  • Size selective capture of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in floating pots

    • Little is known about the size selectivity of cod in static fishing gears such as pots and traps. In this field study, floating fishing pots were equipped with 40, 45 and 50 mm square mesh escape windows in order to estimate the size selectivity of cod at different mesh sizes. Relationships between selectivity parameters and mesh size, as well as an optimal mesh size for the escape window with respect to current minimum landing size of cod in the Baltic Sea were sought. The results show that the floating pot is not only species selective when used in the Baltic Sea cod fishery, the implementation of an escape window reduced the proportion of undersized bycatch in the pots by more than 90%. The estimated length at 50% retention was found to be a direct function of fish body length (girth) and mesh size of the escape window, while the estimated selection range remained unchanged regardless of mesh size. Optimal mesh size, with respect to the length at 50% retention and current minimal landing size of 38 cm in the Baltic, was determined to be 45 mm. Strong indications (significant on the 0.01 probability level in the case of 50 and 40 mm escape windows) suggested that the relative fishing power of the pots increased with the implementation of an escape window. This result could be explained as a "saturation effect", i.e. the probability of cod entering the pot is likely to be negatively dependent on cod density in the pot. The high species selectivity and the low catch rate of undersized fish have consolidated the floating pots position as a highly benign fishing method and the foremost alternative gear for the future coastal cod fishery in the Baltic Sea.   • Renomedullary Blood Flow And Blood Volume Are Increased During Vasopressin Escape

    • Hyponatremia is a common electrolyte disorder usually caused by inappropriate vasopressin (AVP) levels relative to serum osmolality. The degree of the hyponatremia is limited by "escape" from AVP-induced antidiuresis, characterized by increased urine volume and decreased urine osmolality independently of circulating AVP. The mechanisms mediating escape are not fully understood, but we have hypothesized that increased renomedullary blood flow (BF) contributes to this process. We therefore investigated intrarenal BF and blood volume distribution in rats with and without escape.Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=10) were infused with DDAVP (5 ng/h) to produce maximal antidiuresis. Half were fed a liquid diet (AIN-76) to produce escape; half were fed a solid diet to prevent escape. After 5 days, all rats were anesthetized with Inactin and high resolution images (voxel size 97x97x600 µm) of renal BF were acquired using a Siemens Definition Dual Source CT. Iopromide (0.15 ml/rat) was rapidly injected iv and the contrast over the kidney area was collected during 30 s. Data were evaluated by analyzing local renal contrast density utilizing the Siemens Syngo body perfusion tool and correlated to the aorta. Cortical and medullary BF were 709±41 and 251±50 ml/100ml/min respectively in non-escaped rats. Cortical BF in escaped rats was similar (588±81 ml/100ml/min), but medullary BF was increased compared to non-escaped rats (666±105 ml/100ml/min). Blood volumes were similar in the two groups in cortex (42±1 vs. 49±6 ml/100ml), but elevated in the medulla of escaped rats (70±3 vs 18±3 ml/100ml).Our results demonstrate that escape is accompanied by markedly elevated renomedullary BF and volume. Elevated BF to the renal medulla results in reduced interstitial osmolality, and may also contribute to the down-regulation of aquarporin-2 water channels known to accompany escape. These results therefore provide a potential mechanistic explanation for the reduced ability to concentrate urine during AVP escape.

    • The importance of autopsy procedures leading to the establishment of the cause of death is well-known. A recent addition to the autopsy work flow is the possibility of conducting postmortem imaging, in its 3D version also called virtual autopsy (VA), using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) or magnetic resonance imagining (MRI) data from scans of cadavers displayed with direct volume rendering (DVR) 3D techniques. The use of the data and their workflow are presented. Data acquisition was performed and high quality data-sets with submillimeter precision were acquired. New data acquisition techniques such as dualenergy CT (DECT) and quantitative MRI, then were implemented and provided additional information. Particular findings hardly visualized in conventional autopsy can rather easy be seen at the full body CT, such as air distribution, e.g. pneumothorax, pneumopericardium, air embolism, and wound channels. MRI shows natural deaths such as myocardial infarctions. Interactive visualization of these 3D data-sets can provide valuable insight into the corpses and enables non-invasive diagnostic procedures. In postmortem CT imaging, not being limited by a patient depending radiation dose limit the data-sets can, however, be generated with such a high resolution that they become difficult to handle in today’s archive retrieval and interactive visualization systems, specifically in the case of full body scans. To take full advantage of these new technologies the postmortem workflow needs to be tailored to the demands and opportunities that the new technologies allow.

