  • Evolution of university-industry collaboration at Chalmers University of Technology
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: University-Industry Interaction Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to investigate the interaction of Chalmers University of Technology (henceforth Chalmers) with industry from the 1990s and onwards. It is part of an ongoing research project that critically analyses how and why new engineering knowledge and networks resulting from university-industry collaboration (UIC) affect the development of capabilities in firms, in different sectors in Sweden.

  • Academic Patenting in Europe: Evidence on France, Italy from the KEINS database
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Research Evaluation. ; 17:2 (June), s. 16-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper provides summary statistics from the KEINS database on academic patenting in France,Italy, and Sweden. It shows that academic scientists in those countries have signed many more patentsthan previously estimated. This re-evaluation of academic patenting comes by considering all patentssigned by academic scientists active in 2004, both those assigned to universities and the many moreheld by business companies, governmental organizations, and public laboratories. Specific institutionalfeatures of the university and research systems in the three countries contribute to explaining theseownership patterns, which are remarkably different from those observed in the USA. In the light ofthese new data, European universities’ contribution to domestic patenting appears not to be much lessintense than that of their US counterparts.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter asks whether national institutions determine patenting behaviour of academics located in three different European countries. The chapter uses the CESPRI database on EPO patents, in connection with cleaned patent data, and gathered by researcher, for each of the three countries over the period 1978 to 2004. We would expect differing national institutions affect propensity to patent. However, the results indicate that the patenting patterns are similar across the countries, and also within scientific disciplines across countries. Comparisons are made with evidence from the USA, indicating similar levels of academic patenting and firm involvement. The chapter thus focuses upon the patenting of academics at the individual level, and uses that data to describe the patenting behaviour in terms of countries and disciplines.

  • Academic Inventors, Technological Profiles and Patent Value: An Analysis of Academic Patents owned by Swedish-based firms
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Industry and Innovation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1366-2716 .- 1469-8390. ; 20:5, s. 437-487
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the relationship between academic inventors and firms, focusing on the relation between academic inventors, the technological profiles of firms and patent value. In particular, this paper focuses on the value of academic patents as compared to non-academic patents, owned by large firms based in Sweden. One finding is that academic patents have a short-term disadvantage, which disappears in the long-term. Our results also indicate that controlling for whether the patent belongs to a core or non-core technology relative to the firm’s technological profile neutralizes the premium of non-academic patents. In other words, patents belonging to firms’ core technologies have significantly higher value, regardless of whether they are academic or non-academic patents. The above results indicate that the technological profile of firms is an important characteristic to analyze, when examining the value of academic patents and the specific role that academics play in industrial invention.

  • Academic involvement in firm patenting: A study of firms’ academic patents in Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Druid Summer Conference London.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the characteristics and impact of academic involvement in industrial invention processes by comparing firms partly university-invented patents, so-called academic patents , with their non-academic patents. In contrast to previous research that studies university-owned patents, this approach allows us to analyze the relative contribution, in terms of patent importance, of academics to industrial inventions. The empirical analysis in this paper is based on a database of Swedish academic patents. Our results indicate that academic involvement mainly takes place in inventions highly related to the technology base, where firms have high existing competencies and much experience. Moreover, in marginal technological fields, academic patents seem to be associated with higher probability of novelty and higher technological impact as compared to non-academic patents. In contrast, academic patents in core technological fields are associated with lower technological impact.

  • Collaboration Strategies in University-Industry Relationships for Entrepreneurial Ventures
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: AEGIS Deliverables and Report Series.
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper focuses upon knowledge intensive entrepreneurial ventures, and why they interact with universities. The focus is upon a broad framework of understanding. These types of firms are highly dependent upon scientific and technological knowledge. Previous research has primarily focused upon the start-up phase, that is, when the company starts. This paper focuses upon the continuing interactiosn between small firms and university-industry centers

  • Creating Innovative Opportunities: Lessons from Case Studies in Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The 10th GLOBELICS International Conference, November 9-11, Hangzhou, China.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper develops lessons about how and why the founders and ventures involved in knowledge intensive entrepreneurship (KIE) manage the process of venture creation. The purpose of this paper is to develop lessons and insights into KIE. They are based upon as conceptual model (from a systemic literature review), linked to illustrations of the processes, and an analysis of 86 case studies in knowledge intensive entrepreneurship in Europe. These case studies were developed during the European Union research project AEGIS (Advancing Knowledge-Intensive Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Economic Growth and Well-being in Europe). The case studies are conducted at the firm-level. Hence, we do not here include case studies focusing on levels such as regions and sectors, which are rich but raise and address topics processes and variables than the foci of this paper. Nevertheless, most all case studies do demonstrate how the individual KIE ventures are dependent upon variables and processes in the surrounding innovation systems. The overall analysis of the cases also provides insights into how innovative opportunities merge and are developed through KIE processes, highlighting e.g. the importance of networks.
