  • Invariant mass spectrum and alpha-n correlation function studied in the fragmentation of He-6 on a carbon target
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 633:2, s. 234-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Momentum distributions and invariant mass spectra from the breakup of He-6 ions with an energy of 240 MeV/u interacting with a carbon target have been studied. The data were used to extract information about the reaction mechanism which is influenced by the structure of He-6. It is found that the dominant reaction mechanism is a two-step process: knock out of one neutron followed by the decay of the He-5 resonance. The shape of the (alpha+n) two-body invariant mass spectrum is interpreted as mainly reflecting the 5He ground state which is a J(pi) = 3/2(-) resonance. However, no evidence for correlations between cu particles and neutrons is observed in the momentum widths of the distributions. It is demonstrated that a combined analysis of the two-body invariant mass spectrum and an appropriate correlation function may be used to determine the properties of the intermediate resonance. • Learning Arabic Vocabulary : The Effectiveness of Teaching Vocabulary and Vocabulary Learning Strategies
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Higher Education Theory and Practice. - : North American Business Press. - 2158-3595. ; 20:10, s. 190-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper intends to contribute to the research field of vocabulary learning from an Arabic language acquisition perspective. After a brief introduction, the paper deals first with some linguistic, Arabic-specific considerations within the vocabulary teaching theoretical framework and then presents a research project, the scope of which is the monitoring of students’ vocabulary proficiency in two subsequent terms, where vocabulary instruction differed in focus on teaching methods. Specifically, the paper outlines the frequency ranges of the words taught during the course, accounts for the methods chosen to measure the students’ vocabulary proficiency and compares and discusses the results.

  • A polyconvex framework for soft biological tissues. Adjustment to experimental data
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Solids and Structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0020-7683 .- 1879-2146. ; 43:20, s. 6052-6070
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main goal of this contribution is to provide a simple method for constructing transversely isotropic polyconvex functions suitable for the description of biological soft tissues. The advantage of our approach is that only a few parameters are necessary to approximate a variety of stress-strain curves and to satisfy the condition of a stress-free reference configuration a priori in the framework of polyconvexity. The proposed polyconvex stored energies are embedded into the concept of structural tensors and the representation theorems for isotropic tensor functions are utilized. As an example, the medial layer of a human abdominal aorta is investigated, modeled by some of the proposed polyconvex functions and compared with experimental data. Hereby, the economic fitting to experimental data, and hence the easy handling of the functions is shown.

  • Production and In-Plane Compression Mechanics of Alternatively Angled Layered Cross-Laminated Timber
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BioResources. - : University of North Carolina Press. - 1930-2126 .- 1930-2126. ; 13:2, s. 4029-4045
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasing awareness of sustainable building materials has led to interest in enhancing the structural performance of engineered wood products. This paper reports mechanical properties of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels constructed with layers angled in an alternative configuration on a modified industrial CLT production line. Timber lamellae were adhesively bonded together in a single-step press procedure to form CLT panels. Transverse layers were laid at an angle of 45°, instead of the conventional 90° angle with respect to the longitudinal layers’ 0° angle. Tests were carried out on 20 five-layered CLT panels divided into two matched groups with either a 45° or a 90° configuration; an in-plane uniaxial compressive loading was applied in the principal orientation of the panels. These tests showed that the 45°-configured panels had a 30% higher compression stiffness and a 15% higher compression strength than the 90° configuration. The results also revealed that the 45°-configured CLT can be industrially produced without using more material than is required for conventional CLT 90° panels. In addition, the design possibility that the 45°-configured CLT can carry a given load while using less material also suggests that it is possible to use CLT in a wider range of structural applications.

  • Endothelial function in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome : a long-term follow-up study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Fertility and Sterility. - : Elsevier BV. - 0015-0282 .- 1556-5653. ; 94:7, s. 2654-2658
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To investigate pulse wave reflection and endothelial-dependent vasodilatation (EDV) in PCOS patients and age-matched healthy controls. Design: Long-term follow-up study. Setting: Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, Uppsala University, Sweden. Patient(s): Sixty-seven PCOS patients with a mean age of 43.3 years at the follow-up investigation and 66 age-matched controls. Intervention: Aplanation tonometry before and after b-2 receptor agonist (terbutaline) challenge. Main outcome measure(s): Baseline augmentation index (AI) aorta, baseline AI-radial, and change in AI-radial following terbutaline administration as a measure of EDV. Result(s):  There was no difference in baseline AI-aorta between PCOS patients and control subjects. Change in AI-radial following terbutaline administration was less pronounced in PCOS patients in comparison to control subjects. This difference remained when adjusted for use of combined oral contraceptives/hormone replacement therapy and postmenopausal status but not after adjustment for BMI. Conclusion(s): Middle-aged PCOS patients display signs of endothelial dysfunction in comparison to age-matched controls, but this is largely due to the increased prevalence of independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease found in this group.
