Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
- This Letter presents a measurement of the W+W− production cross section in s√ = 7 TeV pp collisions by the ATLAS experiment, using 34 pb−1 of integrated luminosity produced by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Selecting events with two isolated leptons, each either an electron or a muon, 8 candidate events are observed with an expected background of 1.7±0.6 events. The measured cross section is 41+20−16(stat)±5(syst)±1(lumi) pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction of 44±3 pb calculated at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- A search for long-lived charginos produced either directly or in the cascade decay of heavy prompt gluino states is presented. The search is based on proton–proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of s√s = 13 TeVeV between 2015 and 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb−1. Long-lived charginos are characterised by a distinct signature of a short and then disappearing track, and are reconstructed using at least four measurements in the ATLAS pixel detector, with no subsequent measurements in the silicon-microstrip tracking volume nor any associated energy deposits in the calorimeter. The final state is complemented by a large missing transverse-momentum requirement for triggering purposes and at least one high-transverse-momentum jet. No excess above the expected backgrounds is observed. Exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence level on the masses of the chargino and gluino for different chargino lifetimes. Chargino masses up to 660 (210) GeVeV are excluded in scenarios where the chargino is a pure wino (higgsino). For charginos produced during the cascade decay of a heavy gluino, gluinos with masses below 2.1 TeVeV are excluded for a chargino mass of 300 GeVeV and a lifetime of 0.2 ns.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- A search is presented for non-resonant Higgs boson pair production, targeting the bbZZ, 4V (V = W or Z), VVττ, 4τ, γγVV and γγττ decay channels. Events are categorised based on the multiplicity of light charged leptons (electrons or muons), hadronically decaying tau leptons, and photons. The search is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. No evidence of the signal is found and the observed (expected) upper limit on the cross-section for non-resonant Higgs boson pair production is determined to be 17 (11) times the Standard Model predicted cross-section at 95% confidence level under the background-only hypothesis. The observed (expected) constraints on the HHH coupling modifier, κλ, are determined to be −6.2 < κλ< 11.6 (−4.5 < κλ< 9.6) at 95% confidence level, assuming the Standard Model for the expected limits and that new physics would only affect κλ.

Search for production of resonant states in the photon-jet mass distribution using pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector

Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
- This Letter describes a model-independent search for production of new resonant states in photon-jet events in 2.11 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. We compare the photon-jet mass distribution to a data-driven background estimate and find consistency with the background hypothesis. Given the lack of evidence for a signal, we set 95% CL limits on generic Gaussian-shape signals and on a benchmark excited-quark (q*) model, excluding 2 TeV Gaussian resonances with cross section times branching ratio times acceptance times efficiency near 5 fb and excluding q* masses below 2.46 TeV, respectively.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- This paper presents studies of Bose–Einstein correlations (BEC) in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using data from the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Data were collected in a special low-luminosity configuration with a minimum-bias trigger and a high-multiplicity track trigger, accumulating integrated luminosities of 151 μμb−1 and 8.4 nb−1, respectively. The BEC are measured for pairs of like-sign charged particles, each with |η|<2.5|η|<2.5, for two kinematic ranges: the first with particle pT>100 MeV and the second with particle pT>500 MeV. The BEC parameters, characterizing the source radius and particle correlation strength, are investigated as functions of charged-particle multiplicity (up to 300) and average transverse momentum of the pair (up to 1.5 GeV). The double-differential dependence on charged-particle multiplicity and average transverse momentum of the pair is also studied. The BEC radius is found to be independent of the charged-particle multiplicity for high charged-particle multiplicity (above 100), confirming a previous observation at lower energy. This saturation occurs independent of the transverse momentum of the pair.
