  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The problem of estimating depth information from two or more images of a scene is one which has received considerable attention over the years and a wide variety of methods have been proposed to solve it [Barnard and Fichsler, 1982; Fleck, 1991]. Methods based on correlation and methods using some form of feature matching between the images have found most widespread use. Of these, the latter have attracted increasing attention since the work of Marr [Marr, 1982], in which the features are zero-crossings on varying scales. These methods share an underlying basis of spatial domain operations. In recent years, however, increasing interest has been shown in computational models of vision based primarily on a localized frequency domain representation - the Gabor representation [Gabor, 1946; Adelson and Bergen, 1985], first suggested in the context of computer vision by Granlund [Granlund, 1978].

  • Prediction of cancer incidence
  • 1998
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper a method for predicting future number of cancer diagnoses is derived. The method is based on estimation of the cumulative hazard of cancer diagnosis and cumulative hazard of population mortality. The estimation of cancer hazard is done non-parametrically, while the population death hazard is assumed to follow the Gompertz-Makeham distribution. The prediction is based on the assumption that cancer incidence and population mortality in the prediction intervals are derived. Also, prediction intervals, based on non-parametric bootstrap, are presented. The method is applied to predict number of colon cancer diagnoses among females in the northern part of Sweden. It has shown to detect and adjust for changes in population age structure, and to provide good predictions in situation where the cancer incidence and population mortality are stable during the prediction period.

  • Unemployment and subsequent wages : does gender matter?
  • 1999
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Are there any differences in how men and women fare from unemployment in terms of the wages they receive on a new job? This paper addresses that question using the 1991 wave of the Level of Living Survey. The results suggest that men who experience unemployment will suffer a reduction of subsequent wages while no such effect could be found for women. These findings support the interpretation that women invest more in general rather than specific human capital which make them less exposed to career interruptions, at least those of a short duration. Due to the favourable labour market at the time, average unemployment duration was rather short, which may have prevented general capital from depreciating. However, the presence of large negative occurrence effects for men suggests that unemployment, even of a short duration, is associated with considerable loss of human capital.
