  • Three- and four-jet production at low x at HERA
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 54:3, s. 389-409
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three- and four-jet production is measured in deep-inelastic ep scattering at low x and Q(2) with the H1 detector using an integrated luminosity of 44.2 pb(-1). Several phase space regions are selected for the three-jet analysis in order to study the underlying parton dynamics from global topologies to the more restrictive regions of forward jets close to the proton direction. The measurements of cross sections for events with at least three jets are compared to fixed order QCD predictions of O(alpha(2)(s)) and O(alpha(3)(s)) and with Monte Carlo simulation programs where higher order effects are approximated by parton showers. A good overall description is provided by the O(alpha(3)(s)) calculation. Too few events are predicted at the lowest x similar to 10(-4), especially for topologies with two forward jets. This hints to large contributions at low x from initial state radiation of gluons close to the proton direction and unordered in transverse momentum. The Monte Carlo program in which gluon radiation is generated by the colour dipole model gives a good description of both the three- and the four-jet data in absolute normalisation and shape.

  • The effect of different lung densities on the accuracy of various radiotherapy dose calculation methods: Implications for tumour coverage
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Radiotherapy and Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-0887 .- 0167-8140. ; 91:3, s. 405-414
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To evaluate against Monte-Carlo the performance of various dose calculations algorithms regarding lung turnout coverage in stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) conditions. Materials and methods: Dose distributions in virtual lung phantoms have been calculated using four commercial Treatment Planning System (TPS) algorithms and one Monte Carlo (MC) system (EGSnrc). We compared the performance of the algorithms in calculating the target dose for different degrees of lung inflation. The phantoms had a cubic 'body' and 'lung' and a central 2-cm diameter spherical 'tumour' (the body and turnout have unit density). The lung tissue was assigned five densities (rho(lung)): 0.01, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 1 g/cm(3). Four-field treatment plans were calculated with 6- and 18 MV narrow beams for each value of rho(lung). We considered the Pencil Beam Convolution (PBCEl) and the Analytical Anisotropic Algorithm (AAA(ECl)) from Varian Eclipse and the Pencil Beam Convolution (PBCOMP) and the Collapsed Cone Convolution (CCCOMP) algorithms from Oncentra MasterPlan. Results: When changing rho(lung) from 0.4 to 0.1 g/cm(3), the MC median target dose decreased from 89.2% to 74.9% for 6 MV and from 83.3% to 61.6% for 18 MV (of dose maximum in the homogenous case at both energies), while for both PB algorithms the median target dose was virtually independent of lung density. Conclusions: Both PB algorithms overestimated the target dose, the overestimation increasing as rho(lung) decreased. Concerning target dose, the AAA(ECl) and CCCOMP algorithms appear to be adequate alternatives to MC. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved. Radiotherapy and oncology 91 (2009) 405-414

  • Rosiglitazone counteracts palmitate-induced beta-cell dysfunction by suppression of MAP kinase, inducible nitric oxide synthase and caspase 3 activities.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1420-9071 .- 1420-682X. ; 65:14, s. 2256-2265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chronic exposure of pancreatic islets to elevated levels of palmitate leads to beta-cell dysfunction. We examined possible involvement of mitogenactivated protein kinases (MAPKs) and caspase-3 in palmitate-induced beta-cell dysfunction and tested the influence of the anti-diabetic drug rosiglitazone (ROZ). Palmitate amplified glucose-stimulated augmentation of intracellular free calcium ([Ca(2+)](i)) and insulin secretion in incubated islets. ROZ suppressed this amplification, whereas it modestly augmented glucose-induced increase in these events. ROZ suppressed short-term palmitate-induced phosphorylation of pro-apoptotic MAPKs, i.e., SAPK/JNK and p38. Long-term islet culturing with palmitate induced inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and activated SAPK/JNK-p38. ROZ counteracted these effects. Both palmitate and cytokines activated caspase-3 in MIN6c4-cells and isolated islets. ROZ suppressed palmitate- but not cytokine-induced caspase-3 activation. Finally, after palmitate culturing, ROZ reversed the inhibitory effect on glucose-stimulated insulin release. We suggest that ROZ counteracts palmitateinduced deleterious effects on beta-cell function via suppression of iNOS, pro-apoptotic MAPKs and caspase-3 activities, as evidenced by restoration of glucose-stimulated insulin release.

  • Load Management from an Environmental Perspective
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Energy & Environment. - : SAGE Publications. - 0958-305X .- 2048-4070. ; 17:4, s. 583-601
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The key objective of this study is to discuss the possible environmental benefits of load management and evaluate their significance, primarily focusing on CO2 emissions reduction. The analysis is carried out on two levels: National – the Swedish electricity market, and local – one electric utility in southern Sweden. The results show the importance of considering the influence of site-specific or level-specific conditions on the environmental effects of load management. On the national level, load management measures can hardly provide significant environmental benefits in Sweden, due to the high hydropower production, which is the demand following production source. Emission reductions will rather be the result of energy efficiency measures, which will lower the load demand as well as the energy demand. However, when it comes to a local (utility) level, where load management is considered as an alternative to an installation of a peak diesel power plant, the benefits are clear.

  • The ATLAS TRT barrel detector
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS TRT barrel is a tracking drift chamber using 52,544 individual tubular drift tubes. It is one part of the ATLAS Inner Detector, which consists of three sub-systems: the pixel detector spanning the radius range 4 to 20 cm, the semiconductor tracker (SCT) from 30 to 52 cm, and the transition radiation tracker ( TRT) from 56 to 108 cm. The TRT barrel covers the central pseudo-rapidity region |eta| < 1, while the TRT endcaps cover the forward and backward eta regions. These TRT systems provide a combination of continuous tracking with many measurements in individual drift tubes ( or straws) and of electron identification based on transition radiation from fibers or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. This paper describes the recently-completed construction of the TRT Barrel detector, including the quality control procedures used in the fabrication of the detector.

  • The ATLAS TRT end-cap detectors
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS TRT end-cap is a tracking drift chamber using 245,760 individual tubular drift tubes. It is a part of the TRT tracker which consist of the barrel and two end-caps. The TRT end-caps cover the forward and backward pseudo-rapidity region 1.0 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.0, while the TRT barrel central eta region vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.0. The TRT system provides a combination of continuous tracking with many measurements in individual drift tubes ( or straws) and of electron identification based on transition radiation from fibers or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. Along with other two sub-systems, namely the Pixel detector and Semi Conductor Tracker (SCT), the TRT constitutes the ATLAS Inner Detector. This paper describes the recently completed and installed TRT end-cap detectors, their design, assembly, integration and the acceptance tests applied during the construction.
