  • Acupuncture treatment of pregnant women with low back and pelvic pain - an intervention study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : Wiley. - 1471-6712 .- 0283-9318. ; 24:1, s. 175-182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To describe patients' experience of acupuncture treatment in low back and pelvic pain during pregnancy. Design: An intervention study carried out between September 2000 and December 2001, involving 40 pregnant women. Participants: The study population consisted of healthy pregnant women presenting with low back and pelvic pain at maternity health care centres within a defined area in southern Sweden. Intervention: Two groups of women received acupuncture treatment from gestational week 20 (group 1) or week 26 (group 2) respectively, for a period of 6 weeks divided into eight sessions of 30 minutes each. Measurements: Pain assessment was carried out using Pain-O-Meter and visual analogue scale (POM-VAS), Short-Form McGill Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), Short-Form-36: Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36), followed by telephone interviews 2-3 months after delivery. Findings: The results of POM-VAS, SF-MPQ and SF-36 showed a relief of pain in both groups. In group 2, an improvement in several SF-36 variables was noted in spite of increased physical restrictions. Telephone interviews confirmed that expectations of treatment were fulfilled. Using content analysis the main category, limitations in daily life, was identified, with subcategories pain, and psychological well-being. Conclusion: It may be advantageous to begin acupuncture therapy later in pregnancy to maximise pain relief.

  • A qualitative study of the experiences during radiotherapy of Swedish patients suffering from lung cancer.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Oncology Nursing Forum. - 0190-535X. ; 31:2, s. 329-334
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose/Objectives: To describe experiences during radiotherapy of patients suffering from lung cancer. Design: Inductive, qualitative. Setting: A radiotherapy department in the south of Sweden. Sample: 15 patients with lung cancer undergoing their second week of radiotherapy. Methodologic Approach: Interviews were conducted in a hospital setting, transcribed, and content analyzed. Main Research Variables: Experiences during radiotherapy. Findings: The patients' experiences fall into four categories: fatigue, physical distress, managing disease- and treatment-related issues, and obstacles to managing. Fatigue was a major experience expressed in terms of low energy levels and low fitness, sometimes leading to social isolation. Conclusions: Nurses need to implement interventions to minimize side effects of radiotherapy and maximize patients' abilities to manage the disease and the treatment. Interpretation: Informing and educating patients about pretreatment and assessing fatigue as well as implementing interventions (e.g., nurse-patient interaction, support, information, encouragement, focus on the patients' own resources) may lead to improved comprehensive care during radiation therapy.

  • The oral ecosystem : implications for education
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European journal of dental education. - : Wiley. - 1396-5883 .- 1600-0579. ; 10:4, s. 192-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a model that is applicable to oral health education. The model describes the oral cavity in a complexity-based ecological context. This concept includes the premise that factors from different organisational levels (biological, individual, community, society) interact in a complex way with the potential to 'stress' the ecosystem and thereby provoke changes. This mode of action complies with the understanding of the oral cavity as a complex adaptive system. An ecological model is actively used in the undergraduate problem-based curriculum at the Faculty of Odontology, Malmo University, Sweden and has recently been applied as a conceptual basis for the new dental curriculum being established at the University of Tromso in Northern Norway. The purpose is to encourage and promote an ecological, health-oriented view and to stimulate reflections on premises for oral health and diseases in an integrated context.

  • 1.2 Cognition and learning.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Dental Education. - : Wiley. - 1396-5883 .- 1600-0579. ; 6:Suppl 3, s. 27-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This theme is concerned with the relevance and efficacy of educational methods adopted in dental schools while recognizing the influence of geopolitical issues in different countries and regions. Particular emphasis will be given to examples of best practices and innovations. Cognition and learning are dealt with in many different research areas such as education, psychology, cognitive sciences, brain research, neurolinguistics, gender, etc. and comprise the theoretical foundation for the philosophies, principles and methods underlying the dental education system. Educational methods are many and mixed. This group has used existing knowledge, personal experiences and current literature together with some of the material from the DentEd visits.
