  • The Anatomy and Biomechanics of Acute and Chronic Whiplash Injury
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Traffic Injury Prevention. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1538-957X .- 1538-9588. ; 10:2, s. 101-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whiplash injury is the most common motor vehicle injury, yet it is also one of the most poorly understood. Here we examine the evidence supporting an organic basis for acute and chronic whiplash injuries and review the anatomical sites within the neck that are potentially injured during these collisions. For each proposed anatomical site—facet joints, spinal ligaments, intervertebral discs, vertebral arteries, dorsal root ganglia, and neck muscles—we present the clinical evidence supporting that injury site, its relevant anatomy, the mechanism of and tolerance to injury, and the future research needed to determinewhether that site is responsible for some whiplash injuries. This article serves as a snapshot of the current state of whiplash biomechanics research and provides a roadmap for future research to better understand and ultimately prevent whiplash injuries.

  • Intersectionality and climate policy-making: The inclusion of social difference by three Swedish government agencies
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environment and Planning C: Politics and Space. - : SAGE Publications. - 2399-6544 .- 2399-6552. ; 40:1, s. 180-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change effects, views and approaches vary based on geographical location, class, gender, age and other climate related social factors. It is thus relevant to explore how various government bodies/authorities involved in dealing with climate change represent and act on social difference across diverse societies. This article performs a discourse analysis of climate policy documents from three Swedish government agencies: the Transport Administration, the Energy Agency, and the Environmental Protection Agency. This in order to explore how the different agencies represent social difference: what is made visible; what is obscured; what are the implications? We collected a purposive, collated sample of literature through online searches and personal communications with agency staff. We apply an intersectional approach to the sampled literature. The article finds that while each agency articulates an awareness of social difference, this tends to manifest in broad terms. It argues that this has the effect of obscuring differential climate impacts and effects of climate action, with potential environmental justice implications. Finally, the article concludes by proposing that incorporating intersectional approaches will support more effective, inclusive and equitable climate action, in Sweden and elsewhere.

  • ‘It’s always on’. Rituals and social structure within an international touch rugby team
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Sport in Society. - 1743-0437 .- 1743-0445.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates the processes of group formation. Utilising a ritual framework, it looks at how the Sweden Touch (rugby) team formed and bonded together to compete in the 2022 European Championships. Based on autoethnographic data, I focus on the role of rituals in bonding players as a group within Team Sweden and with the wider Touch community, contributing to creation of the space within which matches took place. This space is analysed with Mary Douglas-derived theory of sociocultural viability. Utilising the theory’s typology of social solidarities, I track the changing forms of social relations within the groups. I argue that the player-group was initially structured as an individualist network, which morphed into a hierarchical group through the actions of participants. Subsequently, an alternative egalitarian social organisation manifested among players, at times contesting the dominant social orderings. These changes are observable in the ritual activities of the player group.

  • The importance of workplace social relations in the return to workprocess : A missing piece in the return-to-work puzzle?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Handbook of return to work. - New York : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. - 9781489976260 - 9781489976277 ; , s. 81-97
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The chapter elaborates how workplace social relations influence practice in the return to work process. The social conditions in which the return to work process is embedded, and the way social interaction and relations between the sick-listed worker and other workplace actors (supervisor and coworkers) evolve, have only been researched to a limited extent. In this book chapter, we will discuss critical new dimensions of social relations research in the field of return to work that can “make” or “break” a workplace return to work process. These critical new dimensions highlight the importance of viewing return to work as a dynamic process over time, where supervisors and coworkers display shifting roles depending on phases of the process. The chapter conveys new dimensions of social relations, acknowledging the positive contribution of coworker efforts in the process, which may have an important impact on workplace-based return to work interventions.

