  • A determination of the centre-of-mass energy at LEP2 using radiative two-fermion events
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 46:2, s. 295-305
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)(gamma) and e(+)e(-) -> q (q) over bar(gamma) events radiative to the Z pole, DELPHI has determined the centre-of-mass energy, root s, using energy and momentum constraint methods. The results are expressed as deviations from the nominal LEP centre-of-mass energy, measured using other techniques. The results are found to be compatible with the LEP Energy Working Group estimates for a combination of the 1997 to 2000 data sets.

  • Determination of the b quark mass at the M-Z scale with the DELPHI detector at LEP
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 46:3, s. 569-583
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An experimental study of the normalized three-jet rate of b quark events with respect to light quarks events (light = l equivalent to u, d, s) has been performed using the CAMBRIDGE and DURHAM jet algorithms. The data used were collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP on the Z peak from 1994 to 2000. The results are found to agree with theoretical predictions treating mass corrections at next-to-leading order. Measurements of the b quark mass have also been performed for both the b pole mass: M-b and the b running mass: m(b)(M-Z). Data are found to be better described when using the running mass. The measurement yields: m(b)(M-Z) = 2.85 +/- 0.18(stat) +/- 0.13(exp) +/- 0.19(had) +/- 0.12(theo) GeV/c(2). for the CAMBRIDGE algorithm. This result is the most precise measurement of the b mass derived from a high energy process. When compared to other b mass determinations by experiments at lower energy scales, this value agrees with the prediction of quantum chromodynamics for the energy evolution of the running mass. The mass measurement is equivalent to a test of the flavour independence of the strong coupling constant with an accuracy of 7 parts per thousand.

  • Masses, lifetimes and production rates of Xi(-) and Xi(+) at LEP 1
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 639:3-4, s. 179-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measurements of the Xi(-) and (Xi) over bar (+) masses, mass differences, lifetimes and lifetime differences are presented. The (Xi) over bar (+) sample used is much larger than those used previously for such measurements. In addition, the S production rates in Z -> b (b) over bar and Z -> q (q) over bar events are compared and the position xi* of the maximum of the distribution in Z -> q (q) over bar events is measured.

  • Measurement and interpretation of fermion-pair production at LEP energies above the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 45:3, s. 589-632
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents DELPHI measurements and interpretations of cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries, and angular distributions, for the e(+)e(-) -> f (f) over bar process for centre-of-mass energies above the Z resonance, from root s similar to 130-207 GeV at the LEP collider. The measurements are consistent with the predictions of the Standard Model and are used to study a variety of models including the S-Matrix ansatz for e(+)e(-) -> f (f) over bar scattering and several models which include physics beyond the Standard Model: the exchange of Z' bosons, contact interactions between fermions, the exchange of gravitons in large extra dimensions and the exchange of (v) over tilde in R-parity violating supersymmetry.

  • Search for excited leptons in e(+)e(-) collisions at root s=189-209 GeV
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 46:2, s. 277-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for excited lepton production in e(+)e(-) collisions was performed using the data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 GeV to 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 600 pb(-1). No evidence for excited lepton production was found. In searches for pair-produced excited leptons, lower mass limits were established in the range 94-103 GeV/c(2), depending on the channel and model assumptions. In searches for singly-produced excited leptons, upper limits on the parameter f/Lambda were established as a function of the mass.

  • Study of double-tagged gamma gamma events at LEPII
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 46:3, s. 559-568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Double-tagged interactions of photons with virtualities Q(2) between 10 GeV2 and 200 GeV2 are studied with the data collected by DELPHI at LEPII from 1998 to 2000, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 550 pb(-1). The gamma*gamma* -> mu(+)mu(-) data agree with QED predictions. The cross-section of the reaction gamma*gamma* -> hadrons is measured and compared to the LO and NLO BFKL calculations.

