  • Att trygga innovation och utveckling för Marinens materielförsörjning
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Tidskrift i Sjöväsendet. - Karlskrona. - 0040-6945 .- 2002-410X. ; :3, s. 341-349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In November 2020, the Swedish government initiated an enquiry with the task to propose a future materiel supply strategy for Sweden’s military defence. Ba[1]sed on this task, we discuss which actors make up today’s national defense industry, specifically within the naval domain. In order to maintain a high rate of innovation, there should be a continuous inflow of new actors. There are different ways to make it possible and attractive for start-ups and other small firms to operate in this complex market. The author suggests in-depth studies of how other nations have approached this issue, and recommends that innovation ecosystems be initiated, centered on specific product platforms, i.e. naval ship classes.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Jonsereds Herrgård 16 maj 2018.

  • Innovation ecosystems: A conceptual review and a new definition
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Technovation. - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-4972. ; 90-91
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of innovation ecosystems has become popular during the last 15 years, leading to a debate regarding its relevance and conceptual rigor, not the least in this journal. The purpose of this article is to review received definitions of innovation ecosystems and related concepts and to propose a synthesized definition of an innovation ecosystem. The conceptual analysis identifies an unbalanced focus on complementarities, collaboration, and actors in received definitions, and among other things proposes the additional inclusion of competition, substitutes, and artifacts in conceptualizations of innovation ecosystems, leading to the following definition: An innovation ecosystem is the evolving set of actors, activities, and artifacts, and the institutions and relations, including complementary and substitute relations, that are important for the innovative performance of an actor or a population of actors. This definition is compatible with related conceptualizations of innovation systems and natural ecosystems, and the validity of it is illustrated with three empirical examples of innovation ecosystems.

  • 2022

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing concern within the surface science community that the massive increase in the number of XPS articles over the last few decades is accompanied by a decrease in work quality including in many cases meaningless chemical bond assignment. Should this trend continue, it would have disastrous consequences for scientific research. While there are many factors responsible for this situation, the lack of insight of physical principles combined with seeming ease of XPS operation and insufficient training are certainly the major ones. To counter that, we offer a comprehensive tutorial written in the form of a step-by-step guide starting from experimental planning, through sample selection and handling, instrument setup, data acquisition, spectra analysis, and results presentation. Six application examples highlight the broad range of research questions that can be answered by XPS. The topic selection and the discussion level are intended to be accessible for novices yet challenging possible preconceptions of experienced practitioners. The analyses of thin film samples are chosen for model cases as this is from where the bulk of XPS reports presently emanate and also where the authors key expertise lies. At the same time, the majority of discussed topics is applicable to surface science in general and is, thus, of relevance for the analyses of any type of sample and material class. The tutorial contains ca. 160 original spectra and over 290 references for further reading. Particular attention is paid to the correct workflow, development of good research practices, and solid knowledge of factors that impact the quality and reliability of the obtained information. What matters in the end is that the conclusions from the analysis can be trusted. Our aspiration is that after reading this tutorial each practitioner will be able to perform error-free data analysis and draw meaningful insights from the rich well of XPS. • Autonomously Improving Systems in Industry : A Systematic Literature Review
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Software Business. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030672911 - 9783030672928 ; 407, s. 30-45
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A significant amount of research effort is put into studying machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) technologies. Real-world ML applications help companies to improve products and automate tasks such as classification, image recognition and automation. However, a traditional “fixed” approach where the system is frozen before deployment leads to a sub-optimal system performance. Systems autonomously experimenting with and improving their own behavior and performance could improve business outcomes but we need to know how this could actually work in practice. While there is some research on autonomously improving systems, the focus on the concepts and theoretical algorithms. However, less research is focused on empirical industry validation of the proposed theory. Empirical validations are usually done through simulations or by using synthetic or manually alteration of datasets. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we conduct a systematic literature review in which we focus on papers describing industrial deployments of autonomously improving systems and their real-world applications. Secondly, we identify open research questions and derive a model that classifies the level of autonomy based on our findings in the literature review.

  • Bacterial cellulose: A smart biomaterial with diverse applications
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Materials Science and Engineering: R: Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-796X. ; 145
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Natural biomaterials have benefited the human civilisation for millennia. However, in recent years, designing of natural materials for a wide range of applications have become a focus of attention, spearheaded by sustain-ability. With advances in materials science, new ways of manufacturing, processing, and functionalising bio-materials for structural specificity has become feasible. Our review is focused on bacterial cellulose (BC), an exceptionally versatile natural biomaterial. BC is a unique nanofibrillar biomaterial extruded by microscopic single-cell bacterial factories utilising the chemical energy harvested from renewable substrates. BC is extra-cellular and is intrinsically pure, unlike other biopolymers that require extraction and purification. BC fibres are 100 times thinner than plant-derived cellulose and exist in a highly porous three-dimensional network that is highly biocompatible. Macro fibres fabricated from BC nanofibrils are stronger and stiffer, have high tensile strength values and can be used as substitutes for fossil fuel-derived synthetic fibres. The increased surface area to volume ratio allows stronger interactions with the components of composites that are derived from BC. The reactive hydroxyl groups on BC allows various chemical modifications for the development of functionalised BC with a plethora of & lsquo;smart & rsquo; applications. In this review we consolidate the current knowledge on the production and properties of BC and BC composites, and highlight the very recent advancements in bulk applications, including food, paper, packaging, superabsorbent polymers and the bio-concrete industries. The process simplicity of BC production has the potential for large scale low-cost applications in bioremediation. Furthermore, the emerging high value applications of BC will be in electrochemical energy storage devices as a battery separator, and in transparent display technologies will be explored. Finally, the extensive biomedical applications of BC are discussed including, wound healing, controlled drug delivery, cancer treatment, cell culture and artificial blood vessels. In a further development on this, additive manufacturing considers enhancing the capabilities for manufacturing complex scaffolds for biomedical applications. An outlook on the future directions of BC in these and other innovative areas is presented.

    • AbstractPurposeInitiatives in the Quality Management area, such as Six Sigma, originating in an industrial context have been applied in a healthcare context. A focus of these initiatives has been on decreasing variation in performance caused by uncontrollable so-called noise factors. To create a product that is insensitive to these factors is the goal of Robust Design Methodology (RDM). The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the applicability of RDM in healthcare, by exploring possible contributions of a RDM practice to increase patient safety.MethodologyThe case study, used as inspiration in this paper, was carried out at a Swedish hospital as a part of an action research project. Data was collected through participation in project meetings/work and by interviews.FindingsVariation is discussed and problematized in a healthcare setting as well as in industry. These discussions target various form such as variation in the care provided based on your place of residence, your gender, or your ethnical background. Variation can also be interpreted as unwanted variations in care depending on varying levels of compliance. This paper shows that RDM can be useful in designing processes in which un-controllable sources of variations do not lead to patient risks.OriginalityThis paper contributes to research on RDM by showing an application in a new context, and to healthcare providers by adapting a practice from RDM to support design of robust and safe healthcare processes.Key words: Robust design methodology, healthcare, Six Sigma, Design for Six Sigma
