Double parton interactions in gamma+3 jet events in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV

- We have used a sample of gamma + 3 jets events collected by the D0 experiment with an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb(-1) to determine the fraction of events with double parton scattering (f(DP)) in a single p (p) over bar collision at root s = 1.96 TeV. The DP fraction and effective cross section (sigma(eff)), a process-independent scale parameter related to the parton density inside the nucleon, are measured in three intervals of the second (ordered in p(T)) jet transverse momentum p(T)(jet2) within the range 15 <= p(T)(jet2) <= 30 GeV. In this range, f(DP) varies between 0.23 <= f(DP) <= 0.47, while sigma(eff) has the average value sigma(ave)(eff) = 16.4 +/- 0.3(stat) +/- 2.3(syst) mb.

Measurement of the inclusive t(t)over-bar production cross section in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV and determination of the top quark pole mass

- The inclusive cross section of top quark-antiquark pairs produced in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV is measured in the lepton + jets and dilepton decay channels. The data sample corresponds to 9.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Employing multivariate analysis techniques we measure the cross section in the two decay channels and we perform a combined cross section measurement. For a top quark mass of 172.5 GeV, we measure a combined inclusive top quark-antiquark pair production cross section of sigma(t<(t)over bar) = 7.26 +/- 0.13(stat)(-0.50)(+0.57) (syst) pb which is consistent with standard model predictions. We also perform a likelihood fit to the measured and predicted top quark mass dependence of the inclusive cross section, which yields a measurement of the pole mass of the top quark. The extracted value is m(t) = 172.8 +/- 1.1(theo)(-3.1)(+3.3) (exp) GeV.

- We present a measurement of the ratio of multijet cross sections in p (p) over barp collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measurement is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 fb(-1) collected with the DO detector. The ratio of the inclusive three-jet to two-jet cross sections, R-3/2, has been measured as a function of the jet transverse momenta. The data are compared to QCD predictions in different approximations. Popular tunes of the PYriiiA event generator do not agree with the data, while SHERPA provides a reasonable description of the data. A perturbative QCD prediction in next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant, corrected for non-perturbative effects, gives a good description of the data.

- We present a measurement of the shape of the Z/gamma* boson transverse momentum (q(T)) distribution in p (p) over bar -> Z/gamma(*)-> e(+)e(-)+X events at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 0.98 fb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data are found to be consistent with the resummation prediction at low q(T), but above the perturbative QCD calculation in the region of q(T)> 30 GeV/c. Using events with q(T)< 30 GeV/c, we extract the value of g(2), one of the nonperturbative parameters for the resummation calculation. Data at large boson rapidity y are compared with the prediction of resummation and with alternative models that employ a resummed form factor with modifications in the small Bjorken x region of the proton wave function.

Precise Measurement of the Top Quark Mass in the Dilepton Channel at D0

- We measure the top quark mass (m(t)) in p (p) over bar collisions at a center of mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV using dilepton t (t) over bar -> W(+)bW(-)b(-) -> l(+)nu(l)bl(-)(nu) over bar (l)(b) over bar events, where l denotes an electron, a muon, or a tau that decays leptonically. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb(-1) collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We obtain m(t) = 174.0 +/- 1.8(stat) +/- 2.4(syst) GeV, which is in agreement with the current world average m(t) = 173.3 +/- 1.1 GeV. This is currently the most precise measurement of mt in the dilepton channel.

- We report on a search for the pair production of second generation scalar leptoquarks (LQ) in p (p) over bar collisions at the center of mass energy root s- = 1.96 TeV using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) collected with the D empty set experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Topologies arising from the LQ (LQ) over bar -> mu q nu q and LQ (LQ) over bar -> mu q mu q decay modes are investigated. No excess of data over the standard model prediction is observed and upper limits on the leptoquark pair production cross section are derived at the 95% C.L. as a function of the leptoquark mass and the branching fraction beta for the decay LQ -> mu q. These are interpreted as lower limits on the leptoquark mass as a function of beta. For beta = 1 (0.5), scalar second generation leptoquarks with masses up to 316 GeV (270 GeV) are excluded.

- We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the s-channel and t-channel using neural networks for signal-background separation. We have analyzed 230 pb(-1) of data collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV and find no evidence for a single top quark signal. The resulting 95% confidence level upper limits on the single top quark production cross sections are 6.4 pb in the s-channel and 5.0 ph in the t-channel.

- We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson (H) in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV in events containing a charged lepton (l), missing transverse energy, and at least two jets, using 5.4 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. This analysis is sensitive primarily to Higgs bosons produced through the fusion of two gluons or two electroweak bosons, with subsequent decay H -> WW -> lvq'(q) over bar, where l is an electron or muon. The search is also sensitive to contributions from other production channels, such as WH -> lvb (b) over bar. In the absence of a signal, we set limits at the 95% C.L. on the cross section for H production sigma(p (p) over bar -> H + X) in these final states. For a mass of M-H = 160 GeV, the limit is a factor of 3.9 larger than the cross section in the standard model and consistent with an a priori expected sensitivity of 5.0.

- We present the first simultaneous measurement of the ratio of branching fractions, R = B(t --> Wb)/B(t --> Wq), with q being a d, s, or b quark, and the top-quark pair production cross section sigma(t (t) over bar) in the lepton plus jets channel using 0.9 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collision data at root s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector. We extract R and sigma(t (t) over bar) by analyzing samples of events with 0, 1, and >= 2 identified b jets. We measure R = 0.97(-0.08)(+0.09) (stat + syst) and sigma(t (t) over bar) = 8.18(-0.84)(+0.90) (stat + syst) +/- 0.50(lumi) pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction.

- We present a study of the normalized transverse momentum distribution of W bosons produced in p (p) over bar collisions, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.35 fb(-1) collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. The measurement focuses on the transverse momentum region below 15 GeV, which is of special interest for electroweak precision measurements; it relies on the same detector calibration methods which were used for the precision measurement of the W boson mass. The measured distribution is compared to different QCD predictions and a procedure is given to allow the comparison of any further theoretical models to the D0 data.
