  • Probing the electron-to-proton mass ratio gradient in the Milky Way with Class I methanol masers
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 511:1, s. 413-424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We estimate limits on non-universal coupling of hypothetical hidden fields to standard matter by evaluating the fractional changes in the electron-to-proton mass ratio, mu = m(e)/m(p), based on observations of Class I methanol masers distributed in the Milky Way disc over the range of the Galactocentric distances 4 less than or similar to R less than or similar to 12 kpc. The velocity offsets Delta V = V-44 - V-95 measured between the 44- and 95-GHz methanol lines provide, so far, one of the most stringent constraints on the spatial gradient k(mu)= d(Delta mu/mu)/dR < 2 x10(-9) kpc(-1) and the upper limit on Delta mu/mu <2 x 10(-8), where Delta mu/mu = (mu(obs) - mu(lab))/mu(lab). We also find that the offsets Delta V are clustered into two groups which are separated by delta(Delta V) = 0.022 +/- 0.003 km s(-1) (1 sigma confidence level). The grouping is most probably due to the dominance of different hyperfine transitions in the 44- and 95-GHz methanol maser emission. Which transition becomes favoured is determined by an alignment (polarization) of the nuclear spins of the four hydrogen atoms in the methanol molecule. This result confirms that there are preferred hyperfine transitions involved in the methanol maser action.

  • Revered and reviled : a sentiment analysis of female and male referents in three languages
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Communication. - 2297-900X. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our study contributes to the less explored domain of lexical typology, focusing on semantic prosody and connotation. Semantic derogation, or pejoration of nouns referring to women, whereby such words acquire connotations and further denotations of social pejoration, immorality and/or loose sexuality, has been a very prominent question in studies on gender and language (change). It has been argued that pejoration emerges due to the general derogatory attitudes toward female referents. However, the evidence for systematic differences in connotations of female- vs. male-related words is fragmentary and often fairly impressionistic; moreover, many researchers argue that expressed sentiments toward women (as well as men) often are ambivalent. One should also expect gender differences in connotations to have decreased in the recent years, thanks to the advances of feminism and social progress. We test these ideas in a study of positive and negative connotations of feminine and masculine term pairs such as woman - man, girl - boy, wife - husband, etc. Sentences containing these words were sampled from diachronic corpora of English, Chinese and Russian, and sentiment scores for every word were obtained using two systems for Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis: PyABSA, and OpenAI's large language model GPT-3.5. The Generalized Linear Mixed Models of our data provide no indications of significantly more negative sentiment toward female referents in comparison with their male counterparts. However, some of the models suggest that female referents are more infrequently associated with neutral sentiment than male ones. Neither do our data support the hypothesis of the diachronic convergence between the genders. In sum, results suggest that pejoration is unlikely to be explained simply by negative attitudes to female referents in general.

  • Fast Time-Invariant Implementations for Linear Least Squares Smoothing Filters
  • 1979
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. - : IEEE Control Systems Society. - 0018-9286 .- 1558-2523. ; 24:5, s. 770-775
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a new solution for the fixed interval linear least-squares smoothing of a random signal, finite dimensional or not, inadditive white noise. By using the so-called Sobolev identity of radiative transfer theory, the smoothed estimate for stationary processes is expressed entirely in terms of time-invariant causal and anticausal filtering operations; these are interpreted from a stochastic point of view as giving certain constrained (time-invariant) filtered estimates of the signal. Then by using a recently introduced notion of processes close to stationary, these results are extended in a natural way to general nonstationary processes. From a computational point of view, the representations presented here are particularly convenient, not only because time-invariant filters can be used to find the smoothed estimate, but also because a fast algorithm based on the so-called generalized Krein-Levinson recursions can be used to compute the time-invariant filters themselves.

  • The role of cystatin C in cerebral amyloid angiopathy and stroke: Cell biology and animal models : cell biology and animal models
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Brain Pathology. - : Wiley. - 1750-3639 .- 1015-6305. ; 16:1, s. 60-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A variant of the cysteine protease inhibitor, cystatin C, forms amyloid deposited in the cerebral vasculature of patients with hereditary cerebral hemorrhage with amyloidosis, Icelandic type (HCHWA-I), leading to cerebral hemorrhages early in life. However, cystatin C is also implicated in neuronal degenerative diseases in which it does not form the amyloid protein, such as Alzheimer disease (AD). Accumulating data suggest involvement of cystatin C in the pathogenic processes leading to amyloid deposition in cerebral vasculature and most significantly to cerebral hemorrhage in patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). This review focuses on cell culture and animal models used to study the role of cystatin C in these processes.
