  • A content analysis of environmentally sustainable logistics - A complexity outlook
  • 2010
  • In: Ptoceedings of the 22nd Annual NOFOMA Conference : Logistics and Supply Chain Management in a Globalised Economy - Logistics and Supply Chain Management in a Globalised Economy.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose of this paper The purpose of this article is to explore themes and challenges in making logistics environmentally sustainable with a complexity theoretical perspective. Design/methodology/approach The research is explorative and based on a cross-sectional design focusing on different entities of supply chains. The study set out with a systematic review and content analysis of articles in top-ranking related journals from logistics, transportation, sustainability and environmental areas. Findings The findings show that there is a great gap between the sustainable logistics challenges, and the models and frameworks for approaching and handle these. While the vast majority of models and solutions are based on reductionistic principles and simplified views on reality, the results indicate that obstacles in developing logistics in an environmental-friendly way are both complicated and complex as it involves paradoxes, contradictions and system-wide effects. Research limitations/implications (if applicable) Sustainability in this article is mainly related to environmental issues. Analysis of complex interactions between complex environmental pillar with complex social and economic pillars could provide opportunities for future research. Practical implications (if applicable) The offered results in this paper provides a systematic structure for classifying issues related to logistics sustainability, something that will be beneficial for managers and policy-makers when approaching sustainable logistics challenges. What is original/value of paper Identification, classification and analysis of current problems and challenges of environmental sustainability of logistics are new. This paper also presents a thorough summary of previous approaches and studies of sustainable logistics.

  • Developing general guidelines and tools for documenting merits from external engagement - A practical approach
  • 2022
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Swedish higher education sector is in a phase in which the importance of external engagement for quality in research and education at universities has gradually become clearer. This development is also visible at European as well as global level. It is therefore relevant to assess and value the work that takes place at universities within the framework of external engagement and to support a diversification of academic competencies and careers. The work presented has to a large extent taken place within the national project “MerSam-Meritvärde av samverkansskicklighet” (https://www.hb.se/en/collaboration/mersam/ ) involving 14 Swedish universities, during 2019-2020. The overall objective of the project has been to develop knowledge, policy and practice for assessment of merits from external engagement with the long-term objective to develop a common understanding and framework on a national level. The project method has been exploratory combining both individual and organisational perspectives in order to develop good practice and to stimulate a national dialogue on the need of a more structured and harmonised approach when assessing merits from external engagement. One of the project objectives was to develop and piloting a practical guide for academic staff on how to document and assess merits from external engagement using a flexible yet a systematic and structured approach. The guide includes tools that supports the identification of a diverse set of competencies related to external engagement, dissemination, innovation in relation to the task of collaboration as stated in the Swedish Higher Education Act as well as activities in research and education. Any national initiative needs however to harmonise with a global academic context. The guidelines and tools developed in this work are anticipated to be in line with and relevant for initiatives taking place within open science on the international arena.

  • Dislocation Generation from Grain Boundaries in Nanosized Cu-beams
  • 2019
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • As the dimensions of a structure are decreased towards the nanometer scale, the mechanical response to loading deviates from what is observed macroscopically. This is due to a change in material properties stemming from the relative increase in number of surface atoms as compared to bulk atoms. Surface atoms lack some of their neighboring atoms, leading to a reorganization of the electron clouds and, thereby, to energy states differing from those of bulk atoms. Also at a grain boundary the atomic lattice is disturbed, and bonds between atoms in regions of different lattice orientations must be formed. The energy states of atoms close to such a disorder differ from the states for bulk atoms. All disturbed atomic regions are prone to dislocation interactions under mechanical loading. This should be especially true in the vicinity of both a surface and a grain boundary. Here we investigate tensile loading of nanosized Cu-beams, of length 100a0, with a0 denoting the lattice parameter, and with square cross sections with side length between 6a0 and 48a0 by molecular dynamic simulation. A grain boundary, normal to the loading direction, is introduced at the center of the beam to create two grains. The grain boundaries investigated are between the lattice orientations [100], [110] and [111], i.e. in all three combinations. Under loading dislocations are generated from the grain boundaries and extend into the weakest of the two grains. No dislocations pass a grain boundary or extend into both grains. It is also found that the yield stress decreases in the presence of a grain boundary as compared to a single grain beam. The stress-stain curves themselves are ragged and a correlation between the development of the dislocation density and the raggedness is observed.
