Romans Interpreted : A Comparative Analysis of the Commentaries of Barth, Nygren, Cranfield and Wilckens on Paul´s Epistle to the Romans

- This thesis deals with the problem of how to explain different interpretations of Paul's Epistle to the Romans in the four contemporary commentaries of Karl Barth, Anders Nygren, Charles Cranfield and Ulrich Wilckens. The purpose of this study is to put forward and analyse the different interpretations given by the commentators and to examine some ways in which these differences may be explained.The differences analysed primarily concern central theological issues. A detailed description of the four different interpretations of Romans is given on three levels: (i) concerning Romans 7, (ii) concerning some theological themes in Romans and (iii) concerning some general remarks on Romans which are important for the interpretation of the Epistle.Different kinds of interpretations are defined by the development of a theory of interpretation which focuses on the arguments supporting the commentators' choices of interpretation. The different interpretations of Romans are explained by reference to the commentators' pursuit of different combinations of kinds of interpretations and by the contents of their arguments. Explanations are also found in their pursuit of different combinations of purposes. Their views of the contents of Christian faith, revelation and the Bible also explain the different interpretations. Special attention is paid to a fundamental lack of clarity in the commentaries concerning the relation between reconstructive and constructive interpretations, the problem of application.The commentaries are used as examples of biblical interpretation to arrive at a detailed knowledge of the complex process of interpretation. Some asymptotic results in recursive identification using Laguerre models

- Frequency domain expressions for the quality of recursively identified Laguerre models are presented. These models generalize finite impulse response (FIR) models by using a priori information about the dominating time constants of the system to be identified. Expressions for the model quality are derived under the assumptions that the system varies slowly, that the model is updated slowly, and that the model order is high. The model quality is evaluated by investigating the properties of the estimated transfer function, and explicit expressions for the mean square error (MSE) of the transfer function, and explicit expressions for the mean square error of the transfer function estimate are derived.

- This paper describes a polynomial-time, O(n3), planning algorithm for a limited class of planning problems. Compared to previous work on complexity of algorithms for knowledge-based or logic-based planning, our algorithm achieves computational tractability, but at the expense of only applying to a significantly more limited class of problems. Our algorithm is proven correct and complete, and it always returns a minimal plan if there is a plan at all.

- Methods for estimating the parameters of narrowband signals arriving at an array of sensors are analyzed. Asymptotic results for several estimators have recently appeared in the literature. With few exceptions, the previous analysis requires the incident signal waveforms to be Gaussian random variables. These results are shown to be valid under much more general conditions, i.e. the actual distribution of the signal waveforms does not affect the asymptotic properties of the parameter.

- In this paper a streamline diffusion finite element method is introduced for the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domnain in R^2 and R^3 in the case of high Reynolds number flow. An error estimate is proved and numerical results are given. The method is based on a mixed velocity-pressure formulation using the same finite element discretization of space-time for the velocity and the pressure spaces, which consists of piecewise linear functions, together with certain least-squares modifications of the Galerkin variational formulation giving added stability without sacrificing accuracy.

- We extend our previous analysis of streamline diffusion finite element methods for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws to include a shock-capturing term adding artificial viscosity depending on the local absolute value of the residual of the finite element solution and the meh size. With this term present, we prove a maximum norm bound for finite element solutionsof Burgers' equation an thus complete an earlier convergence proof for this equation. We further prove, using entropy variables, that a strong limit of finite element solutions is a weak solution of the system of conservation laws and satisfies the entropy inequality asociated with the entropy variables. Results of some numerical experiments for the time-dependent compressible Euler equations in two dimensions are also reported.
