  • Cognitive bias via the Internet : A comparison of web-based and standard emotional Stroop tasks in social phobia
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1650-6073 .- 1651-2316. ; 35:1, s. 55-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is accumulating evidence to suggest that social phobia is associated with attentional bias for words related to social threat. Information processing in individuals with social phobia (n = 87) was investigated in the present study using 2 versions of the emotional Stroop task. Results from a standard emotional Stroop task indicated delayed colour naming of socially threatening words relative to neutral words, in line with previous research, whereas results from a Web-based emotional Stroop task indicated a facilitation effect, with faster manual indication of colour choice for socially threatening words than for neutral words. Possible explanations for these contrasting findings and issues for further research are discussed. © 2006 Taylor & Francis.

  • Assaying cardiac biomarkers for toxicity testing using biosensing and cardiomyocytes derived from human embryonic stem cells
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF BIOTECHNOLOGY. - : Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam.. - 0168-1656 .- 1873-4863. ; 150:1, s. 175-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human embryonic stem cell (hESC) derived cardiomyocytes are in the present study being used for testing drug-induced cardiotoxicity in a biosensor set-up. The design of an in vitro testing alternative provides a novel opportunity to surpass previous methods based on rodent cells or cell lines due to its significantly higher toxicological relevance. In this report we demonstrate how hESC-derived cardiomyocytes release detectable levels of two clinically decisive cardiac biomarkers, cardiac troponin T and fatty acid binding protein 3, when the cardiac cells are exposed to the well-known cardioactive drug compound. doxorubicin. The release is monitored by the immuno-biosensor technique surface plasmon resonance, particularly appropriate due to its capacity for parallel and high-throughput analysis in complex media.

  • Hand, Wrist, and Forearm Injuries in Male Professional Soccer Players: A Prospective Cohort Study of 558 Team-Seasons From 2001-2002 to 2018-2019
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine. - : SAGE Publications. - 2325-9671. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The literature on upper extremity injuries in professional soccer players is scarce, and further insight into the onset and cause of these injuries as well as potential differences between goalkeepers and outfield players is important. Purpose: To investigate the epidemiology of hand, wrist, and forearm injuries in male professional soccer players between 2001 and 2019. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: Between the 2001-2002 and 2018-2019 seasons, 120 European male soccer teams were followed prospectively for a varying number of seasons (558 team-seasons in total). Time-loss injuries and player-exposures to training sessions and matches were recorded on an individual basis in 6754 unique players. Injury incidence was reported as the number of injuries per 1000 player-hours, and between-group differences were analyzed using Z statistics and rate ratios (RRs) with 95% CIs. Between-group differences in layoff time were analyzed. Results: In total, 25,462 injuries were recorded, with 238 (0.9%) of these affecting the hand (71.4%; n = 170), wrist (16.8%; n = 40), and forearm (11.8%; n = 28), producing an incidence of 0.065 injuries per 1000 hours. A majority of the injuries were traumatic with an acute onset (98.7%; n = 235). Fractures were the most common injuries recorded (58.8%; n = 140), often involving the metacarpal bones (25.2%; n = 60) and phalanges (10.1%; n = 24). The injury incidence was significantly higher for goalkeepers (115 injuries; 0.265 per 1000 hours) compared with outfield players (123 injuries; 0.038 per 1000 hours) (RR, 7.0 [95% CI, 5.4-9.0]). Goalkeepers also had a significantly longer mean layoff time than outfield players (23 +/- 27 vs 15 +/- 27 days; P = .016). Conclusion: Injuries to the hand, wrist, and forearm constituted less than 1% of all time-loss injuries in male professional soccer players. Fractures were most common and constituted more than half of all injuries. Goalkeepers had a 7-fold higher incidence and an over 1-week longer mean layoff time compared with outfield players.

  • Inflation, Monetary Policy and Structural Adjustment in Zambia
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: International Economics. ; LV(4), s. 425-449
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyses the monetary policy and its impact on the rate of inflation during the economic structural adjustment programs in Zambia during 1987 to 1993. To avoid the Lucas critique, the focus is on a sample period, 1987 to 1993, which is relevant for analysing inflation and monetary policy during adjustment programs. The sample does not include other types of monetary regimes than the ones relevant for analysing the adjustment process. The supply of money and the price level are decomposed into permanent and transitory components. The results suggest that the price level in Zambia was driven by the supply of money, and that the authorities were able to reduce inflation by restricting the money supply process during the adjustment programs.

