group on the” Assessment of Social Health Status and Needs” implemented for .the subjects. Estimation method and logistic regression used to analyze the gathered data Results: Subjects of all 3 groups were in the age range of 60-77 years old and mostly were married. Results showed despite very common characteristics, there are, also, many differences which can be explained by cultural and environmental factors. Rapid urbanization, limited resources and unawareness of or disregard for healthy life style resulted in lower levels of satisfaction with social and leisure life in the Iranian elderly. On the other hand, level of activities related to the spiritual dimension of health were more in Iranians than Swedish and the difference was significant (p=0.000), whereas the reverse was true for the group activities (p=0.000). Poor attitude toward physicalactivity and exercise in Iranian elderly, especially women, with consequent hazards for health, needs special consid.eration on behalf of the health planners and providers Conclusions: Needs assessment with trance- cultural approach, especially on social determinants of the health of elderly is a necessity. Using valid and reliable instruments, designed to overcome the cultural barriers would help.planners to apply the experience of the aged societies more reasonably, properly and creatively.

- This research deals with Anorexia nervosa disorder in the novel ʾIjāṣat Mīlā, that portrays the impact of modern-day materialism and its effect on the emerging and spreading of some disorders to such an extent that it has become a phenomenon needing investigation. Because of a number of social and materialistic factors, this disorder deeply affects young people, who easily fall under the influence of social media.This research examines both the background of the disorder and the suffering that the main character of the novel goes through. It further investigates the effects of social media platforms and fora on young people, together with the role of literature in portraying the damages caused by their usage. The novel is examined through critical cultural theory, which searches for the hidden cultural significance of the phenomenon. The result of the study shows that ʾIjāṣat Mīlā can be seen as a sphere, comprising all the social changes that communication technology causes in the new generations.

- تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى قراءة مجموعة منتخبة من قصصالأطفال المصورة وتحليله وفق منهج النقد البيئي، تتضمنالمجموعة عشرة نصوص قصصية بعنوان: سلسلة الحفاظ علىالبيئة، حيوانات في دوّامة الخطر، للكاتب غسان شبارو. اعتمدالبحث تطبيق الأسس النظرية التي افترضها الكاتب لورنس بيلل فيكتابه الخيال البيئي على النصوص القصصية المنتخبةتوصلت الدراسة إلى أن هذه السلسلة القصصية المختارة قد ركزت على موضوعات تتعلق بالمخاطر البيئة التي يتعرّض لها كوكب الأرض هذا اليوم،كمشاكل التلوث البيئي والاحتباسالحراري والصيد العشوائي والتمدد العمراني ورش المبيدات الحشريةوتلوث الجو بمخلفات السيارات وغازاتها وتلوث البحار والمحيطات سواء بسبب رمي النفايات أو بتسرّب النفط، وطرحتهافي شكل سردٍ مبسّط ضمن هيكل القصة المصورة للأطفال. وخلصالبحث إلى إمكانية تطبيق مبادئ النقد البيئي على هذه النصوصوإنّ لأدب الطف يُمكن أن يُسهم في بناء الجانب الثقافي للطفلبشكلٍ كبير وفي توعيته بمخاطر بيئته.

- يدرس هذا البحث مرض "فقدان الشهية العصبي" Anorexia nervosa في رواية: إجاصة ميلا، والعوامل المادية للعصر ودورها في ظهور بعض الأمراض وانتشارها وتضخمها لتصبح ظاهرة تقتضي الدراسة للكشف عن الخلفيات التي تحيط بهذا المرض، والمعاناة التي عانتها الشخصية الرئيسية المصابة به. أوجدت المرض ظروف مادية واجتماعية كان لها تأثير عميق في فئة الشباب الذين يقعون عادة تحت تأثير وسائل التواصل بسرعة كبيرة. سعى البحث إلى الإجابة عن الآثار التي يتركها استعمال تكنلوجيا التواصل في الجيل الجديد، ودور الأدب في الكشف عن الأضرار الناجمة عن هذه العلاقة الاستعمالية بأسلوب يعمق الأثر الإنساني في القارئ، من خلال منظور النقد الثقافي الذي يبحث عن الدلالة الثقافية المتخفية وراء المنظور.
