  • Developing lean and agile health care supply chains
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Supply chain management. - : Emerald. - 1359-8546 .- 1758-6852. ; 16:3, s. 176-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The objective of this exploratory paper is to find out what is important to consider when developing a supply chain in health care, what is required in order to establish a supply chain orientation and how lean and agile can be used as process strategies in order to improve supply chain performance. Design/methodology/approach – In order to build an empirical framework for using both lean and agile strategies in health care supply chain management illustrative examples are provided from a Swedish health care setting describing the patient flow and planning processes. Findings – Supply chain management has potential to work well as a philosophy for patient flow in the health care sector. However, it should not only be about the use of the concept of lean in health care, as in fact is the case in practice today. It is rather about organizing for quick response and flexibility in a hybrid strategy through combining lean and agile process strategies. This can only be done if a systems approach is applied together with a strategic orientation, where cooperative efforts by the supply chain members should synchronize and converge operational as well as strategic capabilities into a unified whole. Practical implications – The analysis in the paper underlines the importance of focusing on both agility and leanness combined. Hospitals or health care systems that introduce such an approach, as opposed to only relying on lean strategies, could gain both competitive advantages and improved performance. Originality/value – In health care, even more so than in the manufacturing industry, containment of costs without sacrificing quality is important. This paper applies SCM techniques, tools and concepts that have not been used previously for patient flow in a health care setting, combining lean and agile in one and the same analysis.

  • Cost-Minimizing Choice Behavior in Transportation Planning : A Theoretical Framework fo Logit Models
  • 2010
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book stems from a desire to understand the underlying assumptions and structureof the choice probability models most often used in transportation planning. The bookinvestigates how far a new way of defining cost minimizing behavior can take us. Allcommonly used choice probability distributions of the logit type – log linear probabilityfunctions – follow from cost minimizing behavior defined in the new way; some newnested models also appear. The new approach provides a deeper understanding of whatis at work in the models. The new way of defining cost minimizing behavior is as follows:cost minimizing behavior pertains if the likelihood (probability) of any independentsample of observations is a decreasing function of the average cost of the sample.Extreme value distributed random variables are not used in the derivation of models. Ameasure of freedom of choice related to the Shannon measure of how much "choice" isinvolved is used to obtain a welfare measure which is equal to composite cost.... more on http://springer.com/978-3-642-11910-1

  • 2011. - 500
  • Ingår i: International Manufacturing Networks. - San Sebastian : Eusko Jaurlaritzaren. - 9788445731819 ; , s. 67-94
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper seeks to extend existing manufacturing system concepts and develop new structured knowledge about international manufacturing networks by analysing the networks, classifying the configurations and identifying the capabilities. The design and operation of international manufacturing networks is an increasingly important issue for transnational corporations faced with rapid changes in global market opportunity, competition and new managerial mechanisms. Four international manufacturing networks in mechanical and process industries are analysed and a number of conclusions drawn: first, a novel configuration map is proposed; second, key strategic capability parameters are identified; third, networking trends and their implications for configuration are discussed. Finally, the paper explores strengths and weaknesses of the particular methodology adopted in this research.

  • Production planning in process industries
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose of this paperThe purpose is to map the production planning process in process industries and analyze how it is related to their specific planning conditions and available literature. Further on the research aim at detecting similarities and differences in production planning at tactical level.Design/methodology/approachThe research methodology has an embedded multi-case design with focus on planning processes involving several entities within the companies. Information sources are documentation and interviews.FindingsProcess industries with different structures and conditions plan production differently. For instance a difference has been found between how material dominated companies plan compared to capacity dominated ones.Research limitations/implicationsFocus in this research has been on production planning at tactical level and therefore the strategic and operational level has mainly been left out of the study. What is original/value of paperThe research gives insights in production planning processes for process industries and presents ideas on why the different production planning processes are designed as they are according some specific conditions.

  • Effects from implementing advanced planning & scheduling systems for supply chain planning
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2011 EurOMA conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose is to analyze the effects from Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) systems for supply chain planning, both in terms of experienced benefits and problems, and the impact of the planning context and implementation approach. The research is based on a multiple case study of five manufacturing firms. It is concluded that the APS implementation focus and APS use impact three effect types differently if applying a process or system focus and more positively if applying an APS lead, compared to lag, approach. It also shows that the organisation, individuals, technology impact the effects, no matter APS implementation focus.

  • The Connected Enterprise - who is in charge? : The Swedish Sports example
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: PTC'11, Connecting Life 24/7. - Honolulu : Pacific Telecommunications Council. ; , s. 1587-1597
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A general view is that today's workforce is distributed, mobile, and always connected.Organisations are expected to grow ever more reliant on collaboration between widelydispersed workers, and customers expect to have instant access to information and eenabledservices. The individual on the move who is temporarily deprived of broadbandaccess becomes handicapped, cut off from the recently adopted always-connectedlifestyle. And socially, both at work and with family and friends, social networking toolshelp us keep connected with a host of people, ranging from friends and close associatesto casual acquaintances. How are organizations coping with this recently emerging communication environment? In this article, we present and analyse the Swedish Sports example. Swedish Sports is afederation of close to 70 sports associations, who in turn count 20,000 local clubs asmembers. In these local clubs, close to a third of the Swedish population are members.Based on a study performed in the winter and spring of 2009-2010, and comparing witha study performed in 2003, we chart the changing communication patterns from a cluband association perspective. We note similarities and differences in the communicationfrom club to members, from members to clubs and between members. In general, broadband-enabled and mobile telephony-based communication is gainingground and has come to dominate the scene, while a number of classical forms ofcommunication are still not discontinued. However, in contrast to the current “generalknowledge” view, social networking tools still play a very minor role in the clubs. Forexample, Facebook use typically neither challenges, nor supports, organizationalcommunication in sports clubs. In the cases where it is used, it mostly appears to bebased on grassroots initiatives, rather than club-directed ones. There are also very fewexamples of social networking tools as an alternative way of organizing sports activities. But on the sports association and federation level, alternatives based on Facebook keepappearing. However, the important, influential ones need functionality that require wellsystematiseddatabases tailored to the specific needs of the sport. And although theinitial growth rate of some Facebook groups is impressive, it takes time to build afollowing that makes a site important. Our conclusions are that the communication landscape is changing, in favour ofbroadband and mobile telephony-enabled forms. However, the established sports clubsare still in charge of organising sports activities. The challenges arise in the fan andinterest group areas, where virtual alternatives are created and developed by interestedand enthusiastic individuals, rather than by established organisations. The example explored is in the Swedish Sports sphere, but the results are likely to be of importancealso to other organisations with a large customer base or potential interest groupexposure.

  • Maintenance management in process industries:mapping current practices
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 17th EurOMA conference, 2010.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall purpose of this research is to map the maintenance management in three companies in the process industry sector and to analyse whether these companies apply a holistic perspective on their maintenance management. We have mapped our cases using the framework developed by Crespo Márquez et al. (2009) and our results show that even though maintenance is of utmost importance in the process industry, few companies have a strategic and holistic perspective on maintenance management.
