  • Combined membrane filtration and enzymatic treatment for recovery of high molecular mass hemicelluloses from chemithermomechanical pulp process water

    • Hemicelluloses with high molecular mass are needed for the manufacture of value added products such as food packaging barrier films. In this work such molecules were recovered from chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) process water using an innovative three-stage process comprising membrane separation and enzymatic treatment with laccase. Microfiltration followed by ultrafiltration was found to be a suitable combination in the first stage, providing a concentrated and purified hemicellulose fraction suitable for enzymatic treatment. In both membrane processes a high average flux (260 and 115 l/m(2) h) and a low fouling tendency were observed. A marked increase in the average molecular mass of hemicelluloses with bound lignin moieties was achieved by laccase treatment in the second stage. The enzymatically crosslinked hemicelluloses were finally recovered in the third stage using ultrafiltration. In the final high molecular mass solution the hemicellulose concentration was 54 g/l, the contribution of hemicelluloses to the total solids content 43%, and the viscosity of the solution 27 mPa s. The results demonstrate that a hemicellulose fraction of high quality can be produced from CTMP process water, and that this could constitute a suitable feedstock for the production of, for example, barrier films for renewable packaging.

  • Soft-x-ray spectroscopic investigation of ferromagnetic Co-doped ZnO

    • The electronic properties of cobalt-doped ZnO were investigated through site-selective and element-sensitive x-ray-absorption spectroscopy in the vicinity of the Co L-2,L-3 edge, the oxygen K edge, and at the Zn L-3 edge. The spectroscopic measurements of the ferromagnetic cobalt-doped ZnO films appear to have additional components in the O K edge x-ray-absorption spectrum not observed in the undoped films. The observed features may derive from both hybridization with unoccupied Co 3d states and also from lattice defects such as oxygen vacancies. Only minor changes in the Zn L-3 edge spectra were observed. These observations are consistent with a polaron percolation model in which the ferromagnetic coupling is mediated by shallow donor electrons trapped in oxygen vacancies and couples the Co atoms substituted on Zn sites in the hexagonal wurtzite ZnO structure.

  • Changes in the hierarchical protein polymer structure : Urea and temperature effects on wheat gluten films

    • Understanding bio-based protein polymer structures is important when designing new materials with desirable properties. Here the effect of urea on the wheat gluten (WG) protein structure in WG-urea films was investigated. Small-angle X-ray scattering indicated the formation of a hexagonal close-packed (HCP) hierarchical structure in the WG-urea materials. The HCP structure was influenced significantly by the urea concentration and processing conditions. The interdomain distance d I between the HCP scattering objects increased with increasing content of urea and the objects seemed to be oriented in the extrusion direction. Additionally, the effect of temperature on the HCP structure was studied and it was shown that at ≥55°C the HCP structure disappeared. Transmission electron microscopy revealed a rather denatured pattern of both HMW-glutenins and gliadins in the WG-urea films. The molecular packing of the WG protein polymer can be highly affected by an additive and the processing method used.

  • Gluten Biopolymer and Nanoclay-Derived Structures in Wheat Gluten-Urea-Clay Composites: Relation to Barrier and Mechanical Properties

    • Here, we investigated the structure of natural montmorillonite (MMT) and modified Cloisite C15A (MMT pre-intercalated with a dimethyl-dehydrogenated tallow quaternary ammonium surfactant) nanoclays in the wheat gluten-urea matrix in order to obtain a nanocomposite with improved barrier and mechanical properties. Small-angle X-ray scattering indicated that the characteristic hexagonal closed packed structure of the wheat gluten-urea matrix was not found in the CISA system and existed only in the 3 and 5 wt % MMT composites. SAXS/WAXS, TGA, and water vapor/oxygen barrier properties indicated that the dispersion of the C15A clay was somewhat better than the natural MMT clay. Confocal laser scanning microscopy showed MMT clay clusters and C15A clay particles dispersed in the protein matrix, and these were preferentially oriented in the extrusion direction only at 5 wt % of the CIS clay. The water vapor/oxygen barrier properties were improved with the presence of clay. Independent of the clay content used, the stiffness decreased and the extensibility increased in the presence of C15A due to the surfactant induced changes on the protein. The opposite "more expected" clay effect (increasing stiffness and decreasing extensibility) was observed for the MMT composites.

  • Monitoring Nanostructure Dynamics and Polymerization in Glycerol Plasticized Wheat Gliadin and Glutenin Films : Relation to Mechanical Properties

    • Gliadin and glutenin proteins with 10, 20, 30 and 40% of glycerol were compression molded into films (130 °C) and evaluated for protein polymerization, β-sheet structure and nano-structural morphology. Here, for the first time we show how different amounts of glycerol impact the nano-structure and functional properties of the gliadin and glutenin films. Most polymerized protein was found in the gliadin films with 20 and 30% glycerol, and in all the glutenin films (except 10%), by RP-HPLC. A β-sheet-rich protein structure was found to be high in the 10 and 20% glycerol gliadin films, and in the 20 and 30% glycerol glutenin films by FT-IR. Glycerol content of 20, 30 and 40% impacted the nano-structural morphology of the gliadin glycerol films observed by SAXS, and to a limited extent for 10 and 20% glycerol gliadin films revealed by WAXS. No ordered nano-structure was found for the glutenin glycerol films. The 20%, 30% and 40% glycerol films were the most tunable for specific mechanical properties. For the highest stiffness and strength, the 10% glycerol protein films were the best choice.

