Electronic gJ Factors, Natural Lifetimes, and Electric Quadrupole Interaction for Rb 87 in the np ^(2)P_(3/2) Series of the Rb I Spectrum

- For Rb 87 the level crossing method was applied to the first four levels ( n = 5, 6, 7, and 8) of the np 2 P 3/2 series in the Rb I spectrum. By using magnetic dipole interaction constants from corresponding zero field optical double resonance experiments, the electronic g J factors of 5, 6, and 7 p 2 P 3/2 were calculated from the level crossing data. For these levels the natural radiative lifetimes were determined from the half-widths of the level crossing signals. For 8 p 2 P 3/2 the a factor was obtained assuming g J = -1.336 (2). From the measured electric quadrupole interaction constants b , decreasing values of the nuclear quadrupole moment Q were obtained in 5, 6, 7, and 8 p 2 P 3/2 . When core polarization effects are taken into account, the different 2 P 3/2 levels yield consistent values for the quadrupole moment. We find ----- -- g J (5 p 2 P 3/2 ) = -1.3362 (6) -- g J (6 p 2 P 3/2 ) = -1.3347 (10) ----- -- Ï (5 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 25.8 (8) ns -- Ï (6 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 111 (3) ns ----- -- b (5 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 12.510 (57) MHz -- b (6 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 3.947 (13) MHz ----- -- Q (5 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 0.131 barn -- Q (6 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 0.133 barn ----- -- g J (7 p 2 P 3/2 ) = -1.3359 (11) -- a (8 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 6.747 (14) MHz ----- -- Ï (7 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 233 (10) ns -- b (8 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 0.933 (20) MHz ----- -- b (7 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 1.768 (8) MHz -- Q (8 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 0.131 barn ----- -- Q (7 p 2 P 3/2 ) = 0.133 barn -- ----- Considering possible sources of error in the evaluation of the quadrupole moment we obtain Q (Rb 87 ) = +0.132 (9) barn.

- Natural lifetimes of some highly excited levels in the Pb-I spectrum have been measured by the zero field level crossing (Hanle) method. The levels were reached by optical excitation from the metastable 6p2 3P2 and 6p2 3P1 states, were a considerable population had been created by means of adc discharge in a Pb atomic beam. An atomic beam source producing atoms in metastable states is described. For the lifetimes t of the investigated levels we find:t(6p(1/2)6d3D1)=3.74(28) ns,t(6p(1/2)6d3F2)=25.8(1.3) ns,t(6p(1/2)6d3D2)=4.17(-31)(-49) ns,t(6p(1/2)6d3F3)=6.08(26) ns,t(6p(3/2)7s)3P2=5.85(27) ns. These results are compared with lifetimes derived from oscillator strengths given in the literature.

- As a first application of optical double resonance and zero field level crossing spectroscopy to the elements of the sixth group in the periodic table of the atoms, the 5p36s5S2 level in the Te-I spectrum was investigated using natural tellurium in a high temperature quartz cell. For the electronic Landé-factor and the natural radiative lifetime the following values were obtained:$$g_J \left( {5p^3 6s^5 S_2 } \right) = - 1.9657\left( {12} \right),\tau \left( {5p^3 6s^5 S_2 } \right) = 71.8\left( {2.2} \right)ns.$$

- Natural radiative lifetimes of some excited levels belonging to the 5 p 6 s and 5 p 5 d configurations have been measured by the Hanle method. Some of the levels could be optically excited only from the metastable 3 P 1 and 3 P 2 levels of the 5 p 2 ground configuration. These comparatively low-lying levels were sufficiently populated at the temperature necessary to produce a Sn atomic beam. The following results were obtained: Ï(5 p (3/2)6 s 1 P 1 ) = 4.11 (22) ns Ï(5 p (1/2)5 d 3 D 1 ) = 3.9 (5) ns Ï(5 p (1/2)6 s 3 P 1 ) = 4.75 (18) ns Ï(5 p (1/2)5 d 3 D 2 ) = 5.5 (4) ns Ï(5 p (3/2)6 s 3 P 2 ) = 4.25 (23) ns Ï(5 p (1/2)5 d 3 D 3 ) = 5.8 (6) ns These values are compared with the results from other types of investigations.

- Our previous level crossing measurements in the 6, 7, and 8 p 2 P 3/2 levels of Cs 133 have been extended to the 9 and 10 p 2 P 3/2 levels. For the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole interaction constants a and b we obtain ##IMG## [http://ej.iop.org/images/1402-4896/5/4-5/010/img1.gif] {figure 1} The natural lifetime of 9 p 2 P 3/2 was found to be 390 (30) ns. The previous analysis for the 6 and 7 p 2 P 3/2 levels is revised, taking new experimental data from this and other laboratories into account. This leads to a better consistency for the quadrupole moments Q for Cs 135 and Cs 137 as evaluated from the 6 and 7 p 2 P 3/2 levels. We obtain Q (Cs 135 ) = +0.052 (4) barn Q (Cs 137 ) = +0.053 (4) barn

- Landé gJ factors are determined for the three lowest 2P levels in the Cs atom from measured level crossing positions together with a factors determined by zero field double resonance. The hyperfine anomalies between 133Cs, 135Cs and 137Cs are discussed.
