  • Young adults' views on dental care : a qualitative analysis
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 10:4, s. 197-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to determine young adults' views on dental care. The gathered data were gleaned from interviews and analysed in accordance with comparative method. It was possible to discern the views from two perspectives: the patients' opinions regarding costs in relation to given functions within dental care, and the attitudes to given functions in dental care per se. Costs for information and service were deemed questionable, whereas the costs for examination and treatment were accepted. The patients' stance was active with respect to information and treatment, whereas a greater degree of passivity prevailed within the areas of examination and service. According to this report, maintaining cheap dental care rates was deemed important. The patients questioned having to pay for information perceived as irrelevant to dental care. They expressed a hidden wish to assume an active role while being given more information, and to exercise greater influence with reference to own dental care, but were not in the habit of stating their views to dental staff. Thus, continuous patient satisfaction studies are vital in order to meet this group's needs. One suggestion for further research is to study how young adults regard dental care based on the theory presented.

  • Physical and psychosocial work related risk factors associated with musculoskeletal symptoms among home care personnel
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of caring sciences. - 0283-9318. ; 12:2, s. 104-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate physical and psychosocial aspects of the work environment, sociodemographic data and certain lifestyle factors, and the relationship between these variables and complaints in the shoulder/neck and low back area among female home care personnel. A questionnaire was completed by 361 randomly selected women. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the importance of several exposure factors for complaints in the shoulder/neck and low back areas. The results of this study clearly indicate that 'standing in forward-bent and twisted postures' can be viewed as a risk factor for shoulder/neck pain. A combination of this physical exposure and 'no possibility of influencing the planning of work' gave an increase in odds ratio, indicating an interaction between these two exposure indices. However, this interaction was not found for low back pain. 'Standing in forward-bent and twisted postures', 'standing in awkward positions' and whether the subject had children staying at home were significantly correlated to complaints about the low back. In fact, the latter factor decreased the risk of having complaints. The results indicated that certain physical and psychosocial work risk factors could influence shoulder/neck and low back pain.

  • A comparative study of perceptions of British mental health nurses and psychiatrists of their work environment
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing. - : Wiley. - 0309-2402 .- 1365-2648. ; 29, s. 36-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This comparative study of the perceptions of mental health nurses and psychiatrists about aspects of their work environment was undertaken in the West Midlands in England. The aim of the study was to ascertain the extent to which the environment in which mental health professionals' work impacts on their own mental and physical well-being. Seventy-four psychiatrists and 301 mental health nurses responded to a postal questionnaire. Analysis of data indicated that significant differences exist between nurses and psychiatrists in their working conditions, their physical working environment, their sources of support with a work-related problem, and the effects of their work on their own mental and physical health. The main recommendation derived from this study was to improve communication between mental health professionals and their managers by giving more structured feedback and guidance about one's work performance. This may help to alleviate the mental strain many mental health professionals experience in their work.

  • Assessment of the Maximum Waiting time Guarantee for Cataract Surgery : The Case of a Swedish Policy
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Assessment in Health Care. - : Cambridge U.P.. - 0266-4623 .- 1471-6348. ; 14:1, s. 180-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cataract is the most common reason for visual problems in old age. The introduction of intraocular lens (IOL) implantation revolutionized cataract surgery. Since the IOL technique was established in Sweden in the early 1980s, the demand for surgery has been increasing, leading to lengthy waiting lists. To shorten some of the most troublesome waiting lists, national and local governments (county councils) in Sweden introduced a maximum waiting time guarantee in 1992. The assessment of the guarantee made in this article shows that ophthalmic surgery units vary in their adoption of the guarantee, leading to different levels of goal achievement in waiting times for their patients. The less successful units could be divided into two groups: one where the units have a low operation rate, and one where the units chose not to follow the recommendations in priority setting made in the guarantee.
