Migrant Agricultural Workers and Their Socio-‐economic, Occupational and Health Conditions– A Literature Review

- Objective This study provides the summary of current knowledge about migrant work in agriculture available from journal articles, books, reports and other relevant academic publications, focusing on political, economic, legal, social and medical aspects of migrant work in agriculture. Methods A systematic search was carried out on the LibHub and Google Scholar databases in order to compile the existing peer-reviewed publications, research reports, and policy papers concerning migrant work in agriculture. The literatures was selected through the following process: (1) reading the title and abstract in English for the period 1960 – 2011; (2) reading the entire text of selected articles; (3) making a manual search of the relevant quotations in the selected articles; (4) eliminating articles without a focus on migrant populations and the themes of central interest, and then reading and analyzing the definitive set of articles. Results In spite of their varying geographical focus, scope, unit of analysis and settings, most of the studies reviewed highlighted that migrant farmworkers work under very poor working conditions and face numerous health and safety hazards, including occupational chemical and ergonomic exposures, various injuries and illnesses and even death, discrimination and social exclusion, poor pay and long working hours, and language and cultural barriers. Many studies also reported poor enforcement of labour regulations and a lack of health and safety training on the farms, difficulty accessing medical care and compensation when injured or ill. Conclusions The studies have also pointed out the lack of research in relation to labour, health, psychosocial, and wage conditions of migrant farmworkers. The accumulated results of the study indicate that the issues and problems migrant farmworkers face are multidimensional, and there is a need for both policy development and further research in order to address migrant workers’ problems.

- Globalisering, ny teknologi och demografiska förändringar innebär genomgripande förändringar av arbetsmiljö och arbetsorganisation. Om arbetsmiljöpolitiken då inte är tydlig och viljeinriktad finns en påtaglig risk för ett polariserat arbetsliv, där de som kan välja mellan olika arbetsgivare får en god och utvecklande arbetsmiljö, medan de andra riskerar att bli hänvisade till förhållanden där inte ens arbetsmiljölagens minimikrav efterlevs. Det snedvrider konkurrensen, och ger negativa spiraler vad gäller arbetsmiljö, arbetsrelaterad ohälsa och gap i hälsa mellan olika grupper i samhället.

- The fact that the debate concerning copyright in a digital society has been both intense and filled with polemic conflicts ever since the late 1990s makes it clear that it is a most complicated issue to solve, or even grasp. Basically, both the legal and societal discussion and development are explicitly dependent on a greater understanding of the on-going processes surrounding copyright. This presents a well-suited point of departure for research such as the one conducted within the Cybernorms research group – both in terms of providing valuable insights into the field of sociology of law when it comes to understanding how to relate to the framework provided by digitalization in general and the Internet in particular, and in terms of providing more accurate knowledge and toolsets to legislators in related fields.