  • Fatal colonic ischaemia : A population-based study
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5521 .- 1502-7708. ; 41:11, s. 1312-1319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives. To estimate the incidence of fatal colonic ischaemia (CI) and the cause-specific mortality of CI, and to describe the localization and extension of colonic infarction and quantify the risk factors associated with CI. Material and methods. Between 1970 and 1982 the autopsy rate in Malmo, Sweden, was 87%, creating the possibilities for a population-based study. Out of 23,446 clinical autopsies, 997 cases were coded for intestinal ischaemia in a database. In addition, 7569 forensic autopsy protocols were analysed. In a case-control study nested in the clinical autopsy cohort, four CI-free controls, matched for gender, age at death and year of death, were identified for each fatal CI case in order to evaluate the risk factors. Results. The cause-specific mortality ratio was 1.7/1000 autopsies. The overall incidence of autopsy-verified fatal CI was 1.7/100,000 person years, increasing with age up to 23/100,000 person years in octogenarians. Fatal cardiac failure (odds ratio (OR) 5.2), fatal valvular disease (OR 4.3), previous stroke (OR 2.5) and recent surgery (OR 3.4) were risk factors for fatal CI. Narrowing/occlusion of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) at the aortic origin was present in 68% of the patients. The most common segments affected by transmural infarctions were the sigmoid (83%) and the descending (77%) colon. Conclusions. Heart failure, atherosclerotic occlusion/stenoses of the IMA and recent surgery were the main risk factors causing colonic hypoperfusion and infarction. Segments of transmural infarctions were observed within the left colon in 94% of the patients. Awareness of the diagnosis and its associated cardiac comorbidities might help to improve survival.

  • Increasing incidence of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm : a population-based study
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vascular Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 0741-5214 .- 1097-6809. ; 44:2, s. 237-243
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The aim of the present population-based study was to assess the trends of age- and gender-specific incidence of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA). Methods. Patients with rAAA from the city of Malmo, Sweden, were studied between 2000 and 2004. An analysis of trends of incidence and mortality of rAAA in Malmo was possible because of a previous population-based study on patients with rAAA between 1971 and 1986 (autopsy rate 85% compared with 25% for the time period 2000 to 2004). The in-hospital registry of Malmo University Hospital and the databases at the Department of Pathology, Malmo, and the Institution of Forensic Medicine, Lund, identified patients with rAAA, and the in-hospital registry identified all elective repairs for AAA. Results. Compared with the time period 1971 to 1986, the overall incidence of rAAA significantly increased from 5.6 (95 % confidence interval [CI], 4.9 to 6.3) to 10.6 (95% CI, 8.9 to 12.4) per 100,000 person-years (standardized mortality ratio, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.0 to 2.1). In men aged 60 to 69 and 70 to 79 years, the incidence increased significantly from 16 (95% CI, 11 to 21) and 56 (95% Cl, 43 to 69) to 46 (95% Cl, 28 to 63) and 117 (95% CI, 84 to 149) per 100,000 person-years, respectively, whereas no increase in the age-specific incidence in women could be demonstrated. The overall incidence of elective repair of AAA increased significantly from 3.4 (95% CI, 2.8 to 4.0) to 7.0 (95% CI, 5.6 to 8.4) per 100,000 person-years and increased most significantly from 12 (95% CI, 3.4 to 32) to 68 (95% CI, 34 to 102) per 100,000 person-years in men aged 80 to 89 years and from 5.1 (95% CI, 2.4 to 9.3) to 28 (95% CI, 15 to 41) per 100,000 person-years in women aged 70 to 79 years. The elective-acute repair ratio in women increased from 2.4 to 5.6 and decreased in men from 2.1 to 1.0. Conclusions: Between 1971 to 1986 and 2000 to 2004, the incidence of rAAA increased significantly, despite a 100% increase in elective repairs and notwithstanding a potential for bias towards underestimation due to lower autopsy rates in recent years. The reason behind this increase is unclear, and further studies are needed to identify risk groups for direction of effective prevention and screening.

  • Malacoplakia and spermatic granuloma complicating vasectomy
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Upsala Journal of Medical Sciences. - 0300-9734 .- 2000-1967. ; 111:2, s. 227-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Malacoplakia is a granulomatous disease with a histiocytic infiltrate containing calcified structures called Michaelis-Gutmann bodies. These structures are considered to represent an abnormal response to infection involving defective lysosomes and abnormal microbubular assembly. The disease most frequently involves urinary and genital tracts, but has also been described from most other organs. Here we present the first case of malacoplakia only involving the vas deferens.