    • Magnetometers are one of the most common instruments on spacecrafts. They are used for both satellite attitude determination and for scientific purposes, such as mapping of Earth’s magnetic field. The most common magnetometer for low-frequency applications is the fluxgate. High-end fluxgates are generally quite bulky, with a mass of around 1 kg, but there exist miniature version, weighing only around 100 g, but with worse noise figure. Interest in such miniature models has increased with the adaption of the Faster-Better-Cheaper philosophy, and the introduction of small satellite classes. However, downscaling of fluxgates beyond the present 100 g has proven difficult, wherefore other technologies have earned more and more interest, especially those employing different kinds of magnetoresistance.Here, a review of different magnetoresistive techniques, and their past, present and potential use in space is presented. Magnetoresistive sensors based on anisotropic, giant, and tunneling magnetoresistance is covered, and extra attention is directed towards sensors based on the planar Hall effect. The latter have the potential of overcoming some of the major disadvantages of other magnetoresistive sensors, such as poor detectivity at low frequencies, and the need for external biasing coils to improve linearity and reduce hysteresis by, e.g., set-reset protocols and magnetic feedback.Moreover, the design of two such planar Hall effect sensors is tailored to meet the requirements set on a magnetometer aimed for, firstly, attitude determination and, secondly, mapping of Earth’s magnetic field. It is concluded that planar Hall effect sensors is one of the prime candidates for the next generation of miniaturized low-frequency space magnetometers.

    • To evaluate the performance of dried blood spots (DBSs) with subsequent analyses of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADA) and islet antigen-2 (IA-2A) with the RSR-ELISAs, we selected 80 children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and 120 healthy women. DBSs from patients and controls were used for RSR-ELISAs while patients samples were analysed also with in-house RIAs. The RSR-ELISA-GADA performed well with a specificity of 100%, albeit sensitivity (46%) was lower compared to in RIA (56%; P = .008). No prozone effect was observed after dilution of discrepant samples. RSR-ELISA-IA-2A achieved specificity of 69% and sensitivity was lower (59%) compared with RIA (66%; P < .001). Negative or low positive patients and control samples in the RSR-ELISA-IA-2A increased after dilution. Eluates from DBS can readily be used to analyse GADA with the RSR-ELISA, even if low levels of autoantibodies were not detected. Some factor could disturb RSR-ELISA-IA-2A analyses.

  • Etch-stop technique for patterning of tunnel junctions for a magnetic field sensor

    • Spin-dependent tunnelling devices, e. g. magnetic random access memories and highly sensitive tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR) sensors, often consist of a large number of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) of uniform quality over the whole device. The uniformity and yield of the fabrication of such a device are therefore very important. A major source of yield loss is the short-circuiting of junctions by redeposition of etch residues. This can be prevented by terminating of the etch in the typically 1 nm thick tunnelling barrier. Here, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis for monitoring the etching semi-continuously is proposed. The fabrication scheme employs Ar ion milling for etching the MTJs, and photoelectron spectroscopy for analysing the composition of the etched surface in situ. Junctions etched either to or through the barrier were used for this. The quality of the etch stop was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and it was confirmed that the etch could be stopped in the MgO barrier. The TEM imaging also showed clear signs of redeposition. Such redeposition was attributed to being partly caused by the reduction of the TMR ratio of the junctions etched through the barrier, which was only 15% as compared with 150% for junctions etched to the barrier. Also, the latter junctions exhibited 2.7 times less noise in the low-frequency regime, resulting in a 27 times improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio with the etch stop. The barrier also proved effective in protecting the bottom contact from oxidation during the capping and contacting of the junctions.
