  • On the Change of Periodicities in the Hicksian Multiplier-Accelerator Model with a Consumption Floor
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Chaos, Solitons & Fractals. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-0779 .- 1873-2887. ; 29:3, s. 681-696
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Hicksian multiplier-accelerator model with “floor” and “ceiling” continues to be the most successful machine generating business cycles. This is, no doubt, due to its capability of explaining both downturn and upswing through one single model. The “ceiling” is due to a full employment constraint, whereas the “floor” is due to a limit to disinvestment when no worn out capital at all is replaced. However, another “floor” to consumption at zero level seems never to have been discussed. Hence, net disinvestments, even if they are bounded downwards, may also give rise to negative consumption, which is absurd. As we will show, the effect of an additional constraint to avoid this is easy to analyze, and results in a change of the periodicities according to a simple rule.

  • On the economics of increasing complexity : With some special focus on culture
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization. - : Elsevier. - 0167-2681 .- 1879-1751. ; 75:1, s. 59-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This contribution seeks to find a setting in which evolution in terms of changing structure, rather than growth within a given structure, can be modelled. In particular the evolution of increasing complexity is focused. The setting chosen uses Lancasterian property space as an invariant in which the changing, emerging, and disappearing actual implements are property bundles. The aim is to produce a development tree like the Darwinian, and the tool used for modelling the branching bifurcations is catastrophe theory.

  • On the genesis of hexagonal shapes
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Networks and Spatial Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1566-113X .- 1572-9427. ; 5:1, s. 5-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hexagonal shapes for market areas have been dominant in spatial economics ever since Christaller observed them and Losch explained their emergence in terms of optimality. It is observed in the following that, though hexagons are best, the differences to for instance squares in terms of efficiency are negligibly small. As the existence of hexagonal shapes-in the space economy, as well as in beehives or other patterns of the physical world cannot be denied-a different cause for their emergence is proposed. Such an explanation is structural stability, which allows three market areas, but not four or six, to come together in each common vertex. The focus is hence the way market areas are organized in space, rather than their shape.

  • On the profitability of exhausting natural resources
  • 1977
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Economics and Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0095-0696 .- 1096-0449. ; 4:3, s. 185-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two models are treated. One deals with a mineral deposit, the other with a biological substance. It is assumed that in the deposit there exist all grades of ore, and that, the biological substance grows as long as a positive quantity is left. The course of investment, and production decisions is derived when capital is expressly built up for the purpose of exploitation of the specific resource. Within the simple linear control problem it is concluded that exhaustion is never profitable. The steady state in the biological case is discussed and compared to maximum sustainable yield.

  • Order and disorder in business cycles
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Annals of Operations Research. - : Springer-Verlag. - 0254-5330 .- 1572-9338. ; 37:1, s. 169-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is shown that a very simple business cycle model of the multiplier-accelerator type can produce chaotic motion. The model uses a cubic approximation of the nonlinear floor-roof type of investment function, and a two-period distributed lag for consumption. It can be cast as a cubic iterative map for income differences, so that chaotic motion for the differences results in Brownian random walk for income itself. The case can be analyzed by means similar to those used in the study of the iterated quadratic mapping. The cubic, except being based on economic principles, has the advantage over the quadratic that it produces cyclical change. In the fast process for income differences the slowly moving income itself becomes a parameter responsible for feedback causing bifurcations between chaotic and ordered behaviour.
