  • Visual ergonomics interventions in mail sorting facilities
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Work. - 1051-9815 .- 1875-9270. ; 41:1, s. 3433-3437
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study was performed between 2004 and 2011 at mail sorting facilities in Sweden. During this time, different interventions were performed. The first was a lighting intervention that had a positive impact on the postal workers, especially those with eyestrain. A new lighting system also improved the illuminance and gave better light distribution. The second intervention involved new personal spectacles for the postal workers who needed them and this had a positive effect on eyestrain. The third intervention involved a specific type of sorting spectacles for the postal workers who already used progressive lenses privately. The reading distances that the postal workers had while sorting the mail was inverted to the distances in their regular progressive lenses. The new sorting spectacles had a positive effect on head postures and on muscular activity.

  • Working spectacles for sorting mail
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Work. - 1051-9815 .- 1875-9270. ; 47:3, s. 319-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Sorting mail into racks for postmen is visually demanding work. This can result in backward inclination of their heads, especially more pronounced for those who use progressive addition lenses. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of customized working spectacles on the physical workload of postmen. METHODS: Twelve male postmen sorted mail on two occasions: once using their private progressive spectacles and once using customized sorting spectacles with inverted progressive lenses. Postures and movements of the head, upper back, neck, and upper arms were measured by inclinometry. The muscular load of the trapezius was measured by surface electromyography. RESULTS: With the customized sorting spectacles, both the backward inclination of the head and backward flexion of the neck were reduced (3 degrees), as well as the muscular load of the right upper trapezius, compared to sorting with private spectacles. However, with the sorting spectacles, there was a tendency for increased neck forward flexion, and increased sorting time. CONCLUSION: The reduction in work load may reduce the risk for developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders due to the positive reduction of the backward inclination of the head. But the tendency for increased neck forward flexion may reduce the positive effects. However, the magnitude of the possible reduction is difficult to predict, especially since quantitative data on exposure-response relationships are unknown. Alternative working spectacles with inverted near progressive lenses ought to be evaluated. They should still result in a positive reduced backward inclination of the head and may not cause any increased forward flexion.

  • Urban-rural population changes and spatial inequalities in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Regional Science Policy and Practice. - : Wiley. - 1757-7802. ; 15:4, s. 878-892
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper documents regional population changes in Sweden since 1860 and investigates how these changes link to regional economic development (regional GDP). We combine long-term decade population data for the historical counties (1860-2020) with detailed annual population observations for municipalities (1968-2021). As industrialization picked up speed, this benefited regions all around the country in terms of production, at the same time as regional population patterns started to diverge. After a slowdown in the regional GDP convergence processes during the low-growth period of the 1980s, 'double divergence,' in both population and regional GDP per capita, has characterized Swedish growth patterns since the 1990s.

  • Socio-technical IS design science research : developing design theory for IS integration management
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Information Systems and E-Business Management. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1617-9846 .- 1617-9854. ; 9:1, s. 109-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design science research is an essential part of IS research since the field should not only try to understand how the world is, but also how to change it. We argue that the aim of IS design science research should be to develop practical knowledge not only for the design of novel information technology (IT), but also for IS governance and management. Whereas at least some methodological support exists for researchers engaged in IT-centric design science research, limited support is available for researchers who want to develop design knowledge and theory for IS governance and management. To overcome this shortcoming, we suggest a socio-technical IS design science research approach. The approach has four main activities: (1) identifying problem situations and desired outcomes, (2) reviewing extant theories, knowledge and data, (3) proposing/refining design theory and knowledge, and (4) testing design theory and knowledge. The applicability and usefulness of the proposed approach is shown by means of a design science research project concerning IS integration management in the context of mergers and acquisitions.

