  • Exploring problems related to the materials planning user environment
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Economics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-5273. ; 113:1, s. 383-400
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the existence of various user-environment problems (i.e. problems related to the planningorganization, basic planning data, software support, education, and knowledge) and explains the impact of userenvironment problems on the perceived planning performance of different materials planning methods (MRP, re-order point, kanban, run-out time, and periodic review methods). It is based on a survey of 153 manufacturing and 53 distributing companies in Sweden. Four distinct clusters of user environments are identified. It is shown how different materials planning methods perform differently in various user environments.

  • Future of supply chain planning: Closing the gaps between practice and promise
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - 0960-0035. ; 46:1, s. 62-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose is to develop a research agenda for supply chain planning (SCP) relevant to practice. We critically evaluate academic literature on SCP in order to understand how problems are addressed in their particular context, what the outcomes are, and the mechanisms producing the observed outcomes. Four categories of SCP are studied: sales and operations planning (S&OP), supply chain master planning, supply chain materials management, and collaborative materials management. We introduce the concept of enabling mechanisms to identify specific innovations in materials management and production management that can facilitate the future improvement of SCP.The critical evaluation of current SCP theory presents very limited results that are of practical relevance. SCP is not presented as an intervention and the results are not in a form that is actionable for practitioners. The body of literature is almost absent in addressing problems according to context, it presents limited evidence of intended outcomes, and it fails to identify unintended outcomes. As a consequence, research is unable to bolster theoretical understandings of how outcomes – both intended and unintended – are achieved. In our forward-looking research agenda we leverage our understanding of the enabling mechanisms in order to propose research to make mature S&OP and novel types of SCP implementable. The paper is an example of a structured approach to developing a research agenda that is relevant to practice and can be used more widely in logistics and supply chain management. This paper presents a research agenda to close the gap between practice and promise in SCP.We operationalize what constitutes practical relevance for an established field of research.

  • Global sourcing strategies in transition: An outsourcing study in the apparel industry
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual NOFOMA conference 2010.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective is to explain what internally and externally related forces have driven apparel companies sourcing strategies in the past, and outline how these companies could take action in the future. A framework of driving forces for having to take outsourcing decisions is generated, and used and further developed into a conceptual model in the analysis and discussion.A theoretical framework is generated from apparel supply chain studies and general literature on outsourcing, supplier relations, manufacturing strategy. Cross-case analysis of three apparel companies with several decades of outsourcing decisions is the basis for generating the model.A theoretical framework and model of driving forces to outsourcing in the apparel industry has been generated. We distinguish between apparel industry and market related and political society external forces, and four internally driving forces. The externally driving forces can either push a company from a location or pull it to a new location. The past and potential future importance of individual forces is discussed. The study has focus on the past forces. We have identified some important dimensions that could be driving future sourcing strategies and outsourcing decision. These could be used as dimensions in scenario analysis evaluating the attractiveness of future sourcing locations. The generated framework and model could be used by managers to understand and map their external and internal driving outsourcing forces. The theoretical contributions lies in explaining the driving forces and their change processes and form a conceptual model of driving forces for outsourcing.

  • Improving performance with sophisticated master production scheduling
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Economics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-5273. ; 168, s. 118-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Literature addressing master production scheduling (MPS) typically focuses on the development of sophisticated MPS methods with the expectation that these methods will result in feasible plans and improved performance. However, empirical evidence showing that sophisticated methods are better than simpler ones remains scarce, and companies have reported difficulties with using sophisticated planning methods. In this study, we therefore investigate how sophisticated MPS methods impact three perception-based performance variables—namely, plan feasibility, inventory turnover rate, and delivery service—while accounting for the complexities of planning environments and MPS maturity. We define six MPS methods, ranging from those that ignore capacity to those exhibiting capacity-constrained planning using optimisation. An analysis of survey data from a sample of Swedish manufacturing companies reveals a significant negative effect of less sophisticated methods compared to highly sophisticated ones in terms of plan feasibility, as well as a significant negative effect of the simplest method in considering available capacity compared to highly sophisticated methods in terms of delivery service. The maturity of the MPS process most significantly impacts all performance measures, whereas planning environment complexity shows only a weak negative impact. Findings also indicate that both MPS process maturity and sophisticated MPS methods mediate the negative performance prompted by complex planning environments. Results thus suggest that sophisticated MPS may generally affect performance both directly and indirectly. Using sophisticated MPS methods reduces the negative effects of complex planning environments and results in more feasible plans irrespective of environment complexity and process maturity.

  • Inventory management practices and their implications on perceived planning performance
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0020-7543 .- 1366-588X. ; 46:7, s. 1787-1812
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on the use of material planning methods to control material flow to inventories of purchased items. The first sub-objective is to evaluate the perceived planning performance of material planning methods used to control material flows in different inventory types in manufacturing and distribution companies. The second sub-objective is to evaluate the difference in perceived planning performance depending on the way planning parameters are determined and the methods used. Five material planning methods are studied: the re-order point method, the fixed order interval method, run-out time planning, Kanban and MRP. Our analysis is based on survey data from 153 manufacturing and 53 distribution companies. Findings conclude that the use of material planning methods differs depending on where along the material flow they are applied, whether the inventory is located in manufacturing or in distribution operations and between companies of various sizes. The modes of applying a material planning method affect its perceived performance. In particular, the way of determining and the review frequency of safety stocks and lead times have great importance for the planning performance of MRP methods, while the determination and review of order points, review frequencies and run-out times were important for re-order point methods.

  • Laser hardened trimming tools : wear test and geometry evaluation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IDDRG 2008 Conference. - Olofström : Industriellt utvecklingscentrum i Olofström AB. - 9789163329487 ; , s. 639-650
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The higher product requirements (reduced weight, increased safety, lower emissions…) have meant that a larger number of car body parts must be made in advanced high strength steels. With a reduced lifecycle of a car model from 7 to 5 years this leads to a need for reducing the manufacturing cost and lead time for the tool and die design and manufacturing. The main purpose of this investigation is to establish cost- and lead-time reducing guidelines for selection of tool concepts (choice of die materials, hardening methods and geometry) for different production volume scenarios with respect to sheet materials quality (MS-UHSS) and thickness, without increased die maintenance costs. In this study the cutting edge geometry has been evaluated in respect to the cutting edge radius and the angle of the upper tool. Experimental testing together with FE simulation has been used. Results show that an angle of 93° on the upper cutting edge initially can reduce the cutting work by 14%. Results also shows that by using a cutting edge radius of 80µm, the tool “wear in phase” can be more controlled. Wear test up to 150 000 strokes have been made to evaluate different tool concepts using laser hardened cast iron, cast steel and wrought steel as die material. Sheet material tested was 220RP, DP600, DP800, 700MC and DP1000, with a thickness of t=2mm. The result leads to recommendations for industrial verification. Results among other recommendations are: laser hardened EN-JS-2070 up to 500 000 parts against 220RP and Sleipner up to 1 500 000 parts against 1000DP.
