  • Quality of life among patients with restless legs syndrome : A systematic review and meta-analysis
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of clinical neuroscience. - : Elsevier. - 0967-5868 .- 1532-2653. ; 122, s. 80-91
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The primary aim was to estimate the pooled mean score of quality of life (QoL) (total, mental and physical health components) among patients with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS).Secondary aims were to assess: (I) QoL differences for RLS vs. control groups, (II) heterogeneity and possible sources; and (III) moderating variables. Methods: Studies identified in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest between January 2000 and December 2022 were included. Methodological quality was assessed with Newcastle Ottawa Scale. The protocol was pre-registered (PROSPERO, CRD42023387318).Results: Twenty-seven studies (20121 participants, 12 countries) were included. The corrected pooled estimated mean score of QoL was 47.92 (27 studies, CI 95 %: 43.11 to 52.72, range 0–100, i.e., low–high QoL) and was marginally affected by publication year (increased 0.89 by each year, p = 0.12). The corrected pooled estimated mean score of the mental health component was 47.32 (17 studies, 95 % CI: 43.12 to 51.51, range 0–100) and influenced by RLS instrument (decreased with recent versions, p = 0.05). The corrected pooled estimated mean score of the physical health component was 39.08 (17 studies, 95 % CI: 33.05 to 45.10, range 0–100), with no statistically significant moderator. The pooled estimated QoL scores were statistically significantly lower in RLS patients compared to control groups with standardized mean difference (SMD) of −0.78, −0.57 and −0.50 respectively for overall QoL (24 studies), physical and mental health components (14 studies). Total QoL SMD was affected by proportion of women. Conclusion: Low QoL was revealed among RLS patients, which was statistically significantly reduced compared to control groups.

  • Escalate shamefully, de-escalate angrily or gratefully: The influence of discrete emotions on escalation of commitment.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. - : Wiley. - 1467-9450 .- 0036-5564. ; 55:4, s. 380-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Decision makers often tend to escalate their commitment when faced with a dilemma of whether to continue a losing course of action. Researchers recently began to investigate the influence of discrete emotions on this decision tendency. However, this work has mainly focused on negative emotions and rarely considered positive emotions, to say nothing of comparing the effects of both of them simultaneously. The current study addresses this need by presenting the results of three experiments that examined the effects of four emotions of both positive and negative valences in escalation situations. Experiment 1 investigated the relationships of three trait emotions (hope, shame, and anger) and escalation of commitment. Experiments 2 and 3 examined the effects of three induced emotions (anger, shame, and gratitude) on escalation of commitment in a student sample and an employee sample, respectively. The results revealed that the effects of discrete emotions in escalation situations are mainly due to their associated differences on the appraisal dimension of responsibility that is related to escalation situations rather than their valence. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

  • Further support for the motivational explanation of self-other similarity judgment asymmetry
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Swiss Journal of Psychology. - : Hogrefe Publishing Group. - 1421-0185 .- 1662-0879. ; 76:4, s. 155-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-other similarity judgment asymmetry refers to the tendency of people to judge others to be more similar to themselves than they judge themselves to be similar to others. This effect can be explained with both a cognitive model (Tversky, 1977) and a motivational explanation (Codol, 1987). Recent research has provided initial evidence for the core assumption of the motivational explanation and tested a hypothesis that can only be derived from the motivational explanation. The present study aims to provide further evidence for the motivational explanation by testing another hypothesis derived from it that goes beyond the cognitivemodel. Our results show that participants with a strong need for uniqueness tended to exhibit self-other asymmetry, but only with respect to attributes that were difficult to falsify.

