  • Business models for deployment and operation of femtocell networks : Are new cooperation strategies needed for mobile operators?
  • 2010
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper we discuss different business models for deployment and operation of femtocell networks intended for provisioning of public mobile broad band access services. In these types of business cases the operators use femtocells in order to reduce investments in “more costly” macro networks since the traffic can be “offloaded” to “less costly” femtocell networks. This is in contrast to the many business cases presented in Femtoforum where femtocells mainly are discussed as a solution to improve indoor coverage for voice services in homes and small offices, usually for closed user groups The main question discussed in this paper is if “operators need to consider new forms of cooperation strategies in order to enable large scale deployment of femtocells for public access?” By looking into existing solutions for indoor wireless access services we claim that the answer is both “Yes” and “No”. No, since many types of cooperation are already in place for indoor deployment.  Yes, because mobile operators need to re-think the femtocell specific business models, from approaches based on singe operator networks to different forms of cooperation involving multi-operator solutions, e.g. roaming and network sharing.

  • Technical development and the formation of new business ventures, The case of new mobile payment and ticketing services
  • 2011
  • In: The IMP Journal. - : Emerald. - 2059-1403 .- 0809-7259. ; 5:1, s. 23-41
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • How do new business ventures emerge, and how is their emergence linked to technical development? What are the challenges of forming new business ventures when the business involves the connection of previously unconnected or loosely connected networks? This paper analyses the connections between technical development and the formation of new business ventures. A set of case studies is presented that show how existing market structures, business development and associated wireless, technologies and systems are affected by the emergence of new mobile payment and ticketing services. This paper presents result from an on-going research project on near field communication based services in Sweden. In late 2008 the project “Foundation For NFC/Sensor Network B2B2C Services” (FORCE) was initiated by TeliaSonera Mobile Network, KTH Center for Wireless System, and Center for Information and Communication Research at the Stockholm School of Economics.

  • The formation of new business ventures in networks : creating new intermediary roles and extracting value from the exploitation of technology
  • 2010
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper analyzes new business formation connected to the use of established mobile technologies and associated services. The purpose of the paper is to describe how a set of alternative business network situations can emerge when established wireless application technologies are exploited and new value is created and new business ventures are formed. A set of short cases describe how new business can be created based on established SMS applications and services. The paper discusses central aspects of the formation of new business ventures in networks. Here, focus is on opportunities to create value based on the exploitation of existing technology. The technology is used in a new way and is perceived by existing actors as an opportunity to exploit by creating a new intermediary performing a new role. In business practice, technology development is related to formation of new business ventures, they cannot be separated from each other.

  • Decoupling of revenues and traffic - Is there a revenue gap for mobile broadband?
  • 2010
  • In: 2010 9th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet, CTTE 2010. - 9781424479887
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Mobile broadband is increasing rapidly both when it comes to traffic and the number of subscriptions. Operators are challenged by the fact that revenues from mobile broadband are de-coupled from the traffic. In this paper we will analyze if this de-coupling results in a “revenue gap” for the combined voice and mobile broadband business and, if this is the case, how significant the gap is. We analyze a country and operator case where the increasing user demand requires network upgrades. The impact of increasing traffic, revenues and costs is analyzed in terms of profit margin for the voice and mobile broadband businesses. The results show that the overall profit for the modeled operator decreases due to declining voice revenues. The contribution from mobile broadband depends heavily on the amount of traffic growth and prices.

  • Can mobile eco-systems for technical innovations be standardized? : The case of mobile wallets and contactless communication
  • 2011
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper puts focus on the application of Near Field Communication technology (NFC) to mobile payments. Uncertainties about global policies open for a variety of local business policies. Taking into account different representations of actor interaction as described by different eco-systems by different policy forums the main research question to be discussed in the paper is: Can policies or standards describing actor roles and responsibilities for technical innovations like mobile payments remove obstacles for introduction of the innovation? Different types of industry forums are not only involved in strictly technical matters but also discuss and describe “visions” about how a new technique might be applied in business life. They suggest different “business architectures”, (not only a “technical architecture”), where roles of different type of actors and relations between actors are outlined based on ideas about so called “eco-systems”. Against this background the paper first discusses how NFC enabled mobile payments currently attracts a lot of attention and identifies four possible development paths “making it happen”. The paper discusses and compares how global policy networks describe the technical and business architectures for mobile payments. The paper uses a business practice analytical framework and an industrial network framework to identify major problems in connecting global and local policies. Some comments on further research finalize the paper.

  • Global policy networks’ involvement in service innovation. Turning the mobile phone into a wallet by applying NFC technology
  • 2011
  • In: The IMP Journal. - 2059-1403 .- 0809-7259. ; 5:3, s. 193-211
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The mobile phone attracts an increasing number of service applications enabled by technical developments. On-going efforts aim to widen the scope of mobile payments and “turning the mobile phone into a wallet” with the help of Near Field Technology (NFC). A number of industries are involved in this development. To enable large scale commercial application of the new technology for mobile payments, several global industry associations, what we label Global Policy Networks (GPNs), are involved in standard setting, certification, visions and promotion of business applications, etc. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the role of GPNs in establishing global policies to enable business actors to develop and implement local policies applying the new technology for business purposes. The paper focuses on how some yet to be settled global policy issues affect local policies.

  • Analysis of Ecosystem for Mobile Ticketing & Payment services and Implications for NFC based Mobile services
  • 2010
  • In: 18th Biennial and Silver Anniversary Conference, Tokyo.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper and two accompanying papers we will discuss the issues above with focus on the business network, often called the “mobile eco-system”, and the role of different types of middlemen or intermediaries. Empirically, since mobile payments enabled by NFC technology is not yet widely diffused and commercially available (inSwedenandNorthern Europe) we cannot study and analyze the envisaged eco-system with actors, roles and relations. However, there are a number of daily-life services that are enabled by the use of mobile phones. SMS based ticketing and payment is one such type of existing service that can be investigated in order to describe existing interactions between actors, and the formation of different forms of new business. By studying the existing services and markets some lessons can be learned how new business and value can be created, this is the topic of the first paper. In another paper with the title “Dissemination of New Communication Technology and the Creation of New Business Roles and Intermediaries: The case of contactless mobile payment services” we will discuss aspects of mobile eco-systems using NFC based services. The third paper in the special session is called “Trust Strategies in the Rollout of Near Field Communication Services”.

  • Analysis of roles and position of mobile network operators in mobile payment infrastructure
  • 2010
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A number of different mobile payment solutions have been presented the last decade. The phone subscription with its security mechanisms are used for user identification and payments. This is the case for SMS based payment and ticketing systems that are getting more and more popular. However, there are other ways to implement a Trusted Element (TE) , where a SIM card architecture is only one. It can be in the mobile phone, as a separate integrated circuit, as an optional customer deployed plug-in device (e.g., microSD) or be running as an application on a server existing entirely as software. In this paper we analyze what roles and responsibilities different actors have in different types of mobile payments solutions. The main focus is on the implications for the mobile operator business. It turns out that new types of intermediary actors in most cases play an important role. Sometimes mobile operators are not even involved. The emergence of new payment together with other non-SIM card based TE solutions opens up for many different market scenarios for mobile payment services.
