- Contacts with the system world have been problematic for people who have suffered injuries in traffic. A retrospective study of 836 people injured in road accidents in Finland and Sweden shows striking difficulties in contacts with the authorities. Just over half of the injured people felt that they were badly treated by the authorities during and after the rehabilitation period. In Finland, however, the situation was better. Women experienced greater difficulty in their contacts with the authorities than the men did. The study also shows that the group of blue-collar workers in Finland and Sweden ran into more obstacles than other socioeconomic groups. People with functional disabilities have to a large extent felt alienation in relation to the handicap movement in both countries. The handicap movement has been of little significance in post-accident care and in later stages of life. Victims of traffic injuries should also be viewed as a new group of functionally disabled people who are marginalized on the labour market in both countries. To ease the situation for injured people in the future, it is suggested that officials in various authorities who work with handicap issues should exert themselves more than they have done hitherto to ensure greater sensitivity in their contacts with functionally disabled people. It would also be describle if the authorities could provide simpler and clearer information about rights and duties. It is probably also necessary to try to create more jobs for injured people after the rehabilitation is ended.
