  • Till frågan om Mora ting : ett arkeologiskt perspektiv
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Fornvännen. - Stockholm : Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 0015-7813 .- 1404-9430. ; 116:3, s. 205-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phenomenon of the medieval royal election thing of Mora, on the outskirts of Uppsala in central Sweden, is an under-researched topic from an archaeological viewpoint. With the archaeological material in focus, the author reviews the current state of research and offers a new hypothesis about the development of Mora as a non-continuous thing site with three phases: in the 500s, 1300s and1400s. It connects to long debated questions such as where in Mora the actual thing was located, why Mora was chosen to host this important ceremonial act, and how the semi-mythical “Stone of Mora” is to be understood.

  • Children aboard the 17th c. warship Kronan? Four non-adult hip bones found among the skeletal remains
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Fornvännen. - Solna : Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 0015-7813 .- 1404-9430. ; 115:4, s. 285-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Britain, warships did not officially exclude women until the early 19th c. (Hacker 1981, p.657). The non-adult skeletons reported here indicate similar traditions in Sweden, as family members appear to have accompanied Swedish navy sailors and/or soldiers even aboard the large military ships of the 17th century.

  • Är Lojsta slott på Gotland fästet Gullborg som erövrades av Tyska orden 1404? : Marinarkeologiska svar på gammal frågeställning
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Fornvännen. - Stockholm : Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 0015-7813 .- 1404-9430. ; 118:3, s. 135-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • More than fifty years ago it was suggested that the stronghold of Lojsta slott in southern Gotland might be identical to a stronghold mentioned in a written source as Goltborch. The name has been translated as Gullborg and is probably one of the wooden castles erected by the troops of Queen Margaret of DenmarkNorway beginning in the winter of 1394/95. These were torn down in 1398, rebuilt in 1403, and finally conquered and destroyed by the Teutonic Order in 1404. As Lojsta slott has never been subject to archaeological excavation, the identification has remained an open question. This paper reports a recent underwater archaeological survey carried out in the waters around Lojsta slott, consisting of fieldwork that has included sampling for dendrochronological analysis. The dendrochronological results match the written sources very well and thus confirm the assumption that Lojsta slott is the stronghold of Gullborg mentioned in written sources. Moreover, the survey reveals that the underwater environment in the area has great archaeological potential.

  • Älvornas arkeologi
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fornvännen. - Stockholm : Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 0015-7813 .- 1404-9430. ; 113:4, s. 210-232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rock art research in Northern Europe has found few opportunities to highlight the creation and use of rock art through informed methods. Most rock art traditions seem to have ended thousands of years before any historical sources inform us about people’s life-worlds. The exception to this is ample post-Reformation sources that connect cup marks with elves: light fairy creatures who were easily disturbed and could cause sickness and ill fortune if they became annoyed. This paper highlights this body of belief through historical and oral sources and through archaeological evidence. I argue that Early Modern elf folklore may very well be based in older traditions which found new expressions through the Reformation and the Danish and Swedish state religion – Protestantism.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims mainly to analyse the relationship between university scholars andheritage conservation by means of two examples: Iron Age house types, which ishistory, and the analysis of planned Iron Age architecture, which has not yet benefitedsufficiently from contract archaeology. I recognise the duty of universityscholars to develop research topics that may be useful to contract archaeology aswell as to heritage conservation and university archaeology. As a topic of research,I suggest a cognitively based understanding of Iron Age house planning and construction.I suggest that an important understanding of cognitive history can berelated to a shift in Iron Age building principles: in the Early Iron Age form followsfunction, but in the Late Iron Age construction principles give form.
