  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Ethnos. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0014-1844 .- 1469-588X. ; 71:1, s. 21-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Animistic or 'relational' ontologies encountered in non-Western (i.e. premodern) settings pose a challenge to Western (i.e. modern) knowledge production, as they violate fundamentalassumptions of Cartesian science. Naturalscientists who have tried seriously to incorporate subject-subject relations into their intellectual practice (e.g. Uexküll, Bateson) have inexorably been relegated to the margins. Surrounded by philosophers and sociologists of science (e.g. Latour) announcing the end of Cartesian objectivism, however, late modern or 'post-modern' anthropologists discussing animistic understandings of nature will be excused for taking them more seriously than their predecessors. It is incumbent on them to analytically sort out what epistemological options there are, and to ask why pre-modern, modern, and post-modern people will tend to deal with culture/nature or subject/object hybridity in such different ways. Animism, fetishism, and objectivism can be understood as alternative responses to universal semiotic anxieties about where or how to draw boundaries between persons and things.

  • Artifacts have consequences, not agency: Toward a critical theory of global environmental history
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Social Theory. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-7137 .- 1368-4310. ; 20:1, s. 95-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article challenges the urge within Actor-Network Theory, posthumanism, and the ontological turn in sociology and anthropology to dissolve analytical distinctions between subject and object, society and nature, and human and non-human. It argues that only by acknowledging such distinctions and applying a realist ontology can exploitative and unsustainable global power relations be exposed. The predicament of the Anthropocene should not prompt us to abandon distinctions between society and nature but to refine the analytical framework through which we can distinguish between sentience and non-sentience and between the symbolic and non-symbolic. The incompatibility of posthumanist and Marxist approaches to the Anthropocene and the question of agency derives from ideological differences as well as different methodological proclivities. A central illustration of these differences is the understanding of fetishism, a concept viewed by posthumanists as condescending but by Marxists as emancipatory.

  • Beyond Prometheanism : Modern technologies as strategies for redistributing time and space
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environmental Values. - 0963-2719. ; 33:1, s. 28-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technologies developed since the late eighteenth century differ from earlier forms of technology by being as dependent on world market prices of labour, land and other biophysical resources as on human inventiveness. Yet, whether their outlook is mainstream or heterodox, modern people tend to view technology simply as ingenuity applied to nature, while oblivious of the extent to which it is contingent on the asymmetric exchange of resources in global society. Although inextricably entwined in the real world, the phenomena studied by economics and engineering are kept conceptually separate. This is achieved by disregarding the materiality of world trade. Modern technologies are not just instruments for solving problems but social strategies for redistributing time and space in world society, displacing work and environmental loads to sectors of the world system where wages are lower and environmental legislation less rigorous. Technology should not remain extraneous to social theory. A sociometabolic reconceptualisation of technology is particularly essential for critics of global capitalism.

  • Beyond the Image of COVID-19 as Nature's Revenge : Understanding Globalized Capitalism through an Epidemiology of Money
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 13:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Public discussion of the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic has reproduced several recurrent and interrelated topics in discourses on sustainability and the Anthropocene. First, there is an ambiguous concern—sometimes ominous, sometimes hopeful—that the pandemic will precipitate radical social transformation or even collapse. Second, there is widespread reflection over the risks of economic globalization, which increases vulnerability and undermines local food security. Third, the pandemic is frequently imagined as nature’s revenge on humankind. This metaphor reflects a fundamental conceptual dualism separating nature and society that continues to constrain our efforts to understand the challenges of sustainability. To help transcend the epistemological and ontological dichotomy of nature versus society, the article proposes an epidemiological approach to all-purpose money. Conventional money is an artifact with far-reaching repercussions for global society as well as the biosphere. To approach it as the source of behavioral algorithms with severely detrimental consequences for both social and ecological systems might provide a middle ground for natural and social science.

  • Are We All Spiritual?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal for the Study of Spirituality. - 2044-0243. ; 1:2, s. 249-268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 'I’m spiritual – not religious' has become a key expression of a new form of globalized religion focussing on a specific notion of spirituality, signifying a universal human essence, located deep inside each individual as a potential for wellbeing and personal transformation. The message is: Spirituality unites us into a single humanity, while religion, with its dogma and rituals, separates us. This new concept of spirituality works mostly in symbiosis with neoliberal ideas about the market, where neo-spiritual therapists and coaches offer to assist individuals in finding and developing their spirituality or 'inner potential'. In this article, I suggest that this contemporary view of spirituality is produced within a particular social context, and is thus not self-evidently adopted in other contexts. To illustrate this, I draw on my experience of fieldwork in Canadian Mi’kmaq reserves and examples of contemporary spirituality, mainly from Sweden; and consider whether Mi'kmaq notions of spirituality are congruent with those of the 'new spirituality'.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Svensk religionshistorisk årsskrift. - 0283-0302. ; 2007, s. 33-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  Sweden, which recently separated the church from the public sphere and is said to be one of the most secularized societies in the world, instead has allowed the public domain to be colonized by new, spiritualized practices. Not only business corporations, but also Swedish authorities purchase such courses and services for their employees. Sold as therapy, the services of new spiritual leaders offer anti-stress techniques to prevent burn-out, or leaders are trained to develop their leadership in coaching activities, often imbued with rhetoric from New Age spirituality. In this article I discuss two practices in contemporary Sweden, The Journey with leaders who present themselves as "authorized therapists- and Human Dynamics, which sells courses to Swedish public schools. These new practices, which in the 1970s would have been classified as New Age and restricted to the private domain, are trying and have partly succeeded to navigate into the public domain of Swedish society.