  • Beliefs about medicines are strongly associated with medicine-use patterns among the general population
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Clinical Practice. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1368-5031 .- 1742-1241. ; 70:3, s. 277-285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AimsTo investigate self-reported beliefs and perceived sensitivity to medicines and their effects in relation to self-reported use of medicines and herbal remedies. MethodsA survey sent to 13,931 randomly selected Swedish adults included the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire-General (BMQ-General) Questionnaire and the Perceived Sensitivity to Medicines Scale (PSM). The survey also asked about individuals' use of prescribed and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and herbal remedies in the past month. We examined all associations between scores on the BMQ-General subscales and PSM in relation to the use of medicines and herbal remedies, using analysis of covariance adjusted for potential confounders. ResultsAmong 7099 respondents, those using herbal remedies exclusively believed strongly that prescription and OTC medicines are harmful and overprescribed. Respondents using prescription and OTC medicines reported more positive beliefs [coefficient 0.67 (95% CI 0.47-0.87) and 0.70 (95% CI 0.51-0.90)] on the benefits of medicines compared with those using herbal remedies [-0.18 (95% CI -0.57-0.20)]. Perceived sensitivity to medicines was higher among those using herbal remedies only [1.25 (95% CI 0.46-2.03)] compared with those using no medicines (reference 0) or prescription [-0.44 (95% CI -0.84 to -0.05)] or OTC [-0.27 (95% CI -0.66-0.12)] medicines alone. ConclusionRespondents using prescription and/or OTC medicines reported stronger positive beliefs about the benefits of medicines in general, supporting the hypothesis that beliefs influence medicine use. Therefore, addressing beliefs and concerns about medicines during patient counselling may influence medicine use, particularly regarding unintentional non-adherence.

  • Effects of chewing gum against postoperative ileus after pancreaticoduodenectomy - a randomized controlled trial.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: BMC research notes. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1756-0500. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Postoperative ileus is common after surgery. One non-pharmacological intervention that has shown promising results in reducing the duration of postoperative ileus is chewing gum after surgery. However, this has not been investigated in upper gastrointestinal surgery such as pancreatic surgery. Hence the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chewing gum treatment on patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy ad modum whipple due to pancreatic or periampullary cancer.

  • Health is belonging: Lived experiences during recovery after pancreaticoduodenectomy.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: ISRN nursing. - : Hindawi Limited. - 2090-5483 .- 2090-5491. ; :Article ID 602323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to explore the lived experience of the symptoms, health, and illness reported by patients recovering after pancreaticoduodenectomy ad modum Whipple due to pancreatic or periampullary cancer. Thirteen patients with pancreatic or periampullary cancer who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy ad modum Whipple between 2006 and 2008 were interviewed during postoperative recovery. Data were analysed using the phenomenological-hermeneutic method. The structural analysis of patient experiences revealed that recovery after pancreaticoduodenectomy was described as recapturing everyday life, being healthy, and looking to the future. Participants experienced symptoms but did not dwell on them, instead they stated that their general health was good. They strived to regain their former precancer selves and be a part of as well as contribute to the social context. Overall, the participants’ view of the future was positive, and improvement in their health generated further confidence and encouragement. This study suggests that persons recovering from pancreaticoduodenectomy ad modum Whipple due to a pancreatic or periampullary tumour experience health despite postoperative symptoms. They manage their symptoms by means of different strategies and express a positive view of the future. Nurses working with such patients should adopt a person-centred approach focusing on patient perspectives, participation, and possibilities.

