  • The role of stakeholder interaction in sustainable business models. A systematic literature review
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stakeholder interaction is increasingly recognised as an essential component of sustainable business models (SBMs), playing an important role for sustainable value propositions, creation and capture. However, research on the role and potential contribution of stakeholder interaction has been fragmented and not comprehensively examined. In response, a systematic literature review was conducted to provide an understanding on the topic. Forty-seven articles were systematically selected and thematically analysed according to SBM elements. Key findings demonstrate that (i) organisations need to consider five preconditions that can influence the role of stakeholder interaction in SBMs; (ii) stakeholder interaction plays different roles depending on if an organisation develops an SBM or innovates an existing BM towards sustainability; (iii) stakeholder interaction plays a multifaceted and reciprocal role in regard to sustainable value propositions, creation and capture; (iv) while the importance of interacting with a broad range of stakeholders is recognised, it is still often treated as add-on with a focus on customers and suppliers. Research gaps and managerial implications are highlighted that can support both academia and practitioners in updating the current knowledge on the role of stakeholder interaction in SBMs.

  • Challenges to competitive manufacturing in high-cost environments: checklist and insights from Swedish manufacturing firms
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Operations Management Research. - : Springer Nature. - 1936-9735 .- 1936-9743.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on competitive manufacturing (CM) in high-cost environments has earlier indicated that firms struggle to remain competitive and that manufacturing operations often have been offshored to low-cost environments. The purpose of this research is to explore and create a compounded view of challenges related to both internal and external environments of firms when operating in high-cost environments. This issue has been investigated through a qualitative case study involving five manufacturing firms in Sweden. This research has empirically derived the challenges associated with sustaining CM in high-cost environments and developed a prescriptive checklist. Seven main categories of challenges have been identified, ranging from a micro level related to product characteristics and employee involvement, to a macro level related to supply chain collaborations and industry systems. This research contributes to the existing literature on CM in high-cost locations by explaining and detailing what constitutes challenges in this kind of environment.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Operations and Supply Chain Management. - : The Operations and Supply Chain Management Forum. - 1979-3561. ; 10:4, s. 226-239
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today’s fast changing environment and increasing customers’ demands require that companies focus on efficiency along the entire supply chain. In order to achieve competitiveness, global sourcing is a common strategy. Especially sourcing from China is an accustomed practice and the topic of discussion by various academics and practitioners. Even though this topic is discussed extensively in literature, little focus is put on motivations, outcomes, problems and solutions when sourcing from China. The purpose of this study is to explore and analyze sourcing from China sourcing with regard to motivations, achieved outcomes, experienced problems as well as solutions to the problems. The results showed that it is crucial to recognize the importance of problems that can occur during global sourcing processes. As to achieve the desired outcomes, it is vital that companies address the problems by developing appropriate solutions. Motivations, outcomes, problems and solutions contain essential aspects that have to be considered and worked upon during a global sourcing process.

  • Feasibility of nearshoring European manufacturing located in China to Russia
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Operations and Supply Chain Management. - : The Operations and Supply Chain Management Forum. - 1979-3561. ; 10:3, s. 141-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze factors that support nearshoring of offshored European manufacturing located in China to Russia. The attention is paid to factors, such as labor cost, inflation, exchange rate, and labor productivity that are analyzed based on deterministic models to identify logical dependencies. This study shows that wage growth might deprive manufacturing in China from its main competitive advantage of cheap labor in the forthcoming years. The growing wage rates naturally contribute to the prime cost that is aggravated by the potential inflation, which, in turn, limit the margin in the selling price. The cumulative effect of other extra costs can aggregate such an amount that, in the foreseeable future, companies would need to relocate manufacturing to new locations. One option could be to nearshore manufacturing to Russia.

  • Design-driven innovation : Making meaning for whom
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Design Journal. - : European Academy of Design. - 1460-6925 .- 1756-3062. ; 20:S1, s. S479-S491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design-driven innovation focuses on the innovation of product meanings. This innovation is enabled by integrating knowledge on needs, product language and technological development. So far, it has mostly been studied in contexts where the buyer is the assumed end user. There has been little research about design-driven innovation in other contexts, such as business-to-business and public contexts. Here, companies need to create value for multiple stakeholders. In this study, these are defined as users, buyers and influencers. The aim of this study is to explore how companies consider the different stakeholders in the innovation of product meanings. Two companies participated in a case study. The results demonstrate that both companies mainly focus on addressing needs. However, while one case company prioritizes the perspective from the user, the other focuses more on the buyer. The results illustrate the increased complexity that companies need to manage in design-driven innovation in these contexts.

  • Shedding Light on the Brazilian Amazon Biotrade : A Study on Sustainable Development in Native Communities
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 14:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Amazon is a biodiversity hotspot. Around 90% of its territory is inhabited by native communities, who spontaneously organize themselves into groups of extractivists and small producers, relying on biodiversity as their primary means of sustenance. This paper aims to discuss how the biotrade of Amazonian biodiversity goods affects native communities with respect to environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Based on a sample of 178 native extractivists in four communities, we concluded that biotrade enabled native communities to market their products by adapting to existing conditions, considering the difficulties and the expectations of traditional residents, and contributed to the three dimensions of sustainable development.

  • Application of the just-in-time approach to a third-generation port
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Operations and Supply Chain Management. - : OSCM Journal. - 1979-3561 .- 2579-9363. ; 13:3, s. 279-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the feasibility of different logistics concepts applicable in a third-generation port (first-and-foremost, just-in-time approach for a given case). In this regard, a simulation model imitating the work of a real third-generation port was developed. Four experiments with proposed logistics solutions have been configured and evaluated in the simulation model. They differed by the size and number of shipping consignments to the port, deployed truck fleet, etc. The research shows that effective material transfers from the plant to the port can be provided, if a ‘pulling’ type of logistics system is applied instead of the traditional ‘pushing’ system. This alternative allows goods to be delivered just-in-time with the minimum labour costs and material resources.

  • Local and organic food distribution systems: towards a future agenda
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Operations and Supply Chain Management. - : OSCM Forum. - 1979-3561 .- 2579-9363. ; 13:4, s. 336-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been an increasing consumer demand for local and organic food as they are considered to be more sustainable, ecological and healthier. The ‘conventional’ long food distribution system is not sufficient to fulfill the current needs. Consequently, short distribution systems for local and organic food have been gaining popularity, that is not only sustainable but also contributes to food security and satisfies local consumer demand. One such short distribution systems are alternative food networks (AFNs). The AFNs have emerged as a promising provisioning system for local and organic food that promotes economical, environmental and social sustainability and respect for farming tradition. However, the AFNs are facing challenges in increasing the distribution of local and organic food in the long term. The purpose of the paper is to make a review of the existing short food distribution systems for local and organic food and propose a research agenda. In order to achieve this, a literature review is conducted and different food distribution channels within AFNs are studied. The challenges for each food distribution channel are identified and then compared to ‘conventional’ distribution systems. The main finding of the study is a framework of main challenges of short food distribution channels within AFNs. The practical implication is generic criteria to consider while designing a short food distribution system that closely connects consumers and farmers of local and organic food. The policy implication is to create favorable conditions to encourage short food distribution systems in the long term.
