- The difference between the slow adjustment of localized resources and the faster processes of technical change and product renewal cause a relocation pressure on existing production. Introduction of new products, techniques and establishments is stimulated by opportunities to attain temporary monopoly profits and is restrained by sunk costs in older vintages and competition for local resources. Introduction is more frequent in nodes with a rich and varied importstructure. The process can be modelledas a chain of import, production and export cycles with relocation. Conditions for introduction and change of location are analysed by means of a spatial vintage model.

Modelling Commodity Flows on Trade Networks : Retrospect and Prospect

- Various approaches to the estimation of commodity flow or trade share matrices across world trade networks are examined. Some serious drawbacks associated with the use of spatial price equilibrium models are identified, and a case is made for combining two or more individual approaches, such as may be found in "dispersed" spatial price equilibrium models or in computable general equilibrium models which cater for spatial heterogeneity. It is found that some variant of the gravity model may be a reliable guide to trade share patterns in the long run, particularly in a world of differentiated products and increasing returns to scale. A conclusive finding is that quite different models ought to be adopted for different commodities (i.e. markets) in the short and medium term perspective.

Godstransporter och snabbtåg : Om konkurrensvillkor och regionala effekter

- I vilken grad förmår satsningar på modem järnvägsteknik attrahera godsflöden från vägtransporter? På vilken typ av länkar kan sådana investeringar förväntas ge samhällsekonomiska överskott? Innebär en satsning på järnvägens godstransporter att den regionala strukturen påverkas i någon bemärkelse eller är de regionala effekterna neutrala? Debatten om nya järnvägar fokuseras vanligen på passagerartransporter, vi riktar här istället intresset mot godstransportmarknaden. I centrum finns det tillsynes paradoxala faktum att i en tid när industrins företrädare och regionala politiker hävdar att förbättrade järnvägar är nödvändiga för bevarad konkurrenskraft och regional utveckling visar detta sig inte i transportkundemas värdering av tidsvinster och förbättrad precision. Regionalvetenskaplig forskning har inte heller kunnat belägga en entydig kausalitet från infrastrukturinvesteringar till välfärden i en viss region. Den genomgång av internationelllitteratur vi redovisar här pekar trots det på att snabba godstransporter med tåg har förutsättningar att attrahera flöden och påverka tillgänglighet och rumslig struktur. Genomgången indikerar samtidigt att välfärdsvinster även kan erhållas via förändringar i själva strukturen på godstransportmarknaden. Studien bekräftar att metoder för investeringskalkyler vid järnvägsinvesteringar är ett eftersatt område i Sverige.

- We present a spatial computable general equilibrium model for which the Walras' law is employed to articulate the general equilibrium of a spatially separated economy while Wardrop's first principle is used to enuniciate the flow equilibrium on a general transportaion network. A price and transportation cost dependent input-output matrix is employed to alleviate the need for explicit supply and factor demand functions found in traditional Samuelson-Takayama-Judge spatial price equilibrium models. A detailed transportation network presentation is employed to more precisely predict commodity movements. A numerical example with constant net out matrix is also presented.
