  • The Case for Approximate Intermittent Computing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 21st ACM/IEEE International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (ISPN 2022). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781665496247 - 9781665496254 ; , s. 463-476
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the concept of approximate intermittent computing and concretely demonstrate its application. Intermittent computations stem from the erratic energy patterns caused by energy harvesting: computations unpredictably terminate whenever energy is insufficient and the application state is lost. Existing solutions maintain equivalence to continuous executions by creating persistent state on non-volatile memory, enabling stateful computations to cross power failures. The performance penalty is massive: system throughput reduces while energy consumption increases. In contrast, approximate intermittent computations trade the accuracy of the results for sparing the entire overhead to maintain equivalence to a continuous execution. This is possible as we use approximation to limit the extent of stateful computations to the single power cycle, enabling the system to completely shift the energy budget for managing persistent state to useful computations towards an immediate approximate result. To this end, we effectively reverse the regular formulation of approximate computing problems. First, we apply approximate intermittent computing to human activity recognition. We design an anytime variation of support vector machines able to improve the accuracy of the classification as energy is available. We build a hw/sw prototype using kinetic energy and show a 7x improvement in system throughput compared to state-of-the-art system support for intermittent computing, while retaining 83% accuracy in a setting where the best attainable accuracy is 88%. Next, we apply approximate intermittent computing in a sharply different scenario, that is, embedded image processing, using loop perforation. Using a different hw/sw prototype we build and diverse energy traces, we show a 5x improvement in system throughput compared to state-of-the-art system support for intermittent computing, while providing an equivalent output in 84% of the cases.

  • Family CEO and board service : Turning the tide for export scope in family SMEs
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Business Review. - : Elsevier. - 0969-5931 .- 1873-6149. ; 28:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adopting the socioemotional wealth perspective, we argue that the presence of a family CEO in family SMEs negatively affects export scope, but that such negative effect is mitigated by board service. We develop and test a model that considers the synergistic combination of family management and another important aspect of family governance in the context of family firm internationalization: the service behavior of the board of directors. The empirical evidence from a sample of 248 Belgian family SMEs shows that governance is crucial to overcoming the problems of family management: family CEOs may negatively influence export scope, but board service is able to turn the tide so that the family CEO effect becomes positive. With such novel findings, we contribute to international business and family business studies.

  • Socioemotional Wealth and Tax Aggressiveness in Private Family Firms : The Role of the CEO's Characteristics
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Family Business Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0894-4865 .- 1741-6248.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building on recent works calling for more tax research in the family business context, this study draws on the distinction between restricted and extended socioemotional wealth (SEW) to analyze how both SEW dimensions affect tax aggressiveness. Based on a sample of 201 private Belgian family firms, consistent findings from multiple regression analyses indicate that restricted SEW is positively related to tax aggressiveness, whereas extended SEW exerts a negative influence on tax aggressiveness. Our results also indicate that the family status of the CEO, CEO gender and CEO tenure moderate the relationship between both SEW dimensions and tax aggressiveness.

  • Transforming entrepreneurial orientation into performance in family SMEs : Are nonfamily CEOs better than family CEOs?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of small business management (Print). - : Taylor & Francis. - 0047-2778 .- 1540-627X. ; 61:4, s. 1672-1703
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We draw on the agency and stewardship perspectives to determine whether and how the effect of family leadership on the entrepreneurial orientation-performance relationship in small and medium (SME) family firms is contingent on the main life cycle dimensions: firm size, generational stage, and board of directors’ engagement. The analyses of 284 Belgian family SMEs reveal that nonfamily leaders outperform family leaders in transforming entrepreneurial orientation into performance in larger firms, whereas family leaders outpace nonfamily leaders when the board has a strong engagement in serving the CEO.

  • Control of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) Engine Dynamics
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2004 American Control Conference, ACC : June 30 - July 2, 2004, Boston Sheraton Hotel, Boston, Massachusetts. - 0743-1619. - 0780383354 ; 5, s. 4048-4053
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustionconcept lacks direct ignition timing control, instead the autoignition depends on the operating condition. Since auto ignition of ahomogeneous mixture is very sensitive to operating conditions, a fastcombustion timing control is necessary for reliable operation. Hence, feedback is needed and the crank angle of 50% burnt (CA50) has provedto be a reliable feedback indicator of on-going combustion inpractice. CA50 or other methods for detecting on-going cylinderpressure used in the feedback control of a HCCI engine all rely onpressure sensors. This paper presents a newcandidate for control of HCCI engine by using the electronicconductive properties in the reaction zone. This phenomenon is calledion current. This paper perform combustion timing control based on ioncurrent and compare it with control based on pressure sensor. Thecombustion timing control is performed on cycle-to-cycle basis and the engine is a one-cylinder version of a heavy duty engine equipped with a port injection system using dual fuels.

  • Costs of bleeds relating to acute coronary syndrome therapies.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medical Economics. - : Informa Healthcare. - 1369-6998 .- 1941-837X. ; 13:2, s. 236-240
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To estimate the costs to manage selected types of bleeding complications in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) treated with antithrombotics, including antiplatelet, and fibrinolytic therapies: decrease in haemoglobin >3 g/dL, puncture site, and bleeding requiring transfusion of blood products. Methods: Retrospective chart reviews of ACS patients experiencing decrease in Hb, puncture site, or bleeding requiring transfusion were conducted in hospitals in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden to determine the total length of stay (LOS), stay post-bleeding, procedures to identify the extent of bleeding, number and types of transfusion products, patient demographics, reason for hospital admission and disposition upon discharge. Country-specific costs were applied to estimate the average cost per patient by type of bleeding event. Results: Records of 158 ACS patients with the bleeding complications were examined (26.9% decrease in Hb, 35.5% puncture site, and 37.8% transfusion). The average LOS was 10.6 days for decreasing Hb, 7.7 days for puncture site bleeding, and 11.3 days for patients receiving transfusions due to these bleeding events. The average costs per patient ranged between €3,986 and €10,252. The LOS ranged widely both within and across countries.Limitations: The study has a small sample size and costs are confounded by co-morbidities.Conclusions: The estimated costs for decreasing Hb, puncture site bleeding and bleeding resulting in transfusions provide a tool for researchers to conduct economic analyses of bleeding events associated with therapies for ACS.
