  • Random telegraph noise in carbon nanotubes and peapods
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Current Applied Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1567-1739. ; 6, s. 987-991
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The switching of resistance between two discrete values, known as random telegraph noise (RTN), was observed in individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and C60-filled SWNTs (the so-called peapods). The RTN has been studied as a function of bias-voltage and gate-voltage as well as temperature. By analyzing the features of the RTN, we identify three different types of RTN existing in the SWNT related systems. While the RTN can be generated by the various charge traps in the vicinity of the SWNTs, the RTN for metallic SWNTs is mainly due to reversible defect motions between two metastable states, activated by inelastic scattering with ballistic electrons. On the other hand, the noise for peapods can be attributed to the motion of C60 molecules in hollow space of SWNTs.

  • Anisotropic hot electron emission from fullerenes
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 136:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoelectron spectra for fullerenes C-60 and C-70 ionized using 800 nm laser pulses with pulse durations from 120 to 1000 fs show thermal electron kinetic energy distributions but they also exhibit angular anisotropy with respect to the laser light polarization. The effective temperature of electrons, measured along the laser polarization direction, is significantly higher than in the perpendicular direction. We explain this observation by considering that the emission of the thermal electrons is uncorrelated with the phase of the laser pulse, unlike directly ionized electrons, and, depending on the time of emission, they may experience an additional "kick" from the vector potential of the laser field when they are emitted from the molecule. • DC plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition growth of carbon nanotubes and nanofibres: in situ spectroscopy and plasma current dependence
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0947-8396 .- 1432-0630. ; 88, s. 261-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dc plasma-enhanced CVD growth of nanotubes and nanofibres is studied as a function of plasma power (3–40 W). The dependence of the nanotube/nanofibre morphology for growth on thin iron films and lithographically prepared individual nickel dots is investigated. In both cases, large differences in the morphology of the carbon nanostructures are observed as the plasma power is changed. In situ optical emission spectroscopy is used to obtain insight into the important parameters affecting the growth. The best growth results are found for intermediate plasma powers (15 W).

  • In situ growth rate measurements during plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition of vertically aligned multiwall carbon nanotube films
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In situ laser reflectivity measurements are used to monitor the growth of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) films grown by DC plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) from an iron catalyst film deposited on a silicon wafer. In contrast to thermal CVD growth, there is no initial increase in the growth rate; instead, the initial growth rate is high (as much as 10 µm min-1) and then drops off rapidly to reach a steady level (2 µm min-1) for times beyond 1 min. We show that a limiting factor for growing thick films of multiwalled nanotubes (MWNTs) using PECVD can be the formation of an amorphous carbon layer at the top of the growing nanotubes. In situ reflectivity measurements provide a convenient technique for detecting the onset of the growth of this layer.

  • Fabrication of individual, vertically aligned carbon nanofibres on metal substrates from prefabricated catalyst dots
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 17:3, s. 790-794
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carbon nanofibres (CNFs) of controlled diameter and length were grown on different metal substrates using plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD). The diameter control of catalyst dots (and hence CNF diameter) was obtained by using the shot modulation technique in electron beam lithography. Catalyst dots of different sizes within arrays of different pitch were prepared and the dependence of the growth of vertically aligned CNFs on these parameters was studied for different metal underlayers. Good quality vertically aligned CNFs with a narrow length distribution were grown on Mo and W substrates. The structures grown on Nb substrates were significantly shorter for identical growth conditions and showed a lower nucleation rate. We demonstrate that through the shot modulation technique it is possible to control the diameter variation of CNFs from a single design geometry for the catalyst deposition. Individual VACNFs can be grown down to a pitch within the range 100–500 nm.

  • Plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition growth of carbon nanotubes on different metal underlayers
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 16, s. 458-466
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One important requirement for future applications of carbon nanotube electronic devices is the ability to controllably grow carbon nanotubes on metal electrodes. Here we show that it is possible to grow small diameter (<10 nm) vertically aligned carbon nanotubes on different metal underlayers using plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition. A crucial component is the insertion of a thin silicon layer between the metal and the catalyst particle. The electrical integrity of the metal electrode layer after plasma treatment and the quality of the metals as interconnects are also investigated.

  • Electrical transport measurement of molecular device fabricated by electrochemical deposition of platinum electrode
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090. ; 499, s. 196-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrical properties of 1,4-benzenedimethanethiol are measured using the electrochemically deposited platinum electrode as one of contact lead to the molecule. Temperature dependence of current-voltage characteristics were measured from room temperature to 27 K. Fowler–Nordheim type tunneling conduction below 40 K and current fluctuation at low temperature were observed. The fluctuating behavior can be understood as electromigration and/or thermal vibration of platinum atoms at the contact between the molecule and the platinum electrode.

  • Momentum map imaging photoelectron spectroscopy of fullerenes with femtosecond laser pulses
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A. - 1050-2947. ; 81:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoelectron spectra of C60 and C70, ionized with ultrashort laser pulses, are measured with a momentum-map-imaging electron spectrometer. Above the photon energy, 1.6 eV, the spectra are essentially structureless and well described by Boltzmann distributions, with temperatures on the order of 104 K. This result is similar to previous results for C60 using a time-of-flight electron spectrometer, which are confirmed in this study. Comparisons of electron energy distributions recorded for identical laser intensities but for different pulse durations demonstrate unambiguously that a significant fraction of the electrons are emitted in quasithermal processes and results argue strongly against a field ionization or direct multiphoton ionization mechanism. For electron energies above the photon energy, which account for about half the intensity, the whole signal is consistent with this quasithermal emission.