  • Phosphoinositide 3-kinase is involved in Xenopus and Labrus melanophore aggregation
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Cellular Signalling. - 0898-6568 .- 1873-3913. ; 15:12, s. 1119-1127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Melanophores are pigmented cells capable of quick colour changes through coordinated transport of their intracellular pigment granules. We demonstrate the involvement of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3-K) in Xenopus and Labrus aggregation by the use of the PI3-K inhibitor, LY-294002. In Xenopus, wortmannin-insensitive PI3-K was found to be essential for the aggregation, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation and tyrosine phosphorylation of a 280-kDa protein, and for the maintenance of low cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cAMP) during the aggregated state. Pre-aggregated cells disperse completely to LY-294002 at 50-100 muM, involving a transient elevation in cAMP due to adenylate cyclase (AC) stimulation or to inhibition of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE). The inactive analogue LY-303511 did not induce dispersion at the same concentrations. PDE4 and/or PDE2 was found to be involved in melanosome aggregation. The similar kinetics of LY-294002 and various PDE inhibitors indicates that the elevation of cAMP might be due to inhibition of PDE. In Labrus melanophores, LY-294002 had a less dramatic effect, probably due to less dependence on PDE in regulation of cAMP levels. In Xenopus aggregation, we suggest that melatonin stimulation of the Mel1c receptor via G(betagamma) activates PI3-K that, directly or indirectly via MAPK, activates PDE. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. • Surface immobilized zoledronate improves screw fixation in rat bone: A new method for the coating of metal implants
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF MATERIALS SCIENCE-MATERIALS IN MEDICINE. - : Springer Science Business Media. - 0957-4530 .- 1573-4838. ; 21:11, s. 3029-3037
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies show that surface immobilized bisphosphonates improve the fixation of stainless steel screws in rat tibia after 2-8 weeks of implantation. We report here about the immobilization of a potent bisphosphonate, zoledronate, to crosslinked fibrinogen by the use of another technique, i.e. ethyl-dimethyl-aminopropylcarbodiimide (EDC)/imidazole immobilization. Bone fixation of zoledronate-coated screws was compared to screws coated with crosslinked fibrinogen only and ditto with EDC/N-hydroxy-succinimide immobilized pamidronate. Fixation in rat tibia was evaluated by a pull-out test at either 2 or 6 weeks after implantation. Both bisphosphonate coatings increased the pull-out force at both time points, and zoledronate showed a significantly higher pull-out force than pamidronate. To further evaluate the new coating technique we also performed a morphometric study, focusing on the area surrounding the implant. The zoledronate coating resulted in an increased bone density around the screws compared to controls. No pronounced increase was seen around the pamidronate coated screws. Together, the results demonstrate the possibility of obtaining a significant local therapeutic effect with minute amounts of surface immobilized zoledronate.

  • PERson-centredness in Hypertension management using Information Technology: a randomized controlled trial in primary care
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of hypertension. - : LIPPINCOTT WILLIAMS & WILKINS. - 1473-5598 .- 0263-6352. ; 41:2, s. 246-253
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To increase the proportion of individuals with hypertension obtaining a blood pressure (BP) of less than 140/90 mmHg by improving the management of hypertension in daily life from a person-centred perspective. METHODS: In this unblinded randomized controlled trial, we tested an interactive web-based self-management system for hypertension. A total of 949 patients with hypertension from 31 primary healthcare centres (PHCCs) in Sweden were randomized 1 : 1 to either the intervention or usual care group. The intervention included daily measurement - via the participant's mobile phone - of BP and pulse and reports of well being, symptoms, lifestyle, medication intake and side effects for eight consecutive weeks. It also included reminders and optional motivational messages. The primary outcome was the proportion of participants obtaining BP of less than 140/90 mmHg at 8 weeks and 12 months. Significance was tested by Pearson's chi 2 -test. RESULTS: A total of 862 patients completed the trial, 442 in the intervention group and 420 in the control group. The primary outcome (BP <140/90 mmHg) at 8 weeks was achieved by 48.8% in the intervention group and 39.9% in the control group ( P  = 0.006). At 12 months, 47.1% (intervention) and 41.0% (control group) had a BP less than 140/90 mmHg ( P  = 0.071). CONCLUSION: The proportion of participants with a controlled BP of less than 140/90 mmHg increased after using the interactive system for self-management of hypertension for 8 weeks compared with usual care. Although the trend continued, there was no significant difference after 12 months. The results indicate that the effect of the intervention is significant, but the long-term effect is uncertain. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03554382).
