  • Empirical studies concerning the maintenance of UML diagrams and their use in the maintenance of code: A systematic mapping study
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Information and Software Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0950-5849. ; 55:7, s. 1119-1142
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: The Unified Modelling Language (UML) has, after ten years, become established as the de facto standard for the modelling of object-oriented software systems. It is therefore relevant to investigate whether its use is important as regards the costs involved in its implantation in industry being worthwhile. Method: We have carried out a systematic mapping study to collect the empirical studies published in order to discover "What is the current existing empirical evidence with regard to the use of UML diagrams in source code maintenance and the maintenance of the UML diagrams themselves? Results: We found 38 papers, which contained 63 experiments and 3 case studies. Conclusion: Although there is common belief that the use of UML is beneficial for source code maintenance, since the quality of the modifications is greater when UML diagrams are available, only 3 papers concerning this issue have been published. Most research (60 empirical studies) concerns the maintainability and comprehensibility of the UML diagrams themselves which form part of the system's documentation, since it is assumed that they may influence source code maintainability, although this has not been empirically validated. Moreover, the generalizability of the majority of the experiments is questionable given the material, tasks and subjects used. There is thus a need for more experiments and case studies to be performed in industrial contexts, i.e., with real systems and using maintenance tasks conducted by practitioners under real conditions that truly show the utility of UML diagrams in maintaining code, and that the fact that a diagram is more comprehensible or modifiable influences the maintainability of the code itself. This utility should also be studied from the viewpoint of cost and productivity, and the consistent and simultaneous maintenance of diagrams and code must also be considered in future empirical studies. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. • A Robustness Approach to Reliability
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Quality and Reliability Engineering International. - : Wiley. - 1099-1638 .- 0748-8017. ; 29:1, s. 17-32
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reliability of products is here regarded with respect to failure avoidance rather than probability of failure. To avoid failures,we emphasize variation and suggest some powerful tools for handling failures due to variation. Thus, instead of technicalcalculation of probabilities from data that usually are too weak for correct results, we emphasize the statistical thinking thatputs the designers focus on the critical product functions.Making the design insensitive to unavoidable variation is called robust design and is handled by (i) identification andclassification of variation, (ii) design of experiments to find robust solutions, and (iii) statistically based estimations of propersafety margins.Extensions of the classical failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) are presented. The first extension consists of identifyingfailure modes caused by variation in the traditional bottom–up FMEA analysis. The second variation mode and effect analysis(VMEA) is a top–down analysis, taking the product characteristics as a starting point and analyzing how sensitive thesecharacteristics are to variation. In cases when there is sufficient detailed information of potential failure causes, the VMEA can be applied in its mostadvanced mode, the probabilistic VMEA. Variation is then measured as statistical standard deviations, and sensitivities aremeasured as partial derivatives. This method gives the opportunity to dimension tolerances and safety margins to avoidfailures caused by both unavoidable variation and lack of knowledge regarding failure processes.

  • Chemical Analysis of Single Cells
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Analytical Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0003-2700 .- 1520-6882. ; 85:2, s. 522-542
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this Review, we provide an overview of methods developed for chemical analysis of single cells over the last two years. Many biological systems contain an ensemble of cells with heterogeneous chemistry; therefore, it is important to analyze them on an individual basis in order to elucidate the role each cell plays in the function of these systems. In clinical diagnostics, the development of extremely sensitive measurements, down to single cells, may provide the best ability for diagnoses. Single cell analysis has, in fact, been present for quite some time. Investigators in life sciences consider the cell as the unit of life and so the pursuit to quantify, image, and modulate the cell has been ongoing for decades.

  • The cancer genome atlas pan-cancer analysis project
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 45:10, s. 1113-1120
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Research Network has profiled and analyzed large numbers of human tumors to discover molecular aberrations at the DNA, RNA, protein and epigenetic levels. The resulting rich data provide a major opportunity to develop an integrated picture of commonalities, differences and emergent themes across tumor lineages. The Pan-Cancer initiative compares the first 12 tumor types profiled by TCGA. Analysis of the molecular aberrations and their functional roles across tumor types will teach us how to extend therapies effective in one cancer type to others with a similar genomic profile. © 2013 Nature America, Inc.
