  • Hybrid digital manufacturing: Capturing the value of digitalization
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Operations Management. - : Wiley. - 1873-1317 .- 0272-6963. ; 69:6, s. 890-910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A chasm is growing between the advanced technologies available for improving manufacturing operations and those effectively used in practice. The vision of Industry 4.0 is to mobilize industry to seek out these possibilities for improvement and to close the gap between opportunity and reality. However, when compared with more established improvement opportunities such as lean manufacturing, the digitalization of manufacturing lacks in both paradigmatic examples and an understanding of how to achieve the benefits. This lack is a complication of concern: Without an appropriate operations strategy to capture the value of digitalization, manufacturing companies will be unable to focus on technological investments and operational changes. To address this concern, operations management academics must develop new theory through active engagement in the practice of digitalization in manufacturing. This research presents a paradigmatic example, based on engaged scholarship, focused on effectively combining novel object-interactive and conventional manufacturing syntax for benefiting from digitalization in internal operations and the wider supply chain. The contribution to literature is a novel operations strategy—hybrid digital manufacturing—for capturing the value of Industry 4.0 technologies.

  • Computational modeling of inelastic large ratcheting strains
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Plasticity. ; 21:5, s. 955-980
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A framework forphenomenological hyperelasto-plasticity with initial anisotropy, kinematic hardening as well as anisotropic damage is presented inMenzel et al. (2003a).In this contribution we exploit and extend this framework toinclude several back-stresses in order to capture the ratchettingresponse of polycrystalline metals subjected to cyclic stress withnon-zero mid-value. The evolution equations for kinematichardening resemble a linear combination of the multiple-Armstrong-Frederic and the Burlet-Cailletaudmodels, which are extended to the large strain setting. Thecapability of the model to capture various phenomenologicalcharacteristics, in particular multi-axial ratchetting, isillustrated by numerical examples. Comparisons with uni-axial andbi-axial experimental ratchetting results for carbon steel aregiven. Finally, the finite element analysis of a simplifiedrailway turnout component subjected to cyclic loading ispresented.

  • Parameter identification for constitutive models with error control
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: ECCOMAS 2004, European Congress on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences and Engineering. - 9513918688
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A recently proposed technique for the calibration ofconstitutive models, that is based on optimization with built-in error control, is applied to Norton's viscoelasticity model. In order to focus on the characteristic features, only the constitutive response for uniaxial stress is considered; however, the extension to multiaxial states and spatially non-homogeneous situations is quite straightforward although technically more complex. Essentially, the optimization strategy is based onNewton's method and consists of solving three linear problems running forwards in time and one linear problem (for the costate) running backwards in time. It is interesting to note that the same problem character is pertinent to the solution of the dual problem, which is the basis for the a posteriori error computation.

  • Calibration of a Nonlinear Elastic Composite with Goal-Oriented Error Control Using a Sub-Scale Modeling Approach
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proc. of Second International Conference on Multiscale Materials Modeling, MMM-2, October 11-15, 2004. ; 1:1, s. 466-468
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A recently proposed technique for the calibration of constitutive models is based on the optimization problem expressed such that the state equation is incorporated via an additional costate field. A distinct advantage is that error control is formally straightforward. This technique is applied to calibration of a nonlinear elastic composite using a meso-macro-transition approach, whereby the RVE is analyzed using (in this case) Dirichlet boundary conditions. The numerical results show the effectivity of the error prediction.

  • Calibration of a nonlinear viscoelasticity model with sensitivity assessment
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Constitutive Models for Rubber IV, edited by P.-E. Austrell & L. Kari. - 0415383463 ; , s. 341-347
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The calibration of constitutive models isbased on the solution of an optimization problem, where parameter values are sought such that optimal correspondence between measured and simulated response is achieved. The calibration problem is solved using a recently proposed strategy, which has the advantage that discretization errors induced in the simulated response, leading to errors in the optimal parameter values, isrelatively straightforward to estimate. Furthermore, it ispossible to estimate how sensitive the obtained solution is to uncertainties in the experimental data.
