  • User Comments and Moderation in Digital Journalism : Disruptive Engagement
  • 2020
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book is an authoritative discussion of user comments and moderation in digital journalism, examining how user comments have disrupted the field of journalism and how a growing number of news organizations have abandoned commenting features altogether. Making a broad argument concerning user commentary as a manifestation of user engagement and public deliberation, User Comments and Moderation in Digital Journalism: Disruptive Engagement conceptualizes the act of commenting as interactive engagement and participation in a virtual public sphere. The book also explores the organizational policies that have the potential to disrupt - as well as improve - the quality of user discussions. Ultimately, strategies are proposed for managing and improving user comments and encouraging more productive public deliberation in digital journalism. This engaging discussion of a key development in digital journalism is a valuable resource for academics and researchers in the areas of journalism, media and communication studies.

  • User comments in digital journalism : Current research and future directions
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Routledge Handbook of Developments in Digital Journalism Studies. - London : Routledge. - 9781315270449 - 9781138283053 ; , s. 475-486
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter discusses the ambivalent nature of user comments. It provides an overview of current research on user comments in digital journalism and directions for future research. The chapter also discusses who reads and writes comments as well as motivations and inhibitors for doing so. It analyzes existing theory and research on the act of commenting, including thoughts and findings on commenting as an act of public deliberation and political action. The chapter also discusses prominent issues that come along with the bipolar nature of user comments, such as comment in/civility, comment moderation, and organizational perspectives and commenting policies, as well as commenting effects. Research suggests that the in/civility of comments can be explained by a variety of factors, including: story topic, sources, journalist participation in comment threads, journalist demography, and organizational commenting policies. The chapter concludes with directions for future research.

  • Peacebuilding in Fragile, War-Torn Societies in Africa
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Routledge International Handbook of Sociology and Christianity. - : Taylor & Francis. - 9781003277743 ; , s. 326-338
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter covers peacebuilding in three countries in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes regions of Africa - South Sudan, Burundi, and Central Africa Republic (CAR) - characterized by fragility and protracted intra-state conflicts. The first section presents a preamble to peacebuilding in these African countries, while the second section illustrates how the warring parties have been wrestling with peace (dis)agreements in each country. The last section revisits William Zartman’s “ripeness” concept to reflect on when, or at what point, parties in protracted intra-state conflicts might be more amenable to opening peace negotiations. The active role of churches and religious organizations in peacebuilding is also highlighted. The chapter emphasizes that, though each conflict is different in important respects, the distinctive characteristics of each case are crucial determinants of the propitious moments for initiating peacebuilding. It suggests that agreements signed by the various groups failed to bring about peace because commitment to ending hostilities is contingent upon a shared vision of the benefits of a peaceful resolution, in which power is the prize to be won. And because there cannot be more than one winner in a war, taking an opportunity when a ripe moment appears is often not an attractive option.

  • Sweden s Approach to COVID-19 in the Context of a Poised National Self-Image
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Revista Critica de Ciencias Sociais. - : Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra. - 0254-1106 .- 2182-7435. ; :128, s. 61-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the beginning of the Pandemic, Sweden took a different path from her Nordic neighbours and many other countries, namely by not implementing a "forced mass lockdown" or applying stringent restrictions. This paper sets out to examine Sweden s national strategy for responding to COVID-19. This research seeks to address the extent to which the underlying concepts of Swedish "ethos" and "tradition" influenced or shaped the national strategy to avoid forced mass lockdown during the pandemic. To prevent an enforced lockdown to control the spread of COVID-19, the Swedish government presented a range of different measures, both "voluntary and legally binding". The strategy employed by the Public Health Authority was based on notions of "individual responsibility" and "mutual trust" between the government and the citizenry. The guidelines were often ambiguous and left to individuals to interpret for themselves.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Governance, Security and Development Nexus. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030493479 - 9783030493486 ; , s. 355-370
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Migration is simply the action or process of changing one’s place of residence permanently or temporarily. Migration can be voluntary or involuntary, though as some scholars would like to argue, very few people would take the risk of leaving their countries, homes, and communities and migrate to unknown places without being forced to do so by circumstances that are often beyond their control. Often the thin line between migration that is motivated by a sense of adventure and the search for greener pastures is blurred.

  • An introduction to innovative methods in media and communication research
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Innovative Methods in Media and Communication Research. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319406992 - 9783319407005 ; , s. 1-12
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Kubitschko and Kaun explicate the book’s aim to actively and prolifically approach methodological challenges and opportunities by bringing together empirical research about media transformations as well as studies that do research through media. The chapter highlights that the book gathers unique insights to innovative methodological approaches in media and communication studies while embedding these in the rich history of interdisciplinary empirical research of various fields. Kubitschko and Kaun advocate an inclusive understanding of ‘innovation’ to denote the lively and productive qualities of emerging methods. Innovation here is a call for widening and rethinking research methods to further understandings of the role media technologies and infrastructures play in society. Above all, methodological innovation takes place in doing. To innovate one has to develop, apply and critically reflect on research methods.

  • Experiment on multimode feedback control of non-linear thermocapillary convection in a half-zone liquid bridge
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: LOW GRAVITY PHENOMENA AND CONDENSED MATTER EXPERIMENTS IN SPACE. - : Elsevier BV. ; 36:4, s. 57-63
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Feedback control on was carried out on non-linear thermocapillary convections in a half-zone liquid bridge of a high Prandtl number fluid. In the liquid bridge, the convection changes from a two-dimensional steady flow to a three-dimensional oscillatory one at a critical temperature difference. Feedback control was realized by locally modifying the free surface temperature using local temperature measured at different positions. The present study aims to develop a new control scheme by taking spatio-temporal azimuthal distribution of temperature fluctuation into account. The new control scheme achieved significant attenuation of the temperature oscillation compared with the previous one in a high Marangoni number range.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Transactions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Part B. - 0387-5016. ; 71:706, s. 1617-1624
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A feedback control upon nonlinear thermocapillary convections in a half-zone liquid bridge of a high Prandtl number fluid was conducted. In the liquid bridge, the convection changes from two-dimensional steady flow to three-dimensional oscillatory one at a critical temperature difference. The feedback control was realized by locally modifying the free surface temperature using local temperature measured at different positions. The present study aims to develop a new control scheme by taking spatiotemporal azimuthal distribution of temperature fluctuation into account. The performance of the control was evaluated with amplitude of the surface temperature with and without control. The behavior of the present controlled system was compared with that of our previous one on the spectral analysis. The new control scheme achieved significant attenuation of the temperature oscillation compared with the previous one for high Marangoni number region.
