    • The collector-less flotation of pyrite has been studied by conventional techniques and is correlated to the electrochemical behaviour of pyrite in alkaline solution (1m NaClO4, pH 11). It was concluded that the initial oxidation of pyrite produces a hydrophobic sulphur rich surface together with hydrophilic iron hydroxide species. Also upon grinding, the surface is covered by hydrophilic species and therefore no significant flotation was obtained in the absence of a collector. However, collectorless flotation was readily obtained in an iron complexing solution like EDTA. This indicates that the remaining sulphur-rich layer is responsible for the floatability of pyrite under these conditions.

    • A batch-grinding process treating a natural magnetite ore was simulated by a population-balance model. Different methods of determining selection and breakage functions for the ore were investigated. Grinding tests were performed with seven monosize fractions in a pilot-scale ball-mill. The back-calculated selection function was compared with experimentally measured values of the selection function, S, and the breakage functions so determined were checked against the results of the simulation. It appears that if the breakage functions of a material are not normalizable, it is necessary to carry out a sufficient number of monosize grinding tests to allow reliable selection and breakage functions to be estimated.     • This paper presents the results of batch vibration milling of mica. Grinding time or energy input, and solid and dispersant concentrations were the variables. Product fineness is greatly influenced by energy input, solid concentration, and mill settings. Muscovite can be ground efficiently to a high degree of fineness at a relatively high energy expenditure. Particle shape is preserved or improved presumably due to the predominance of exfoliation as opposed to true fracture as the mode of particle breakage.