  • Soil microbiomes drive aboveground plant–pathogen–insect interactions
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Oikos. - : Wiley. - 0030-1299 .- 1600-0706. ; 2022:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plants interact with a large diversity of microbes and insects, both below and above ground. While studies have shown that belowground microbes affect the performance of plants and aboveground organisms, we lack insights into how belowground microbial communities may shape interactions between aboveground pathogens and insects. We investigated how soil microbiomes and aboveground organisms affect plant growth and development, and whether differences in soil microbiomes influence interactions between aboveground organisms. We conducted a growth-chamber experiment with oak seedlings Quercus robur growing in three soils with similar abiotic soil properties but with distinct natural soil microbiomes. Seedlings were subjected to single or dual attack by powdery mildew Erysiphe alphitoides and aphids Tuberculatus annulatus, either in the presence or absence of prior attack by a free-feeding caterpillar Phalera bucephala. Soil microbiomes were associated with differences in seedling height, and seedlings with multiple aboveground organisms had more but smaller leaves than healthy seedlings. The soil microbiome affected the severity of powdery mildew infection, and mediated the impact of co-occurring aboveground organisms on aphid population size. Our study highlights that plant performance is affected by natural soil microbiomes as well as aboveground organisms, and that natural soil microbiomes can affect interactions between pathogens and insects. These findings are important to understand species interactions in natural systems, as well as for practical applications, such as manipulation of soil microbiomes to manage agricultural pests and diseases.

  • Airline Economics in Europe
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In recent years, the European air transport industry has seen a number of important changes, with more on the horizon. This comprehensive work presents a multi-faceted analysis of the air industry in Europe, how it has developed in recent years, and how it is set to develop further into the future. The work brings together leading experts in the field from across the continent to address the burning issues affecting this significant sector of the European transportation arena. It begins with a scene-setting contribution that outlines the detail of the regulatory context within which the European airline sector operates. We then move on to look at some of the strategic responses to this evolving regulatory context. In this respect, the specifics of some relevant business models, the competitive context (particularly with respect to pricing and profitability), changes in the productivity of European airlines relative to the global industry and the issue of joint ventures in the transatlantic market are all dealt with in some detail. The focus then shifts to the analysis of more niche sectors within the European aviation sector, specifically the business aviation and air cargo markets. The volume finishes with more specific works which address key issues in today’s European airline market, namely the adoption of new propulsion technology and the ever-present environmental impacts associated with aircraft noise.

  • Influence of manganese on the bulk properties of Fe-Cr-Mn alloys : a first-principles study
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : IOP Publishing. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; 89:12, s. 125702-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the effect of manganese on lattice stability and magnetic moments of paramagnetic Fe-Cr-Mn steel alloys along the Bain path connecting the body-centered cubic (bcc) and face-centered cubic (fcc) structures. The calculations are carried out using the ab initio exact muffin-tin orbital method, in combination with the coherent potential approximation, and the paramagnetic phase is modeled by the disordered local magnetic moment scheme. For all Fe-Cr-Mn alloys considered here, the local magnetic moments on Fe atoms have the minimum values for the fcc structure and the maximum values for the bcc structure, whereas the local magnetic moments on Mn have almost the same value along the constant-volume Bain path. Our results show that Mn addition to paramagnetic Fe-Cr solid solution stabilizes the bcc structure. However, when considering the paramagnetic fcc phase relative to the ferromagnetic bcc ground state, then Mn turns out to be a clear fcc stabilizer, in line with observations.

  • Phase stability and elastic properties of NbMoTaWMx (M = Al, V, Zr, Tc, Re and Ir) RHEAs: A first-principles assessment
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physica. B, Condensed matter. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0921-4526 .- 1873-2135. ; 687
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the exact muffin-tin orbital (EMTO) method in combination with the coherent potential approximation (CPA), we studied the influence of alloying elements Al, V, Zr, Tc, Re and Ir on the phase stability, lattice parameters, densities, and elastic properties of NbMoTaWMx (M = Al, V, Zr, Tc, Re, Ir; 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) refractory high entropy alloys. The predicted lattice parameter and elastic parameters agree with the available experimental and theoretical data. We calculated the atomic size difference (δ), the valence electron concentration (VEC) and the total energy of face-centered cubic (fcc), body-centered cubic (bcc) and hexagonal closed-pack (hcp) structures. We found that all studied NbMoTaWMx (M = Al, V, Zr, Tc, Re, Ir; 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) systems have the bcc structure. We showed that Al and Ir decrease the stability of the bcc structure and Zr significantly enlarges the lattice parameter of the host. Vanadium increases the ductility of NbMoTaW system. On the other hand, Al and Ir have strongly non-linear effect on the ductility, with clear minimum at x = 0.55. The present results provide consistent theoretical data and call for experimental investigation for these alloys.