- New records, range extensions and nomenclatural innovations for lichens and lichenicolous fungi from Alaska, U.S.A. - Herzogia 25: 177-210. Surveys of lichens and lichenicolous fungi have been taking place in the U.S. state of Alaska for more than 160 years, but until now assessing the full extent of their diversity has been hampered by the lack of a comprehensive and synonymized baseline inventory. In this paper we will begin to redress this by resolving outstanding nomenclatural issues and providing voucher data for a forthcoming catalog of Alaskan lichens, specifically: 1) synonymization,and/or resolution of status of species previously reported from Alaska, with emphasis on Alaskan types; 2) species new to the Alaska lichen biota; and 3) biogeographically significant new records from within Alaska. We report 91 species new to the flora of Alaska, including 65 lichens, three saprophytic calicioid fungi and 23 lichenicolous fungi. Of these, we report thirteen species, Biatora sphaeroidiza, Biatorella conspurcans, Chaenothecopsis arthoniae, Collemopsidium foveolatum, Dactylospora frigida, Halospora discrepans, Lecanora bryopsora, Opegrapha geographicola, Peltigera lyngei, Petractis clausa, Protoblastenia cyclospora, Thelocarpon impressellum and Usnea cylindrica as new to North America. In addition, Arthonia pruinata and Flavocetraria minuscula are new to Canada and Adelococcus alpestris new to the United States. We further place the following five names into synonymy: Lecania disceptans (Nyl.) Lynge [= Halecania alpivaga (Th.Fr.) M.Mayrhofer], Lecidea pallidella Nyl. [= Lecania subfuscula (Nyl.) S.Ekman], Lempholemma triptodes (Nyl.) Zahlbr. Leciophysma finmarkicum Th.Fr.), Polyblastia obtenta (Nyl.) Lynge [= Sporodictyon terrestre (Th.Fr.) S.Savic & Tibell], and Verrucaria pernigrata Nyl. [= Protothelenella sphinctrinoides (Nyl.) H.Mayrhofer & Poelt]. We propose restoring the long overlooked taxon Polyblastia exalbida (Nyl.) Zahlbr., currently known only from Alaska, to the North American lichen checklist. Finally, we propose the new combination Puttea caesia (Fr.) M.Svensson & T.Sprib. to replace Lecidea symmictella Nyl., which becomes a synonym.

- Rhaphidicyrtis trichosporella (Nyl.) Vain. is reported here as new to Sweden from five sites in the southernmost part of the country, two in the province of Skåne and three in Småland. All sites are deciduous woodlands of different composition, but most likely with a long ecological continuity. Two records are from scaling bark of Alnus glutinosa in Alnus swamps, two from hard and smooth bark of Fagus sylvatica in shady and humid Fagus forests, and one from the shallow furrows of a young Quercus robur in a semi-open woodland dominated by Quercus and Tilia.

Halk- och fallolyckor, friktionskrav och balansförmåga

- Syftet med detta projekt var att studera samspelet mellan friktion, balansförmåga och halkrisker, samt att ta fram designrekommendationer för friktionskrav och halksäkrare skor och underlag. Sex studier har utförts innefattande friktionsmätningar av skor på olika underlag och temperaturer, studier av stående balans och gång på ramp med justerbar lutning samt fokusgruppintervjuer. Resultaten visar att vid arbete i rumstemperatur på våta klinkergolv bör skosulor av polyuretan användas då de ger högre friktion, utomhus på isigt underlag bör skor med gummi eller latexsulor användas. Oavsett skosulans material och mönster hade alla testade skor utom de dubbade mycket låg friktion på is med vatten. Mjukare material på skosulor bör användas i kyla. Stående tester på plan eller lutande balansplatta med två ytmaterial, takpapp och halt underlag, visade att mer friktion utnyttjades då underlaget lutades. Både underlagets lutning och friktion påverkade balansförmågan. Alla förändringar var tydligare för det hala underlaget, låg friktion är en riskfaktor för att tappa balansen, inte bara vid gång utan också vid stående arbete. Intervjuerstudien visade att upplevda halkrisker var relaterade till hala och lutande underlag och/eller våta eller snöiga skor. Kriterier för en halkfri vintersko var flexibilitet, komfort, multifunktionalitet, ergonomiskt design, individuell anpassning, stabilitet och gångsäkerhet samt anpassning till arbetssituation. Samband mellan friktionskrav och halkrisk på en ramp med olika lutningsvinklar och ytmaterial visade att ju högre lutningsvinkel, dess högre halkrisk och högre friktionskrav vid gång nedåt på både torr och våt stålplåt. Vått underlag och högre grad av lutning bör undvikas. Ett linjärt förhållande har identifierats mellan friktionskrav och lutningsvinkel, där friktionskrav för olika lutningsvinklar kan förutsägas. Ny kunskap om prevention av halk- och fallolyckor, utformning av halksäkrare skor och arbetsplatser har erhållits i projektet.