    • Evaluation of structure and morphology of extruded wheat gluten (WG) films showed WG protein assemblies elucidated on a range of length scales from nano (4.4 angstrom and 9 to 10 angstrom, up to 70 angstrom) to micro (10 mu m). The presence of NaOH in WG films induced a tetragonal structure with unit cell parameters, a = 51.85 angstrom and c = 40.65 angstrom, whereas NH4OH resulted in a bidimensional hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure with a lattice parameter of 70 angstrom. In the WG films with NH4OH, a highly polymerized protein pattern with intimately mixed glutenins and gliadins bounded through SH/SS interchange reactions was found. A large content of beta-sheet structures was also found in these films, and the film structure was oriented in the extrusion direction. In conclusion, this study highlights complexities of the supramolecular structures and conformations of wheat gluten polymeric proteins in biofilms not previously reported for biobased materials.

  • Vibrational wavepacket dynamics in Fe carbene photosensitizer determined with femtosecond X-ray emission and scattering

    • The non-equilibrium dynamics of electrons and nuclei govern the function of photoactive materials. Disentangling these dynamics remains a critical goal for understanding photoactive materials. Here we investigate the photoinduced dynamics of the [Fe(bmip)2]2+ photosensitizer, where bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1-ylidine)-pyridine, with simultaneous femtosecond-resolution Fe Kα and Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and X-ray solution scattering (XSS). This measurement shows temporal oscillations in the XES and XSS difference signals with the same 278 fs period oscillation. These oscillations originate from an Fe-ligand stretching vibrational wavepacket on a triplet metal-centered (3MC) excited state surface. This 3MC state is populated with a 110 fs time constant by 40% of the excited molecules while the rest relax to a 3MLCT excited state. The sensitivity of the Kα XES to molecular structure results from a 0.7% average Fe-ligand bond length shift between the 1 s and 2p core-ionized states surfaces.

  • Sustainable metal working fluid systems : Best and common practices for metal working fluid maintenance and system design in Swedish industry

    • This paper investigates the function of metal working fluid (MWF) emulsions in automotive industries in Sweden and looks at how the negative environmental and health impact of their use can be reduced through means of monitoring and system design. Major input to this study has been collected from several of the large companies in Sweden, through a literature review, interviews, questionnaires, findings from workshops and comparisons with other countries. The mapping of this data was carried out, firstly by defining several concepts and terms related to MWFs in order to give an unambiguous terminology. The MWF system design, with its impact on economical, environmental and health and safety parameters, is then described more in detail. Finally, applied monitoring methodologies are reviewed and analysed in terms of common and best practices. Insights gained were formulated as general recommendations for designing a state-of-the-art sustainable MWF system. The article gives examples of how these recommendations translate into practical design features and requirements of monitoring, and maybe of interest for professionals and researchers working with machining technology, process fluid system design and control methodology.

  • Odd-frequency superconductivity near a magnetic impurity in a conventional superconductor

    • Superconductor-ferromagnetic heterostructures have been suggested as one of the most promising alternatives of realizing odd-frequency superconductivity. In this work we consider the limit of shrinking the ferromagnetic region to the limit of a single impurity embedded in a conventional superconductor, which gives rise to localized Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states with energies inside the superconducting gap. We demonstrate that all the sufficient ingredients for generating odd-frequency pairing are present at the vicinity of these impurities. We investigate the appearance of all possible pair amplitudes in accordance with the Berezinskii SP* OT * = -1 rule, with the symmetry under the exchange of spin, spatial, orbital (in our case O = +1), and time index, respectively. We study the spatial and frequency dependence of the possible pairing amplitudes, analyzing their evolution with impurity strength and identifying a reciprocity between different symmetries related through impurity scattering. We show that the odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing amplitude dominates at the critical impurity strength, where the YSR states merge at the middle of the gap, while the even components are quenched close to the impurity. We also show that the spin-polarized local density of states exhibits the same spatial and frequency behavior as the odd-co spin-triplet component at the critical impurity strength.

  • Persistent current noise in narrow Josephson junctions

    • Josephson junctions have broad applications in metrology, quantum information processing, and remote sensing. For these applications, the electronic noise is a limiting factor. In this work we study the thermal noise in narrow Josephson junctions using a tight-binding Hamiltonian. For a junction longer than the superconducting coherence length, several self-consistent gap profiles appear close to a phase difference pi. They correspond to two stable solutions with an approximately constant phase gradient over the thin superconductor connected by a 2 pi phase slip, and a solitonic branch. The current noise power spectrum has pronounced peaks at the transition frequencies between the different states in each branch. We find that the noise is reduced in the gradient branches in comparison to the zero-length junction limit. In contrast, the solitonic branch exhibits an enhanced noise and a reduced current due to the pinning of the lowest excitation energy to close to zero energy.