  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines the concept of travel habits, public responses to large-scale traffic congestion regulations and how travel patterns of urban dwellers can be made environmentally sustainable in the long term. It also examines the interrelationships of different scientific disciplines dealing with urban travel. The main conclusions relate to the scientific concept of habit. This concept and the associated behaviours are not well-studied in the social and cultural sciences. Indeed, in some contexts the concept is bereft of meaning, e.g. when the notion of travel habits is used to represent the travel patterns of an entire population. This study demonstrated the (traffic and environmental policy) significance of non-habitual travel, but also showed habitual travel to have inherent resistance to change, i.e. with habits acting as a buffer between experience and response. Case studies revealed travel habits to be a cultural phenomenon, since acceptable travel habits are expressed in a restricted local and social context. People develop their (travel) habits in mutual and only partly conscious interactions with each other and their material surroundings. The case studies also showed how changes occurring during critical points in the course of a life (primarily as regards housing, employment and household composition) brought about particularly clear changes in individual travel habits. Stability and sustainability in urban travel patterns could be achieved through the promotion and gradual spread (geographical, between age classes, etc.) of certain types of travel habits that are already in use at the individual level. Thus habits should be regarded less as an obstacle and more as an opportunity for sustainable development. A case study of the Stockholm congestion charge trial showed wide variation and ingenuity in how Stockholmers dealt with this new feature of their daily lives. For example, many stopped many stopped driving into the charging zone in order to demonstrate, to themselves and others, their disagreement with the charge and the political circumstances surrounding its introduction. Interestingly (and paradoxically), this probably contributed to the overall major reduction in traffic, perceived at a societal level as evidence of the success of congestion charging. However, regarding the scope for sustainable development of urban travel, the conclusion from this appraisal of the Stockholm trial was that environmental, congestion-reducing and possibly traffic-controlling political measures appear to be in public demand. Efforts in this thesis to interrelate the scientific perspectives of the different disciplines studying the various levels of urban travel (e.g. sociology, human geography and ethnology in relation to transport economics and psychology) indicated that further collaboration is required. As with the concept of travel habits, there are numerous concepts that could benefit from being developed and tested through interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • High nuclear RBM3 expression is associated with an improved prognosis in colorectal cancer
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proteomics Clinical Applications. - : Wiley. - 1862-8354 .- 1862-8346. ; 5:11-12, s. 624-635
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: In this study, we investigated the prognostic impact of human RBM3 expression in colorectal cancer using tissue microarray-based immunohistochemical analysis. Experimental design: One polyclonal antibody and four monoclonal anti-RBM3 antibodies were generated and epitope mapped using two different methods. Bacterial display revealed five distinct epitopes for the polydonal antibody, while the four mouse monoclonal antibodies were found to bind to three of the five epitopes. A peptide suspension bead array assay confirmed the five epitopes of the polydonal antibody, while only one of the monoclonal antibodies could be mapped using this approach. Antibody specificity was confirmed by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry, including siRNA-mediated knock-down. Two of the antibodies (polydonal and monoclonal) were subsequently used to analyze RBM3 expression in tumor samples from two independent colorectal cancer cohorts, one consecutive cohort (n = 270) and one prospectively collected cohort of patients with cancer of the sigmoid colon (n = 305). RBM3-expression was detected, with high correlation between both antibodies (R = 0.81, p < 0.001). Results: In both cohorts, tumors with high nuclear RBM3 staining had significantly prolonged the overall survival. This was also confirmed in multivariate analysis, adjusted for established prognostic factors. Conclusion and clinical relevance: These data demonstrate that high tumor-specific nuclear expression of RBM3 is an independent predictor of good prognosis in colorectal cancer.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Computational Biology. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 1066-5277 .- 1557-8666. ; 13:4, s. 853-865
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chromosomal aberrations in solid tumors appear in complex patterns. It is important to understand how these patterns develop, the dynamics of the process, the temporal or even causal order between aberrations, and the involved pathways. Here we present network models for chromosomal aberrations and algorithms for training models based on observed data. Our models are generative probabilistic models that can be used to study dynamical aspects of chromosomal evolution in cancer cells. They are well suited for a graphical representation that conveys the pathways found in a dataset. By allowing only pairwise dependencies and partition aberrations into modules, in which all aberrations are restricted to have the same dependencies, we reduce the number of parameters so that datasets sizes relevant to cancer applications can be handled. We apply our framework to a dataset of colorectal cancer tumor karyotypes. The obtained model explains the data significantly better than a model where independence between the aberrations is assumed. In fact, the obtained model performs very well with respect to several measures of goodness of fit and is, with respect to repetition of the training, more or less unique.

  • A multi-perspective method for gear efficiency and contact analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Results in Engineering (RINENG). - : Elsevier BV. - 2590-1230. ; 20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern gearing applications, in particular electrification, impose new challenges in many different fields of engineering and research. In specific, new demands are imposed on gears, including higher rotational speed, lower noise acceptance, and increased efficiency, as well as increased resistance against pitting and scuffing. To meet these demands, a better understanding of gear contacts is needed. The Eurostars project Effigears proposes a novel multi-perspective methodology for assessment of gear efficiency and contact analysis. The methodology consists of using a novel surface treatment method, Triboconditioning (R), implemented in a streamfinishing process, surface measurements using a scattered light method, experimental testing using the standardized FZG test rig, and contact simulations using a novel thermal elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication tool. It is found, in preliminary tests, that enhanced gear performance may be enhanced due to Triboconditioning (R) surface treat-ment. Findings also include better understanding of how surface characteristics and lubricants affect scuffing and pitting, and the effect of load distribution on gearset behavior.