  • Monochromatic phototherapy in elderly patients: A new way of treating chronic pressure ulcers?
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Aging clinical and experimental research. - 1720-8319. ; 15:3, s. 259-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aims: Monochromatic pulsating light may have effects of importance for wound healing, and promising results were obtained in an open study on the healing of pressure ulcers, which motivated the present study. Methods: One hundred and sixty-four in- and outpatients with grade II and III ulcers were treated with monochromatic pulsating light or placebo over the ulcerated area, according to a specific therapeutic program. Results: No significant effects were observed in the total material. In a sub-analysis of grade II ulcers, there was a tendency toward better healing in the monochromatic light group (p=0.06). A significantly larger reduction in pressure ulcer size was noted among patients in the treatment group with low body weight (BMI<20). Conclusions: Monochromatic pulsating light may have effects on pressure ulcer healing, and a new study focusing only on grade II ulcers is under way. (C)2003, Editrice Kurtis

  • How do actors coordinate for value creation? : A signaling and screening perspective on resource integration
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Services Marketing. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0887-6045. ; 36:9, s. 18-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Although service research typically asserts that institutions coordinate actors' value creation processes, institutions and resources are not necessarily transparent, aligned, or pre-existing. This paper aims to develop a more granular perspective on how actors coordinate for value. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on the established concepts of signaling and screening theory, this paper adopts a service marketing perspective to explore how independent heterogeneous actors coordinate for value creation at the individual level. Illustrative cases of corporate startup collaborations are presented in support of the proposed conceptual framework. Findings Actors share and acquire information through signaling and screening activities in a coordinative dialogue with other actors. These resource integration activities (for resource creation and matching) affect actors' valuations and future actions. Originality/value The one-sided explanations of coordination in the existing literature reflect the dominance of the institutional theory. By contrast, the proposed agency-oriented perspective based on the integration of signaling and screening functions offers a more granular conceptualization of the resource integration process. As well as capturing how actors use coordinating dialogue to match resources and institutions, this account also shows that matching is a core element of resource integration rather than an antecedent. The findings indicate paths for future research that focus on the actor.

  • Laboratory Soft X-Ray Microscopy with an Integrated Visible-Light Microscope-Correlative Workflow for Faster 3D Cell Imaging
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Microscopy and Microanalysis. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 1431-9276 .- 1435-8115. ; 26:6, s. 1124-1132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Laboratory transmission soft X-ray microscopy (L-TXM) has emerged as a complementary tool to synchrotron-based TXM and high-resolution biomedical 3D imaging in general in recent years. However, two major operational challenges in L-TXM still need to be addressed: a small field of view and a potentially misaligned rotation stage. As it is not possible to alter the magnification during operation, the field of view in L-TXM is usually limited to a few tens of micrometers. This complicates locating areas and objects of interest in the sample. Additionally, if the rotation axis of the sample stage cannot be adjusted prior to the experiments, an efficient workflow for tomographic imaging cannot be established, as refocusing and sample repositioning will become necessary after each recorded projection. Both these limitations have been overcome with the integration of a visible-light microscope (VLM) into the L-TXM system. Here, we describe the calibration procedure of the goniometer sample stage and the integrated VLM and present the resulting 3D imaging of a test sample. In addition, utilizing this newly integrated VLM, the extracellular matrix of cryofixed THP-1 cells (human acute monocytic leukemia cells) was visualized by L-TXM for the first time in the context of an ongoing biomedical research project.

  • Den nationella svenska rapporten: Akademiker och tillväxt i Sverige
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this report is to identify the role of academics as entrepreneurs. Education and a highly educated staff is a growth factor in companies and in this report we will highlight the characteristics of companies established by academics and which factors are crucial for these companies to grow. A special focus has been whether academics organise their companies in a particular way – a way that we may expect will become more common in our knowledge society. Comparing the three Nordic countries has been challenging. In spite of the differences of size between the three Nordic countries the number of entrepreneurs is remarkably similar, with a slight overweight of entrepreneurs in Norway. In the report we focus on entrepreneurs and growth entrepreneurs with a tertiary education. In Denmark we define tertiary education as a university master degree, based on five years of university study. In Norway we define tertiary education as a master degree or equivalent, based on more than four years of university study. In Sweden we define a tertiary education as three years of university study or more than three years. The university studies vary depending on the study subject. In order to be able to compare the data from the three countries we use the definition four years or more in the chapter comparing data from the three national studies. The statistic data in the report is based on figures on academic entrepreneurs starting their company in 2004 and following the development in the number of entrepreneurs until 2008. Growth entrepreneurs are defined as entrepreneurs starting a company in 2004 and having experienced an average yearly growth of 20 pct in the number of employees from ultimo November until ultimo November 2008.
